9 Claims. (Cl. 51-187) 'Ihis invention relates to grinding or abrasivev tools, and more particularly to a so-calledk sander or abrasive holder where a strip of abrasive isY held in a form to enable an eiicient use of the abrasive.
Heretofore, various devices have. beeny proposed for holding small pieces of abrasive cloth or paper to enable sandingor grinding operations to be performed thereby.
There were many disadvantages in connection with the manufacture and use of such devices. Many of the devicesdid` not adapt themselves to the use of small Ypieces of abrasivev and nearly all ofthem were wasteful of the abrasive. This last item was particularly true where the abrasive was used in the form of sheets and portions of. it were gripped to hold it in place.
By the present invention I havev provided an abrasive holder where either strips or sheet material may be used inI the same holder. Whenstripv material is used, the holder also serves as a receptacle or magazine to hold a roll of the unused material, and in use the material is merely pulled out of the magazine and over a backing surface: where it may be clampedv in place. When sheets of materialare usedonly avery small marginal portion is held by the clamping means, and the, sheet may be removed andA reversed to enable substantially all of the surface to be eciently used.
, For av better understanding of my invention, reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, which, together with this specification, more clearly set forth in detail the manner in which my invention may be carried out.

I-n its broader aspects, my invention contemplates a body formed of a sheet materialy which may be; metal, plastic or fiber. The body is provided with a mainv flat surface. 4across which the abrasive: sheet is stretched. One endA of the main tlat surface. extends upward and overthe flat surface in spaced. relationk thereto and then is bent down into contact with the top ofthe main iiat surface. The abrasive is held in place byinserting the ends between the two parts. that are in contact, the intermediate portion of the abrasive being stretched around the body. The portions that are in spaced relation to each other provide an open sided chamber in which a roll.k of abrasive may be stored. When. a roll is used,.it furmshes a continuous supply of abrasive to use until used up.
Referring now to the drawings wherein my invention is illustrated in detail, and wherein like parts are designated: by likereference characters, in Fig. 1 there is shown a holder which includes a at rectangular base portion 10. At one end the base curves upwardly at 11,A and then extends backward at 12 over the base 10 ink spaced substantially parallelA relation thereto.v
The top portion then extends downward at 14 toward the base 10, in an S curvev and terminates in a short. tlat portion or toe 15 extending for a short distance 1n parallel relation to the base. f
` abrasive particles from being pushed through the backing 2,802,313 Patented Aug. 13, 1957 At this point it may be stated'that I preferably make the tool of any kind of sheet metal, the main desideratum being that it be relatively stitf and have the necessarily inherent resiliency. It will be appreciated, however, that itl could also be formed of plastic or fiber or of a laminate of metal with plastic or fiber.
The formation of the article should be such that toe 15 is rmly and resiliently pressed against the top surface of the base 10. It will also be apparent, however, that the toe 15 could be spaced from the base `and the interveningA space be closed by a wedge. In the interest of simplicity and economy in manufacture, however, it is more desirable that the inherent resiliency and the formation of the device be such that pressure is exerted by the toe 15 against the base.
Next to the metal base and peripherally of the entire form, I preferably cement a sheet 20 of relatively soft fibrous material. This may be paper, felt or cloth.r
The abrasive 22 may have cloth, paper or any type of backing material available. It is disposed around the periphery of the holder by raising the toe* 15 and inserting an end between the toe and the top of the base, training it around the free end across the base 10 lengthwise around the end' 11, over the top 12, and then over and under the toe 15.
lt will be noted that the portion of the holder at the toe: 15 and where it meets the base is relatively smooth; therefore, the two ends of the abrasive may be pushedy home easily to maintain the same in a taut position around the holder.
In use, the upwardly extending portion provides a good lgrip for the hand, and pressure in a downward direction during use serves to morer firmly grip the ends of the abrasive to hold it in place.
It willV also be noted that at 14V in the zone where the top part curves down to meet the base, 'the abrasive is spaced: from the holder. This provides several advantages, among which are: the abrasive sheet may be pressed at this point by the lingers to increase the tension during use, or this same part (opposite 14) may be used for sanding where a light touch is desired or a curved surface is being sanded.
The flat base 10 obviously provides a liat sanding surface for sanding at articles. The curved end 11 provides a rounded surface for sanding inside curves or fillets. The zone 14 provides a curved surface for sanding outside surfaces, and the end 10 provides a relatively thin sharp surface for getting into sharp corners.
Although the fibrous material 20 is desirable, it may be omitted. When it is used, however, it provides a soft backing for the abrasive which prevents the individual support.
