Generally described, the present invention provides a handle portion 12,composed of panels carrier structure that is characterized by a medial strut member connected between the bottom wall ofthe carrier and the handle portion thereof so that the bottorn'wall is supported from the handle portion when the latter is raised above the tops of articles in the carrier for carrying, and further arranged for .collapsinglaterally to allow depression of the handle portion fromflits raised carrying position to a disposition below the article tops so that the carrier, while filled with articles may be stacked with other filled carriers.
The present invention is described further below in connection with the accompanying drawings in which;
WFigj-l is a perspective view of a paperboard carrier embodying. the presentinvention, with T articles arranged therein indicatedin dotted lines, andwith the handle portion: illustrated inthe position 'it v'vciuld assume for carrying;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the carrier illustrated in Fig. 1 with the handle portion shown in the depressed position, and with the raised position indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a plan view corresponding to Fig. 2 with the intermediate partition strips broken away to show the laterally collapsed arrangement of the medial strut mem: her; v
Fig. 4 is a side view corresponding to Fig. 2 with the side wall broken away to show the strut member collapsed laterally between the articles positioned in the carrier;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank suitable for forming the carrier illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a similar plan view illustrating the first step in gluing and folding the blank of Fig. 5 to form the carrier of the present invention; and
Fig. 7 is a further plan view showing the blank of Fig. 5 completely folded and glued to complete the carrier in collapsed form ready for erection to the form illustrated in Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, and more particularly at first to Fig. 1, the carrier shown is designated generally by reference numeral 10 and comprises a Patented Aug. 13, 1957 14 and 16 foldably hinged along the top edges thereof and having'coinciding hand openings 18 and 20 formed therein. Handle panels 14 and 116 are secured together, as by glue or the like, in face-to-face relation, as best shown in Fig. 2, to form the handle portion 12;
Carrier 10 further comprisestop wall 24, each of which has spaced openings 22" and 24 in forming end and intermediate partition strips 26 and 28 foldably; extending from the lower edges of the respective handle panels 14 and 16 for positioning articles, such as beverage glasses G as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, at each side of the handle portion 12. The extending ends of these partition strips 26 and 28 are in turn foldably connected at the top edgesof opposed side wall panels 30, the lower edges of which are foldably connected by a medially foldable bottom wall 32 formed by bottom wall half laps 34 and 36. The bottom wall half laps 34 and 36 are proportioned in a width sufficiently less than the width of top wall panels 22 and 24 to incline the side wallpan'els 30 in relation to the form of the beverage glasses G, and to engage the bottoms of thehever'age glasses G at positioning slots 30 formed ad jacent the lower side wall edges. 1 o H One of the bottom wall half laps 34 has a sec'uringflap 38 foldably joined thereto by which it is arranged for securing to the other bottom wall half lap 36. This other half lap 36 is foldably connected with the previously mentioned medial strut member, which is designated by the reference numeral 40 and the securing flap 38 of the half lap 36 may be fixed in face-to-face relation at the lower portion of this strut member 40. The strut member 40 is-arranged as a medial partition extension on the bottom wallhalf lap 36 and extends therefromto reachupwardly between thepanels 14 and 16 of the panels 22 and handle portion 12 and have an upper edge portion thereof secured between these panels 14 and 16, so as to support the bottom wall 32 from the handle portion 12 when it is raised above the tops of the articles G in the carf intermediately notched as at 42 and -44 in alignment with the openings 22' and 24 that form the partition strips 26 and 28 in the top Wall panels 22 and 24, and istransversely scored at 46 for folding centrally of these notches 42 and 44, as well as being scored at 48 and 50 to fold above the bottom wall securing flap 38 and at the bottom edge of the handle portion 12. The result of this arrangement is to form strap portions 52 in the me dial strut member 40 that are laterally collapsible and that are shaped for collapsing or folding laterally beneath the intermediate partition strips 28 and between adjacent articles G in the carrier 10, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, to allow depression of the handle portion 12 readily whenever desired, while still maintaining the strut member 40 fixed between the bottom wall 32 and handle portion 12 for supporting the bottom 32 therefrom when raised for carrying.
Fig. 5 shows a form of blank suitable for forming the carrier 10 as 'described above, and together with Figs. 6 and 7 illustrates the manner in which this blank is folded and secured in forming the carrier 10. As shown in Fig. 5, the panels 14 and 16 of the handle portion 12 are arranged intermediately in the blank, with the top wall panels 22 and 24, having the openings 22' and 24 therein to form the partition strips 26 and 28, disposed at the opposite edges of the handle panels 14 and 16. The opposed side wall panels 30 are connected at the retherewith certain of said partition strips spective extending edges of the partition strips 26 and 28, and have the respective bottom wall half laps 34 and 36 connected at their opposite edges, with the securing flap 38 arranged on the half lap 34-and the medial strut member 40 onthe half lap 36. 1 7 V 1 1 The procedure of folding and securing the above noted blank 'to form the carrier 10 consistsin first applying glue or the like at a restricted area of the inner face of handle panel 16, as indicated by stippling in Fig.5, and then folding the bottom wall half lap 36 and medial strut'member-40 inwardly over the adjacent side and top wall panels 30 and 24 so as to secure the extending edge portion of the strut member 40 at the inner face of handle panel 16, as illustrated inFig. 6; and then folding the other bottom Wall half lap 34 inwardly over the adjacent side wall panel 30 and applying glue orthe like to the exposed faces of the securing flap 38 and the hansition.
dle panel 14, as indicated in Fig. 6, so that the upper portion of the blank in Fig. 6 can be folded downwardly about the top edge connection between the handle panels 14 and 16 to complete the carrier in collapsed form, as illustrated in Fig. 7, ready for erection and loading with the articles G.
The present invention has been described in detail above for purposes of illustration only and is not intended to be limited by this description or otherwise except as defined in the appended claims. a
