Description

v June 25, l957 A. RAFFAELLI 2,79' 7,l00
United States Patent O GAMES Adorno Raffaelli, Reading, Pa.
Application October 12, 1955, Serial No. 540,017
2 Claims. (Cl. 273-129) 'Ihe present nvention relates to an amusement device wherein a disc-like game piece is manually propelled or rolled along a playing area and the primary object of the nvention is provision of a novel device of this character.
Another object of the nvention is to provide in com` bination, a disc and a launching and propelling device under the control of the player by whom the disc-like object may be manually propelled to roll along the playing area a distance depending upon the skill of the player in propelling and launching the same.
A further object of the nvention is the provision of a launching and propelling tape that may be wrapped around the periphery of the disc-like member, having a portion adjacent one end, under the control of the player's hand whereby, upon a swinging movement of the players arm and subsequent release of the disc-like member, a rotating or spinning motion will be imparted to said disc-like member which, upon contact with the playing area, will be caused to roll a considerable distance.
Still another object of the nvention is to provide on the launching tape a hand grip member that enables the player to determine the exact point, near the limit of the swing, at which the disc-like game piece is released whereby unwinding of the tape on the released game piece will impart the rotating or spinning motion thereto.
It is -also the purpose of the nvention to provide at the outer end of the tape a means to retain the same under the control of the player when the tape has been entirely unrolled from the disc-like member upon the completion of the launching movement.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the disc-like member with the projecting device arranged thereon and a player's hand holding the disc-like member prior to projection, With the tape retaining means surrounding the playefs wrist;
Figure 2 is a Vertical section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the finger engaging member with a portion of the tape secured thereto.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the disclike playing member which may be formed of wood, rubber, plastic or the like. The size or weight of the disc may be varied as desired, for example to suit the physical characteristics of the players. The main object is to roll the disc as far as possible along a given playing area.
The propelling means includes a tape 2 of an effective length enabling it to be wrapped around the periphery of the disc about 31/2 times. At a point adjacent the outer end there is provided a hand grip member which may comprise a body 3 of substantially triangular section having an arcuate side 5 more or less concentric to 2,797,100 Patented June 25, 1957 the line of intersection of the plane sides 4. At a medial point of the body 3 is formed a groove 6 adapted to receive the tape 2. The portion of the tape 2 proximate to engagement with the groove 6 is wrapped or restricted from its flat form to form a cord-like outer end 7 for the tape. The section of this portion that is engaged in the groove 6 of the hand grip member 3 is provided with a Conventional reverse loop 8, or the equivalent, to secure the same in the groove 6 and prevent slippage at this point.
At the terminal of the outer end of the tape 2 is secured as shown at 9 a wrist engaging loop 10 formed of any suitable fabric or the like adapted to be slipped over the playefs wrist as clearly shown in Figure l. This retains the tape under control of the player after the disc-like member has been released therefrom.
In operation the disc is propelled along a given playing area with the aid of the launching tape. The main objective is to roll the disc 1 along the playing area for as great a distance as possible. Score is awarded on a basis of the distance the disc is rolled. The tape 2 is wound around the periphery of the disc 1 and the wrist loop 10 is slipped over the playefs hand, as clearly shown in Figure l, and the hand grip 3 is grasped in the fingers. The player launches the device by swinging his arm in much the same manner as in bowling a ball down a bowling alley. At a point near the end of the swing the hand grip member is released and the disc proceeds to unwind itself from the tape. In doing so, a spinning motion is imparted thereto and additional velocity may be given the spinning disc by a snapping or pulling action on the tape. As the disc becomes separated from the launching tape it hurtles through the air, landing some distance from the player and starts its roll down the playing area. Inertia of the spinning disc causes it to roll some distance in accordance with the skill of the player.
Having thus described the nvention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. An amusement device comprising a disc-like game piece, a flexible tape encircling the periphery of said game piece a plurality of times, a hand piece secured on said tape and projecting radially from said game piece, said tape having a free outer end terminating in a loop for attachment around the wrist of a player, said loop being in circumferentially spaced relation from the said hand piece whereby the player's fingers may engage said hand piece while the said free end remains attached to his wrist, and said hand piece may be released at will to institute launching of the game piece while said loop remains attached around the player's wrist.
2. An amusement device comprising a disc-like game piece, a flexible tension element encircling the periphery of said game piece, a hand piece secured on said element and projecting radially from said game piece, said element having a free outer end and means carried at said free end for Vattachment to the wrist of a player, said means being circumferentially spaced from said hand piece whereby the players fingers may operatively engage said hand piece and release same to institute launching of the game piece while said means remains attached to the player's wrist.
