Description
' A. M. GEORGE.
Mower.
Patented May 1, 1860.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. M. GEORGE, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROV EMENT IN MOWlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 28.072, dated May 1, 1860.
To all whom itmety concern:
Be it known that I, AMMI M. GEORGE, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Mowing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of mechanism, substantially as hereinafter described, for throwing the cutters in and outof gear.
Figure l is a perspective view of the machine, and Fig. 2 a top view of the same. D represents the frame of the carriage, and A the propelling-wheel of the machine. Fig. 3 is a top sectional plan of the machine. Fig. 4 is an end vertical section, and Fig. 5 a side section of the same; and Fig. 6, a side section of the propelling-wheel and connection of the gearing represented by letters 0 and E.
B represents a cylinder, and letters y y a zigzag groove formed therein to give motion to thecutter-plate and knives attached thereto.
Letters W W and o 0 represent a compound slide with two movements, the one at right angle with the other. That part represented by W moves up and down in the guides XX, and the part represented by 0 0 moves transversely on the horizontal part of the slide W.
Letter T is the guide-pin, made fast to the slide 0 0, at the opposite end of which, extending downward, is the joint or hinge Z of the connecting-rod u and cutter-plate m.
L represents the cutter-bar, and M the cutter-plate.
S represents a rolling joint to admit of raising or lowering the cutter-plate to any point required at pleasure of the operator.
Q is afriction-wheel, which supports the cutter-plate in connection with that side of the machine, and .P the supportingguard of said friction-wheel.
Letter R represents a protect-ingguard to cylinder B when in operation.
1 is the draft or horse-shalts; F and n, the steps and foot board for convenience of the operator.
G is the shipping-lever, for giving motion tothe cutters and stopping their operation.
H is a hook to hold said lever in gear while in operation, and J is a spring to hold the same out of gear when the operation ceases.
K is the stirrnplever, connected with the slide W at V1 Vi, and the fulcrum VII VII.
When the machine is drawn forward the cylinder revolves by means of the gearing C and E. The shipping-lever G being pressed downward, it acts on the stirrup-lever K, and thence on the slide WV, raising it so as to insert the guide-pin T into the zigzag groove 3 y in cyl-. inder B, which, when revolving, produces the tranverse motion of the cutter-plate m, and consequently the action of the cuttersto the mowing grass or grain, as required.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the compound slide V and 0 with the guides X X, the stirrup and shipping levers K and G, spring J, and hook or stop H, arranged for operation in the manner and for the purpose specified.
April 6, 1860.
A. M. GEORGE.
