Description

DAMARIN & BROWER. Gas Lighting lhstrument;
Patnted April 24, 1860.
m h m m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED DAMARIN AND GEO. G. BROWER, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CONSTRUCTION OF INSTRUMENT FOR LIGHTING GAS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,971, dated April 24, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED DAMARIN and GEORGE C. BROWER, both of the city of New Orleans, in the State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVaX-Taper Torches, Commonly Used for Lighting Gas; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Our improvements consist in combining the pipe which holds the taper With a gas key; in bending said holder so that the lighted end may be passed into the top of the gas shade; in placing a perforated disk or a funnel shaped flame-guard near the end of the pipe to protect the taper from its own flame; and lastly in leaving an open space between the end of the pipe and the said flame guard for the double purpose of preventing the pipe from becoming hot and to permit the taper to be fed forward by the thumb and finger.
To enable others to make and use our i11- vention we will proceed to describe its construction.
A in the drawing represents a wooden staff having a gas key at the end.
B is a brass tube to hold the taper, attached to the staff.
C is a conical guard attached by two wires about an inch long from its base to the end of the pipe, having its apex perforated to allow the taper to pass through.
D is an opening cutinto the pipe near its middle to facilitate the extraction of the taper should both ends accidentally be lost.
We are thus enabled to combine the taper with the gas key, an arrangement incompatible with the straight taper holder; to avoid the smoking of the globe etc, caused by lighting through the bottom; to prevent contact of the taper with heated metal except at the slight point of support close to the flame where it passes through the guard, and to permit the feed to be operated by the fingers without the need of any slides or other apparatus.
W'e do not claim the gas key nor the tubular taper holder.
What we do claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the wax taper holder with the gas key.
2. The bending of the taper holder so to light gas through the top of the gas globe.
3. The placing a flame guard beyond the end of the taper pipe.
4. The leaving an open space between the said guard and the end of the pipe all sub stantially as described.
