UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
SWAN PETERSON, or KNOXVILLE, rumors.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,664, dated July 3, 1883. Application filed March 15, 188 8. (N0 model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SWAN PETERSON, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved gate closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same opened, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one end of the gate and the posts.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to farm-gates; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a gate, partly sliding and partly swinging, which may be opened at both ends, and which may swing to both sides, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,,the letters A B A B indicate four upright posts, between which the gate C is hung, the posts B, stand ing obliquely to the posts A, allowing the gate to slide and swing between each pair of uprights in an angle of ninety degrees.
The gate consists of a number of horizontal rails, D, fastened to two pairs of uprights, E E, each pair fastened at about one-third the length of the gate fromthe ends of the same, and the three upper rails fastened at their ends to two short bars, F. The ends of the middle rail of the gate rest upon two sector-shaped blocks, G, which are fastened I, are journaled between the two pairs of uprights, below the ends of the rail next below the middle rail, and the lower edges, J, of the ends of the said rail are slightl y inclined upward and outwardly, so that they will not rest upon the rollers when the gate is closed; but when the gate is slid to one side in open ing it, the lower edge of that end will gradually bearnpon the roller, raising the gate and allowing it to he slid upon the same. Two arms, K, are pivoted upon stakes L, driven into the ground, one at each end and at op be opened to both sides and at both ends, the
end to be opened being raised slightly, so as to disengage one of the catches H, whereupon the gate is pushed a short distance to one side, allowing the catch upon the swinging upright to engage under the rail, outside the uprights E, when the gate maybe swung open, aportion of the weight resting upon the roller and a portion of it upon the swinging upright. When the gate is closed, the swinging uprights are swung to the sides, leaving the roadway clear; andwhen it is desired to open the gate, the upright upon the side to which it is desired to swing the gate is brought in toward the gate and hooked under the rail with, its catch. It will also be seen that the gate may be removed entirely when it is desired to do so, in winter, when the snow would interfere with the working of the gate, in a moment of time, and likewise inserted in a moment, there being no hinges or other parts to be fitted together.
A part of or the entire upper rail may be provided with barbs or points, as shown at I in the drawings, preventing animals from puslv ing the gate open.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination of the gate 0, upright posts A 13, having blocks G and rollers I, and
swinging; uprights M, having catches O, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
' In tesi'imonyt-hat I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aifixed. my signature in 2. The herein-described gate, consisting of presence of two witnesses.
posts A B, blocks (F1r,ro]1ers I, rails ]'),up1:ightw 5 posts E, bars 1?, stokes L, arms K, uprights M, and catches 0, all eonstrnetefl, combined, and arranged 11R and for the purpose shown and set forth.
S'WUXN PEIERSON.