As will be apparent, when the base portion of the abrasiveV becomes worn ont through use, it may be released and replaced by pulling the top apart Where the base was, i. e., reversing it end for end.
The only portion wasted are the small ends which extend between the clamping toe 15 and the base. In actual' practice it has been found that this may be as small as 1/2 of material, and as will later appear, even this small amount i-s not wasted when a roll of the material is used.
It will be appreciated that the dimension of the device may be varied over that shown. Preferably in manufacture several sizes would be used and of such a width that stock widths of abrasive may be purchased to tit the same. lFor instance, it could be 1 inch wide and utilize l-inch widev rolls of sandpaper or abrasive cloth, or two and three inches wide'to accommodate any of the standard widths.
As previously stated, the space between the top and the base may be used to accommodate a quantity or reserve supply of abrasive. The manner inwhich this is effected is best shown in Fig. 2. In this figure, I have shown a modication of the invention. The basic idea and the principle involved are, however, exactly the same.
The base is again provided, having the upwardly curved part 11.` The top portion instead of being parallel longitudinally of the base, as in the previous embodiment, is only parallel transversely. The first delines a curved part 30 of relatively large radius, and may be on the same center as the end 11. It then dips down at 31 and up at 32 in the form` of asupine S and then sweeps down at 33 in much the same manner as the other device terminating in a toe 34 that is resiliently pressed against the top of the base. The manner of operation may be exactly the same as that previously described. It does, however, have features not shown in the other device. For instance, the gap between the abrasive and the top 31 provides a relatively sharp curve into which the abrasive may be pressed, when it is loosened, for sanding short outside edges or corners. The end 11 provides for sanding a large inside radius, while the part at 32 enables a sharper inside radius to be sanded.
In this embodiment I have shown a roll of abrasive 22 disposed inside the holder. The parts 11 and 30 provide a convenient shape for holding such a roll. It will be noted that the material of the roll extends out between the toe 34 and the base 10, around the end, lengthens across the bottom up around the end 11, across the hump 32 and down, over and clamped under the end 34. It could extend around in exactly the opposite direction if desired, however. As a matter of fact, if the greatest economy is desired, it would extend that way. In either event, as the abrasive is used, the end is removed from between the toe and the base, and the used portion is torn olf and discarded.
It will, therefore, be seen that I have provided an extremely simple type of holder which is very convenient to operate, both from the standpoint of use and reloading with abrasive. There are no parts to become lost. It may be easily and firmly gripped by the hand. The degree of tension on the abrasive may be adjusted, and the amount of abrasive wasted is reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described my invention, I am aware that numerous and extensive departures may be made therefor without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
l. An article of the class described including a single sheet of resilient metal formed to provide a tiat rectangular base portion a continuation of one end of said base portion curving upwardly to provide an outwardly curved surface, a continuation of said curved surface extending over the base in spaced relation thereto and extending beyond the longitudinal center of the base to provide a top portion, said top portion having a continuation ex tending downwardly into contact with the top of the base and extending along the base for a distance and termi nating spaced from the free end of the base, a roll of abrasive disposed between the top and base portion and extending out between the contacting portions and around the entire periphery of the article with the free end disposed between the contacting portions and held thereby.
2. An article of the class described including a single sheet of resilient metaloformed to provide a at rectangular base portion a continuation of one end of said base portion curving upwardly to provide an outwardly curved surface, a continuation of said curved surface extending over the base in spaced relation thereto and extending beyond the longitudinal center of the base to provide a top portion, said top portion having a continuation extending downwardly into contact with the top of the base and extending along the base for a distance and -terminating spaced from the free end of the base, and a layer of displaceable material secured to the outer surface of said article, a roll of abrasive disposed between the top and base portion and extending out between the contacting portions and around the entire periphery of the article with the free end disposed between the contacting portions and held thereby.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a single sheet of resilient metal formed to provide a flat rectangular base portion, a continuation of one end of said base portion being curved upwardly and over the base portion in spaced relation thereto to provide a top portion, said top portion extending longitudinally over the base portion to a position spaced from the `end of the base portion and then curving downwardly in an S curve to meet the base portion and terminating in a toe portion disposed along the base portion and being formed to have said toe portion resiliently pressed toward the base portion, a sheet of abrasive material having a portion extending along the underside of the base portion and around the end and over said top portion, said sheet extending between the toe part and the base and held in place by the pressure therebetween.
