UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD NELSON Al\TD ALFRED DAVIS, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
METALLIC SHIELD F OR BRAKEMENS BOOTS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 280,223, dated June 26, 1883. Application filed April 28,1883. (No model.)
7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD NELSON and ALFRED DAVIS, both of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields for Brakemens Boots and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a boot provided with our improved shield or protector. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, showing the manner of fastening the protector upon the sole; and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective i views of the shield or protector removed from the boot.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to that class of sole-plates for boots or shoes adapted to protect a portion of the sole, and consisting of a plate having an upward and inward turned flange upon its outer edge; and it consists in the improved construction of a plate of that class especially adapted to be used by brakeas shown at C, so as to avoidany sharp offset or shoulder on the under side of the sole in applying the shield. Along the outer edge of the same, and conforming to the curvature of the sole, runs a flange, D, of a height corresponding to the thickness of the sole, and provided with an inwardly-projecting web or flange, E, adapted to fit between the welt and sole, as shown more clearly by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. This flange E is wedge-shaped in cross-section, so that it may be wedged into the space between the welt and the upper or between the welt and the sole. The flange D should be made of sufficient thickness to stand considerable wear before it will be worn through. It may, if desired, be
provided with holes F, through which screws,
nails, or other fastening devices may be in serted sidewise into the side or edge of the sole; and, as a further means of fastening, both ends of the plate are provided with spurs G G, projecting from the ends of the raised web or flange D, which, in applying the shield, may be driven into the side of the sole upon which it is fastened.
These shields or protectors may be made in different sizes to fit different-sized boots, and, when properly applied and shaped, do not in the least disfigure the boot, while they will prevent the same fromwear at that part where a brakemans boot is most liable to injury.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A shield or protector for brakemens boots, composed of a plate, A, having holes B and a thin inner edge, 0, and provided on its outside edge with a raised web, D, adapted to fit the curvature at the edge of the sole, and having an inwardly-projecting flange, E, and end spurs, G G, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimonythat we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD NELSON.
4 ALFRED DAVIS.
