BURGLARQALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming To all whom it mag/concern,.-
Be it known that I, WM. HfWRIGHT, of Atlanta, in the county of Cass and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in burglar-alarms; and it consists in the combination of the lock-frame with a pivoted plate which is connected to it at one end, and which plate carries the nipple to receive the catch,
and is provided with sharp points ,to catch in the jamb ofthe door, with a sidewiseimoving trigger, which is operated by the door, and a set-screw for securing the loclcplate in position upon the door, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a burglar-alarm which will serve both to lock the door and, in case the door should be forced open, will snap a cap, so as to cause an alarm.
Figure l is a side elevation of Iny invention complete. Fig. 2 is a similar view, taken from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the securer. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the rod or bolt which engages with the trigger.
A represents a plate of any suitable shape, size, or construction, and upon which is pivoted the hammer' B, which is operated by the spring D, which is secured upon the plate at one end, and which "has its inner end to catch under the lower end of the hammer, as shown. Pivoted upon the front end of this plateis the door-securer F, which has the usual sharp points, H, for catching in the j amb of the door, and which has the nipple I, screwed into a suitable socket formed in its inner and upper corner, to receive it. Vhen the securer is turned at right angles to the lock-plate, the nipple is held in just the proper position to have the cap explode by the fallin g of the hammer. In the lower front edge of the hammer is formed a notch, O, with which the catch L engages. This catch L is placed upon one end of a sliding angular rod, I), which extends through the leek-frame, and which rod has the Ilat spring Q, to catch under its head, for the purpose of always drawing the catch inpart of Letters Patent No. 280,002, dated June 2e, 1883.
` Application filed Apri14,1883. (Model.)
ward against the side of the lock-plate, so that it will be in a position to engage with the hammer and hold it in a locked position. Through the plate A is made a suit-able` hole, through which is passed the set-screw R, by means of which the plate is secured to the door in such a manner that the opening of the door will not push the plate around into a line with the hinged plate or securer.
In attaching this alarm to a door, the securer v F is Iirst turned into a straight line with the plate A, and then the door is opened, the sharp points placed against the door-jamb,and then the door is closed, so as to force the points into the jamb. The plate A is then swung around at right angles, so as to bear against the inner side of the door, and the set-Screw is then passed through the plate A into the door. The head ofthe rod or bolt to'which the catch is secured extends outward from the inner side ofthe plate, so that when the door is forced open it bears directly against this head, and thus forces the catch sidewise, so as to disengage it from the notch in the lower end of the This deviceis intended to be used with either right or left hand doors, and upon windows.
If desired, instead of having the hammer ex# plode a cap, it may be made to ring a bell in some other part of the building by striking against a lever which is connected with the bell-wire. 4In case it should be desired, a bar rel can be attached to the nipple, so as to explode a charge of powder. I do not limit myself to any details of construction in this respect, for they may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the lock-plate, the hanr mer having a notch in its lower end, an endwise spring-actuated rod having a catch secured to its inner end to engage with the ham mer, and the pivoted door-securer provided with-a nipple, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I-affix my si gnature in Witnesses:
J. M. McREYNoLDs, WILLIAM D. B'RowNINc.
