Description

A. K. GoE'rz Y BOOK CARRIER Fileqoct. 18, 1955 Aug. 6, 11.957
l INVENTOR. mmm K.- sof-rz BY v grr.
Unite ta B001( CARRER Alfred K. Goetz, Cleveland, (Ehio Application Uetober 18, 1955, Serial No. 541,135
2 Claims. (Cl. 2Z4S2) My invention relates to devices for conveniently carrying books, papers and the like, and has as primary object the provision of an inexpensive, readily adjustable and eficient device of this character.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of the parts of book carriers and embodies a handle and a wrap-around member secured thereto and adapted to be wrapt around books to be carried, the wrap-around supplying the desired stilfness to the packed carrier to properly hold and support books therein with a single belt-like clamping element.
With the above primary and other incidental objects in view, as will be more fully apparent from the specification, the invention intended to be protected by Letters Patent consists of the features of construction, and the parts and combinations thereof, as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, or their equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein is found a preferred but, obviously, not necessarily the only form of embodiment of the invention,
Fig. l is a perspective view of a book carrier in accordance with the invention, the carrier supporting a plurality of books;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more in detail to the exemplified form of the invention shown in the drawing, book carrier 2 embodies a handle member 3 including a handle 4 and a bar-like base portion 5 provided with a sligthly recessed bottom face 6. Handle member 3 has its base portion 2,801,781 Patented Aug. 6, 1957 5 seated upon a bottom plate '7 attached thereto by screws 8 and forms with bottom plate 7 an elongated slot 9 for a sheet-like wrap-around member lll of substantial length and width extended through slot 9 and tightly clamped between the handle member and the bottom plate when screws 8 are screwed home. Wrap-around member 10 is made of sheet material, such as plastic, t0 provide a member having inherent stiffness and strength for holding a plurality of books 11 when the wrap-around member is folded tightly around such books and held in folded position by a belt-like member 12 shiftably extended through a slot 14 in handle member 3 above slot 9. This belt-like member is preferably made of a canvas strap and includes a buckle 15 permitting proper clamping action of the beltlike member around the folded wrap-around member.
A thus constructed book carrier permits by Wraparound member lli? and a single belt stable and convenient support of diderently sized books and papiers without eX- cessive load and wear on the belt. The attachment of wrap-around member 10 to handle member 3, of course, may be accomplished in any suitable manner Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. ln a book carrier a base member having a flat top face, a handle member with a flat bottom face seated on the top face of the base member, an elongated sheet-like wrap-around member having its middle portion frictionally held between the top face of the base and the bottom face of the handle member, and a single belt fully encircling the Wrap-around member and freely slidably eX- tended through a passage in said handle member, a said belt adapted to hold the Wrap-around member in position around books supported by the carrier to permit such books to be supported without excessive load on the belt.
2. A book carrier as described in claim` l, wherein the passage in the handle member is formed by a recess in the bottom portion of the handle member centrally thereof and the top face of the base member oppo-site said recess.
