' W". G. HENSHAW.
, f I WIRE STRETOHBR. W 93 Patented June 26, 1883.
, UNITED [STATES PAT NT WILLIS o. nnnsnnw, or EAST HAMBURG, NEW YORK.
WlRE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION gforming part of Letters Patent No. 279,948, dated June 26, 1883.
Application filed February 26, 1883. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLis G. HENSHAW, a citizen of'the United States of America, rcsiding at East Hamburg, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire'Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This device is principally for stretching barbed fence-wire, to fasten it tautly to the postjand theinventien consists in its simple,v
construction and application, as fully hereinafter explained;
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan showing the device applied to a post; Fig. 2, an end view of the clamping device removed from'the other parts.
A represents a common crank-handle fastened to the end of along screw-rod or bar, 15, this bar working through and in the head 0 of a clamping arm or arms, a a, which is of sufiicient length one side of the post or pole D, as in Fig. 1. At the ends of the arms a is fastened a short chain, b, terminating in a hook or grapple, b, which catches into the post, as shown. The greater the strain the tighter it holds. This gives the whole clamping device. If the post is small, the chain b is .taken up one or more links by merely taking out and resetting the pin' or bolt 0. The clamp G a is made, usually, with a depression at a, near the upper part, as in Fig.1, to more securely hold orv clamp said post, though it is not indispensable. On
to embrace or partly inclose.
the end of screw-rod B is a swivel, d, termi-, nating in a hook or gripe, d, which holds the wire while being drawn taut by the turning of the crank-handle A. This gives a direct and straight draft on the wire, and when drawn to the post is there secured by staples, &c., as is usual.v This comprises the whole description of and working of my device. It does away with levers, ratchets, ropes, hinged grappling or clamping irons, &e.,'such as are now used. '45
I am acquainted with a patent which has a forked arm or. lever, 1 o-attaeh to the post, and coiling a. rope (attached to the wire) around an arbor provided with a handle and threads, and other appliances connected therewith; such I do not claim.
I claim-- In a wire-stretcher, the combination of the wire-stretching screw-threaded rod B, having the crank-handle A at one end and the swivel hookor gripe d d at the other, withthe screwthreaded clamping-arm 0, through which the rod B works, having a shoulder, a, to fit over the corner of the post, and a rigid extension, a, provided at the outer end with the chain 6 and hook b, all substantially as and for the, purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, this 7th day of I in presence of two witnesses, February, 1883.
'TILLIS C. HENSHAW.
