ELBGTRIG AROLAMP.
(No ModeL) No. 280,763. 'Patented July 3, 1883.
INVENTOR! WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFEICEL;
FRANZ RABL, or CAMDEN, NEw JERSEY, ASSIGNOR To THE ATL NTIC AND PACIFIC ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF sAME PLACE.
ELECTRlC-ARC LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110,280,763, dated July 3, 1883.
7 Application filed January 12, 1883. (N0 model.) 7 I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANZ RABL, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and a resident of Camden, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Electric Arc Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain improvements in the devices for feeding and regulating the movable carbons of electric-arc lamps, as more fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of sufficient of an electric lamp to illustrate my improvements; Fig. 2, a sectional plan on the line 1 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a sectional plan on the line 3 4, and Fig. 4 a view of a portion of the lamp.
My invention consists more particularly of an improved combination of devices for im parting a positive feed to the carbon-holder, and these devices may be combined with areforming mechanism of any suitable construction; but in the accompanying drawings I have shown an arrangement of arc-forming devices 011 the principle shown in the Letters Patent granted to H. OSample and myself October 11, 1881, No. 248,111.
A and A are the rods or side bars of the lower portion of the frame of the lamp, in which is mounted the fixed or negative carbon N. To the upper ends of these bars are secured the plate B and its arched frame B, on which the regulating devices are mounted, the said plateB and its parts being insulated from the lower portion of the frame. The side bar A carries at its upper end an insulated binding-post, a, while the bar A has a similar post, a, in metallic Contact therewith.
Through the center of the arched frame B and of the plate B passes the movable rod 0, Carrying the positive carbon P, and to the upper end of this rod 0 is secured a piston, D, adapted to the interior of a tube, E, carried by the frame B.
To the under side of the arched frame B is centrally secured an electro-magnet, M, wound with coarse wire in the main circuit, and to the upper side of theplate B is secured another electro-magnet, M, wound with fine wire for the shunt-circuit. These two electro-magnets are in line with each other, and have hol- .low cores, through which the carbon-holder G can pass freely. Between the adj oining-polcs of these two electro-magnets are arranged two armatures, F and F, whose pivots are adapted. 5 5
to horizontal'slots in lugs f f, carried by either of the electro-magnets. The inner ends of these armatures are beveled, Fig. 1, and rounded, Fig. 2, to partially fit around the carbon-rod O. by means of spiralsprings f f. Non-magnetic plugs m m and m m prevent the ends of the armatures from coming into Contact with and sticking to the pole of either magnet.
The carbon-holder C is in the form of a tube, on the inner face of which is cut a series of ratchet-teeth or screw-threads, as shown in Fig. 1., the upper end of the tube being open. Within this tube is a rod, J, having springfingers at its lower end, adapted to engage with the ratchetteeth in the tube, the rod being seited longitudinal movement of the core H with- 7 5 in thecoil G. The main circuit, entering, at the binding-post a, passes through the conductor 1, coil of electro-magnet M, and conductor 2, to the carbon-holder O, thence to positive carbon P, negative N, lower-carbon holder, side bar A, and out at binding-post a. A shunt-circuit passes from the post a, through conductor 3, coil of electro-magnct M, and conductor 4, to the binding-post a. One terminal of the coil G, which may have a resistance equal to .or slightly greater than that of the coil of the clectro-magnet M, is connected to the tube E, or some portion of the frame in the main circuit, while the other terminal is connected by the conductor 5 to the bindingpost a. When the lamp is first put in circuit, the current, passing through the coilof the electro-magnet M, causes the latter to attract and raise the inner ends of the armatures F F, which, acting as pawls onthe rod 0, raise the latter and form the are. As
the carbons are consumed, the increase of current in the shunt-circuits will first cause the attraction of the electro-magnet M for the armatures to overcome the attraction of the electro-magnet M, and so cause the inner ends of the pawls F F to drop, and the increase of current in the shunt-coil G will then cause the descent of the core H, and the consequent pushing downward of the holder 0 by the prongs of the rod J. On the immediate decrease of current in this shuntcircuit, the spring It will return the core H and with it the forked rod J to their normal positions shown in Fig. 1. In order to release the fingers or prongs of the rod J from the ratchet-teeth, to raise the holder 0 by the hand to insert a new carbon, I arrange over this rod a tube, K, having its lower end immediately over the prongs, and its upper end provided with ahandle, k, adapted to a bayonet joint in the tube E, so that by U turning this handle in the bayonetjoint the tube K may be pushed down overthe prongs of the rod J to release them from the teeth on the interior of the tube 0.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in an electric lamp, of a movable carbon-holder provided with ratchetteeth, and devices, substantially as described, for separating the carbons to form the arc, with H, carrying a rod, J, within the tube, and having prongs adapted to engage with said ratchet-teeth, all substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the carbon-holdii'lg tube having ratchet-teeth on its inner face, 35 with a push-rod, J, within the same, having spring fingers or prongs adapted to engage with said teeth, and a releasing-tube, K, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name; 40
to this specification in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
