AUTOMATIC FEEDING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,084, dated June 26, 1883.
Application filed February 23, 1 883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. Rose, of Westerly, in the county of \Vashington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Feeding Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
My improvements relate to apparatus for supplying feed to animals automatically ata regulated interval of time after theapparatus has been set.
The object of the invention is to furnish an inexpensive apparatus, of simple construction, and occupying comparatively little space, and it consists in certain novel features of constructi on and arrangement, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a feed-box fitted with the automatic delivery mechanism. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig, 3 is a detail View of the cam-wheel by which the latch is moved.
The hopper or box, or it may be a chute, A, is provided at its under side or lower end with a door or flap, a, attached by hinges I), which are preferably made of vulcanized rubber, so as to prevent rust, which might interfere with the easy working of the apparatus.
Upon one side of the box is a case, B, which is to contain clock-work or other suitable mechanism operated by spring-p ower for imparting motion to the shaft 0, so as to give the shaftone revolution in twelve hours, more or less.
011 shaft 0 is fixed a disk or pulley, cl, and also a cam wheel or dial, 6, that is clamped to the pulley (l by a nut, f, on the end of shaft 0. The wheel 6 is countersunk or recessed to receive the pulley, and is also recessed on its outer face to receive a dial-ring, g, that is marked in hours from I to XII, similar to a clock-dial. The wheel 0 is also formed with a cam projection, 71.
The flap a is held upward or closed by a sliding latch, i, fitted in the side of the box. The outer end of the latch extends beneath the wheel 0, and is formed with a stud carrying a grooved friction roller, k, taking against the face of the wheel in position for contact by the cam projection h as the wheel revolves. A fixed pointer is also provided on the shaft 0 or other convenient place for indicating on the dial 9.
In the operation of the apparatus, the flap a being closed, the feed is placed in the box, nut f is unscrewed to loosen the cam-wheel e, and the latter then turned back the number of hours that it is desired to have elapse before the feed shall be supplied, and the wheel is then clamped by the nut. As soon as the cam, by rotation of shaft 0, reaches the roller on the latch, the latter is moved back, thus releasing the flap and allowing the feed to escape into the receptacle placed to receive it, to which the animal has access.
This apparatus can be readily set for any desired number ofhours or fractions thereof, and, being of simple construction, is not liable to get out of order.
The apparatus will all be inclosed in a suitable case provided with a hinged door, so as to form a complete article.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of latch i, cam-wheel c, operating-shaft c, pulley (l, and nut f with the box A and hinged flap a, substantially as deseribed, for operation, as specified.
2. In automatic feeders, the adjustable dialwheel 6, provided with cam 71, in combination with shaft 0, pulley (l, and latch i, substantially as shown and described.
3. In automatic feeders, the cam-wheel 0, recessed to receive the friction-pulley, and having a recessed face to receive a dial-ring, substantially as described.
HENRY XVILLIAM ROSE.
