(Cl. 51193) The present invention relates to a felt roller for the processing and finishing of bright sheet steel and comprises p-articularly a cylindrical roller for use i-n steel mills, tfor treating and finishing bright sheet steelplates of every grade.
The present roller has several applications, as for grease protection of the finished plate, for pinchers for unrolling the coiled sheet, or for pushing the sections of the plate through the machine, as a polisher for cleaning the plate intended for galvanizing or tinning, with or without `abrasive, -and :as a wringer for drying off afterthe acid baths.
It has been proposed before to perform these different operations by rollers composed of felt or cotton discs packed tightly along an axle which was mounted directly on the machine, a procedure found most unsatisfactory, because of the irregularity of compactness, pressure and surface of the discs.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide -a roller comprising a steel tube having thick steel flanged members applied to each end and in the center of which flanged members has been cut an opening corresponding to the shape and size of the machine axle or shaft upon which it is to be mounted, and a second flange or shoulder being :secured at each end of the tube to maintain secured thereon the texture forming the working surface of the roller, the texture being a continuous band of felt, cotton or Wool, Wound on end in `endless form and under constant pressure, arotmd the tube, the outer coating being held firmly against the surface of the tube by means of glue or by la string or Wire Wound together with the texture.
With this and other objects in view which will be apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l represents the roller partly in elevation, completely garnished, and partly a sectional view of the texture and a longitudinal section of the tube;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section of the finished roller;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on a larger scale, the texture being held down firmly at its base to the tube by means of string or Wire; and
Fig. 4 is la cross-section of the roller showing the texture held finnly to the tube by gluing.
Referring now to the drawin and in particular to Fig. 1, a roller axle 1 of -square section with cylindrical extremities permits the axle to run in bearings (not shown). The square section of the shaft which can be housed firm in the roller by 'a threaded lnut or any other suitable means, slides into the end flanges 2 of the roller.
The tube 3 is sufficiently strong to assure rigidity when the roller is subjected to heavy pressure. The finished surface of the felt can be cylindrical or of convex form to ensure even press-ure in the event of flexibility of a long tube.
A flange 2 overlapping the `diameter of the tube 3 is attached at each extremity in order to limit the texture on the tube 3. It can form part of the main flange which carries the shaft or be secured separately to the outside edge of the tube 3.
The working surface of the roller is composed of a 2,807,124 Patented Sept. 24, 1957 ice band of texture wound edgeways around the perimeter of the tube and in a continuous spiral form, under constant pressure.
As shown in Fig. 4 the band of texture 5 can be assembled or glued to the surface of the tube 3 by means of an adhesive 6 or, as shown in Fig. 3, can be folded in double with a stron-g string or wire 8 embedded in the bottom of the fold 7, which when wound together around the tube maintains the texture firmly against the steel tube 3.
Once the texture has been wound completely over the whole surface of steel the exterior surface of the felt is then rectified cylindrically to obtain an appropriate finished diameter and regular smooth Working surface.
The felt roller constructed in accordance with the present invent-ion offers the following advantages:
Its durability is lfar superior compared with the stamped disc type. Regular and positive pressure throughout the rollers length is brought about. Also, constant efficiency with superior Working results. Furthermore, even wear of the yWorking surface, because of the even pressure, is experienced. Also, no slipping and no overriding on the plate takes place land the plate moves at top speed. No slipping around the axle, as do the discs, is possible and no oil-drip on the finished plates occurs, because of the efficient and even contact of the roller over the whole plate surface. Also, experience disclosed that no hardening of the dry working rollers is found. The present arrangement brings about minimum Waste of texture in cutting the straight bands, unlike the cutting of discs. Further, greater facility and `speed for installing and changing the rollers on the machine is made possible and possibility of -a perfect finish to fine limits of the Working surface of the roller and to the cylindrical or convex form desired is provided. The present device also permits reuse of the steel tubes for regarnishing when the texture is Worn, and finally the device is economical because the texture represents only a fraction of the total diameter of the roller.
The form, details, shape, materials used land different dispositions employed can vary in the manufacture of these rollers while still remaining Within the boundaries and limits of this invention.
While I have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment `is given by example only and not in a limited sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects `and the claim.
I claim:
A felt roller for the processing and finishing of bright sheet material comprising a steel tube having flanged members extending snugly into the ends of said tub'e and With the flanges extending beyond the periphery of said tube, an axle extending through and being centered by said flanged members, a medially Ifolded band of textile secured to and Wound on edge helicoidallly around said steel tube under constant radial :and axial pressure and extending substantially radially from said steel tube, :and a wire embedded in the fold of said band and Wound around said steel tube with said band to maintain the latter close to the tube.
