DA 5 ATTORNEYJ U d S tes. .Pawfl O signments,.to Atlanta Paper-Company, f0hio M Y W Application March 17, 1955, Serial No. 494,855 2 4Claim s. 01. 220- 105 by mesne asa corporation 1 This'inve'ntion'relates to paperboardcarriersof the type arranged to contain and displaya'groupof articlesand to provide for convenient carrying of the articlefgroup'; and more particularly to "an improved arrangement for, a carrierof this sort by whichthe carrier structureis greatly strengthened during carrying as well as being made readily adjustable for stacking. j' f The improved paperboard carrier, structure of the present invention isadapted especially for use in the merchan dising of beverage glasses'g'and is describedin detail further below in relation to an embodimentyarranged spe cific'ally for this purpose, andfrom which it will be seen that thec'arrier structure described may be advantageously used as well for similar handling of other articles in general, such asjars, cans, bottles, and. the like, either filled or unfilled. i
Generally described, the present invention provides a handle portion 12,composed of panels carrier structure that is characterized by a medial strut member connected between the bottom wall ofthe carrier and the handle portion thereof so that the bottorn'wall is supported from the handle portion when the latter is raised above the tops of articles in the carrier for carrying, and further arranged for .collapsinglaterally to allow depression of the handle portion fromflits raised carrying position to a disposition below the article tops so that the carrier, while filled with articles may be stacked with other filled carriers.
The present invention is described further below in connection with the accompanying drawings in which;
WFigj-l is a perspective view of a paperboard carrier embodying. the presentinvention, with T articles arranged therein indicatedin dotted lines, andwith the handle portion: illustrated inthe position 'it v'vciuld assume for carrying;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the carrier illustrated in Fig. 1 with the handle portion shown in the depressed position, and with the raised position indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a plan view corresponding to Fig. 2 with the intermediate partition strips broken away to show the laterally collapsed arrangement of the medial strut mem: her; v
Fig. 4 is a side view corresponding to Fig. 2 with the side wall broken away to show the strut member collapsed laterally between the articles positioned in the carrier;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank suitable for forming the carrier illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a similar plan view illustrating the first step in gluing and folding the blank of Fig. 5 to form the carrier of the present invention; and
Fig. 7 is a further plan view showing the blank of Fig. 5 completely folded and glued to complete the carrier in collapsed form ready for erection to the form illustrated in Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, and more particularly at first to Fig. 1, the carrier shown is designated generally by reference numeral 10 and comprises a Patented Aug. 13, 1957 14 and 16 foldably hinged along the top edges thereof and having'coinciding hand openings 18 and 20 formed therein. Handle panels 14 and 116 are secured together, as by glue or the like, in face-to-face relation, as best shown in Fig. 2, to form the handle portion 12;
Fig. 5 shows a form of blank suitable for forming the carrier 10 as 'described above, and together with Figs. 6 and 7 illustrates the manner in which this blank is folded and secured in forming the carrier 10. As shown in Fig. 5, the panels 14 and 16 of the handle portion 12 are arranged intermediately in the blank, with the top wall panels 22 and 24, having the openings 22' and 24 therein to form the partition strips 26 and 28, disposed at the opposite edges of the handle panels 14 and 16. The opposed side wall panels 30 are connected at the retherewith certain of said partition strips spective extending edges of the partition strips 26 and 28, and have the respective bottom wall half laps 34 and 36 connected at their opposite edges, with the securing flap 38 arranged on the half lap 34-and the medial strut member 40 onthe half lap 36. 1 7 V 1 1 The procedure of folding and securing the above noted blank 'to form the carrier 10 consistsin first applying glue or the like at a restricted area of the inner face of handle panel 16, as indicated by stippling in Fig.5, and then folding the bottom wall half lap 36 and medial strut'member-40 inwardly over the adjacent side and top wall panels 30 and 24 so as to secure the extending edge portion of the strut member 40 at the inner face of handle panel 16, as illustrated inFig. 6; and then folding the other bottom Wall half lap 34 inwardly over the adjacent side wall panel 30 and applying glue orthe like to the exposed faces of the securing flap 38 and the hansition.
The present invention has been described in detail above for purposes of illustration only and is not intended to be limited by this description or otherwise except as defined in the appended claims. a