4. An article of manufacture comprising a single sheet of resilient metal formed to provide a flat rectangular base portion, a continuation of one end of said base portion being curved upwardly and over the base portion in spaced relation thereto to provide a top portion, said top portion extending longitudinally over the base portion to a position spaced from the end of the base portion and then curving downwardly in an S curve to meet the base portion and terminating in a toe portion disposed along the base portion and terminating spaced from the end of the base portion and being formed to have said toe portion resiliently pressed toward the base portion, a sheet of abrasive material having a portion extending along the underside ofthe base portion and around the end and oversaid top portion, said sheet extending between the toe part and the base and held in place by the pressure therebetween.
5. An article of manufacture comprising a single Sheet of resilient metal formed to provide a flat rectangular base portion one end of said base portion having integrally connected thereto a portion curved upwardly and over the base portion in spaced relation thereto to provide a top portion integral with the base portion, said top portion extending longitudinally over the base portion to a position spaced from the end'of the base portion and being curved at intervals to provide a sinuous top formation and then curving downwardly to meet the base portion and terminating in a toe portion disposed along the base portion and terminating spaced from the end of the base portion'and being formed to have said toe portion resiliently pressed toward the base portion, a layer of displaceable material secured to the bottom of the base and on the top of the top portion, a sheet of abrasive material having a portion extending along the underside of the base portion and around the end and over said top portion, said sheet extending between the toe part and the base and held in place by the pressure therebetween.

An article of manufacture comprising a single sheet of resilient metal formed to provide a flat rectangular base portion one end of said base portion having integrally connected thereto a portion curvedv upwardly and over the base portion in spaced relation thereto to provide a top portion, said top portion extending longitudinally over the base portion to a position spaced from the end of the base portion and formed with at least one portion curved longitudinally of the base portion and then curving downwardly in an S curve to meet the base portion and terminating in a toe portion disposed along the base portion and terminating spaced from the end of the base portion and being formed to have said toe portion resiliently pressed toward the'base portion, a roll of abrasive material disposed between the top and base portions inside one of the curved part having a portion extending from inside of the article between the toe and base portion and around the periphery of the article with the free end held between the toe and the base portion along the underside of the base portion and around the end and over said top portion, said sheet extending between the toe part and the base and held in place by the pressure therebetween.

An article of manufacture comprising a single sheet of resilient metal formed to provide a llat rectangular base portion one end of said base portion having integrally connected thereto a portion curved upwardly and over the base portion in spaced relation thereto to provide a top portion, said top portion extending 1ongitudinally over the base portion to a position spaced from the end of the base portion and formed with at least one portion curved longitudinally of the base portion and then curving downwardly in an S curve to meet the base portion and terminating in a toe portion disposed along -the base portion and terminating spaced from the end of the base portion and being formed to have said toe portion resiliently pressed toward the base portion, a roll of abrasive material disposed between the top and base portions inside one of the curved part having a portion extending from inside of the article between the toe and base portion and around the periphery of the article with the free end held between the toe and the base portion along the underside of the base portion and around the end and Yover said top portion, said sheet extending between the toe part and the base and held in place by the pressure therebetween, said abrasive material extending between the high portions of said curved parts in bridging relation and spaced from the bottoms of the valleys.

A tool for removably holding a strip or roll of abrasive for performing saiding operations comprising a single strip of thin stiff resilient material capable of taking a permanent set, said strip being formed to provide a thin substantially rectangular flat base part, a curved part at one end of said base part integral therewith curving outwardly, upwardly and backwardly, a top portion for said tool being an integral continuation of said curved part extending over the base in spaced relation thereto, a portion integral with the top part extending downward from said top part toward the top of said base part and a portion integral with said downwardly extending portion extending for a material distance along the top and in spring pressed engagement with the top of said base portion and terminating short of the end of the base, a roll of abrasive disposed in the space between the base and top and extending outwardly between the portion extending along the base and surrounding the entire periphery of the tool with the free end disposed between the portion extending along the base and the base said parts of the abrasive where they extend between the part that extends along the base and the base being securely gripped therebetween to hold it securely in place.
9. A sanding tool for removably holding a strip or roll of abrasive for performing sanding operations comprising a single strip of thin stiff resilient material capable of taking a permanent set, said strip being formed to provide a thin substantially rectangular at base part, a. curved part at one end of said base part integral therewith curving outwardly, upwardly and backwardly, a top portion for said tool being an integral continuation of said curved part extending over the base in spaced relation thereto, a portion integral with the top part extending downward from said top part toward the top of said base and being curved in a substantially S curve and a portion integral with said downwardly extending portion providing a foot portion extending for a material distance along the top and terminating spaced from the end of the base and in spring pressed engagement with the top of said base portion due to the inherent resiliency of the material said foot portion being arranged to grip the portions of a sheet of abrasive extending between the foot and the base.
