J. LOGAN. CARRIAGE CURTAIN FASTENING.
No. 280,383. Patented July 3, 1883.
N. PETERS. Flmm'LvlhograpMv, wnhin um D. c
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES LOGAN, OF ROOHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ARTHUR O. MAYO, OF SAME PLACE.
CARRIAGE-CURTAIN FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,383, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed January 24, 1383.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES LOGAN, of Rochester, New York, have invented an Improved Carriage-Curtain Fastening, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings.
My invention relates to an improved carriage-curtain fastening; and it consists in the.
combination and arrangement of a plate and revolving button, and a hinged slotted strap so constructed as to secure the slotted edge of the curtain between the plate and the strap, all as hereinafter more fully pointed out and specified.
My improved carriage-curtain fastening is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear view of a carriagetop having my improved fastening attached thereto. Fig. 2 represents my improved carriage-curtain fastening. Fig. 3 is a section on the line m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents the plate and revolving button. Fig. 5 represents the slotted plate. Fig. 6 is a side view of the revolving button.
My improved carriage-curtain fastening con sists of a plate, D, having a movable strap, 0. hinged thereto, and a revolving button, a, at
tached to plate and arranged to secure the carriage-curtain A between the plate and the strap. The plate D is secured to the covering B by rivets, and it is provided near its outer end with two slots, d d, Fig. 4, the narrow bar 6 between which forms a hinge or pivot to which the end of the strap 0 is attached, so that it may swing freely by being bent around the bars; The revolving button is secured to the plate D near its inner end by having its shank riveted thereto, so that it turns freely. A longitudinal slot, b, is cut or punched through the strap 0 in such position that the button, when turned lengthwise, as represented by the dotted lines a, Fig. 3, will pass through it. When the button-is turned so as toextend across the length of the strap, as shown in full lines in the figures, the strap will be held against the curtain A by the shoulders of the button. The curtain A is provided with the (No modeLi slots 0'0 0, though any one of which the button may be pressed. These slots extend'in a direction at right angles with the length of the fastener, and any desired number of these may be used in order to permit the shrinking of the curtain. The positions occupied by the curtain when the button passes through the different slots are represented by the dotted lines A A, Fig. 2. One or both sides of the curtain A may be protected by the slotted plate E, attached thereto in any convenient manner.
The fastening by my improvement is readily effected by giving the button a quarter-turn after the slot 0 has been passed over the button, and then another quarter-turn after the strap has been brought down to the curtain from O to C, Fig. 3.
The strap 0 may be pivoted to the plate D, so as to swing upward and downward in a plane parallel with the curtain, the elasticity of the strap permitting its passage over the button.
My improved carriagecurtain fastening p ossesses this advantage over the old-fashioned buckle-fastening,in that the strap of the other usually gave out after a little use, and was frequently broken or pulled away from the back.
stay. My improved fastening is also cheap in the construction, as the main parts may be all struck with a die, and it is more convenient and more durable in use than any other fastening which has been heretofore employed.
I claim 1. The combination of the plate D, button a, hinged strap 0, provided with longitudinal slot b, with a carriagecurtain, A, having one or more transverse slots, 0, substantially as andffor the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the plate D, button a, hinged strap 0, having slot b, and the slot ted plate E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JAMES LOGAN.
