ADOLPH ALBIES, OF ATOH'ISON, KANSAS.
CQMBIINED HARROW AND S'TALK-CU'T'TER.
SPEGIFICA'IIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 280,551, dated July 3, 1883,
Application filed January 15, 1883. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH ALBins, of Atchison, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others-skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved harrow. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the front part of the harrow, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the teeth removed from the harrow-frame.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to combined harrows and stalk-cutters; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of an implement of that class, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters B B denote the side bars of the harrow-frame,
which are connected at their front end by two parallel cross-bars, F F.
O O are the journal-boxes for the shaft D of the rotary stalk c'utter, which is constructed as follows: Three or more collars, I, each made with four radial arms, J, set at right angles to one another, are shrunk or otherwise fastened upon shaft D (see Fig. 3) in such a manner that the arms of the several collars will be in a plane with one another. The outer ends of the several arms are then connected by the cutter-blades K, fastened to the arms by bolts L, thus forming a four-bladed stalk-cutter adapted to revolve in its boxes 0 within the frame formed by the side pieces, B B, and cross-bars F F. V
The sides B B of the harrow-frame, back of cross-bars F, are connected by parallel cross bars G and H, which form bearings or sup ports for the intermediate tooth-bars, A, through which, as well as through the side bars, B B, the harrow-teeth M are inserted.
The latter are of the usual spike shape, straight and tapering, with four corners or cuttingedges, one of which is presented to the line of draft, the teeth being set in an inclined or slanting position through their respective tooth-bars, with the point pointing in the direction of the draft. The four sides or faces of each tooth are grooved or recessed longitudinally, as shown at m in Fig. 4, to adapt them to receive a removable key or wedge, N. By this construction of the teeth the holes in the tooth-bars through which the teeth are inserted may be made the exact shape and size of the teeth in cross-section, so as to prevent any possibility of displacement, and when one of the cutting edges of the teeth becomes dulled or worn they may readily be removed and their position changed, .so as to present a fresh cutting-edge, by removing and again reinserting the keys N.
The stalk-cutter may, if desired, be detached from the harrow-frame by unhinging or unscrewing the tops of the journal-boxes G, if it is desired to use the implement as an ordinary drag, in which case the draft may be attached to the chain 1?, the inner end of which has a large link, Q, sliding upon the inner cross-bar, F, when it is desired to give to the harrow a more or less oblique direction, whereas when it is desired to harrow or pulverize the soil between rows the draft should be applied to the middle front hook, B, to give the harrow a straight direction. hen the stalk-cutter is used, the draft should be applied to the side hooks, O 0, back of the inner cross-bar, F, so as to give a down draft or pitch to the front part of the frame, which carries the rotary stalk-cutter, for the purpose of bringing it properly into action and increasing its efficiency.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, in a drag and stalk-cutter, of the frame B B F F, having journal-boxes O O and parallel cross-bars G H, the tooth bars A, the teeth M, and the removable rotary stalk-cutter arranged between the bars F F, as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH ALBIES.
