(Cl. 139-166) This invention relates to improvements in looms, and in particular reinforcing means for slide rod check straps wherein strips of leather are inserted between the end portions of inside and outside straps where the picker stick strikes the straps whereby wear in the bolt or rod openings of the straps is reduced to a minimum and the efliciency of the check straps is increased.

The purpose of this invention is to eliminate excessive wear in slide rod check straps of looms which results in dragging and breaking and thereby interfering with efiicient operation of the loom.

Slide rod check straps of looms are subjected to excessive wear because the picker sticks strike the straps at points spaced inwardly from the ends and this continuous pounding elongates holes through the ends of the straps with the result that the straps drag and break. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates reinforcing straps inserted between inner and outer sections of the check strap of a loom with the reinforcing straps extended from the slide rod to points spaced around the arcuate sections of the straps.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide reinforcing means in slide rod check straps of looms which prevent wear in holes extended through the straps and make the check traps more eificient.

Another object of the invention is to provide reinforcing means for check straps of looms in which the reinforcing means may be used in combination with straps now in use.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for reinforcing arcuate sections at the ends of slide rod check straps of looms in which the reinforcing elements are of simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies fiber plates secured between ends of check straps of looms with fastening elements and strips of leather extended from the fiber plates and slide rods to points extended substantially around arcuate sections at the ends of the check straps reinforcing the straps at the connecting points and also at points where the straps are engaged by picker sticks of looms.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a plan view showing the improved check strap with parts broken away showing the mounting of the reinforcing elements in the strap.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the check strap assembly taken on line 22 of Figure 1, also showing the reinforcing elements between the ends of the sections of the strap.

Figure 3 is a cross section taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1 also showing the reinforcing elements between the ends of sections of the strap.

Figure 4 is a detail showing a fiber plate such as used against the inner surfaces of both ends of the sections of the check strap, the plates having openings therethrough for rivets or other suitable fasteners.

Patented June 25, 1957 Figure 5 is a detail showing one of the' leather reinforcing strips positioned between the end portions of the check straps and extending from the slide rods to points substantially around arcuate sections at the ends of the check straps.

Referring now to the drawing, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improved slide rod check strap of this invention includes an inner strap 10, an outer strap 11, a slide rod 12, an adjusting rod 13, fiber sheets or plates 14 positioned against inner surfaces of the ends of the straps 10 and 11, and leather rein forcing strips 15 and 16 extended from the slide rod 12 to points 17 and 18, respectively, which are positioned beyond the wear areas, as indicated bythe numerals 19 and 20 and which receive the pounding of picker sticks of the loom. The fibre sheets or plates 14, as will be presently understood, prevent elongation of the slide rod receiving strap holes in the free ends of the strap 10, 11.

As illustrated in Figure l, the check strap sections 10 and 11 are formed with arcuate ends and the ends of the slide rod 12 extend through openings 21 and 22 of the strap sections with the extended ends of the slide rod, as indicated by the numerals 23 and 24 extended upwardly, substantially at angles of 45 degrees to prevent interference with rivets and outside collars 25 and 26 of the adjusting rod 13. The adjusting rod 13 is also provided with inner set collars 27 and 28 which coact with the collars '25 and 26 to retain the ends of the lug strap sections in position. 'As will be appreciated, the adjusting rod 13 prevents spreading of the strap ends. Thus, binding of the trailing end of the strap on slide rod 12 isprevented when the opposite end is being actuated by the picker stick.

As illustrated in Figures 1 and 4 the fiber sheets or plates 14 are provided with openings 29 that are positioned to'receive the adjusting rod 13, and also openings 30 and 31 in the upper edge and 32 and 33 in the lower edge by means of which the plates aresecured-to inner surfaces of the ends of the strap sections by fasteners, such as rivets 34. The ends of the plates 14 are provided with arcuate recesses 35 which receive the slide rod. It is to be noted also that since the adjusting or tie rod 13 extends through the fibre plates 14 the rod 13 will function to prevent shifting of fibre plates 14 toward the adjacent free end of the strap 10 under the combined action of the picker stick and slide rod 12 when the loom is in operation. This relieves the rivets 34 from excessive load and enables us to reduce the number of the latter.

One of the ends of the leather reinforcing strips 15 and 16 is provided with an arcuate recess 36'that is positioned to receive the slide rod 12, as shown in Figure 3,

and, also as illustrated in Figure 3 the strips 15 and 16 are secured in position between the check strap sections with stitching, as indicated by the numeral 37.

The slide rod 12 is provided with a socket 38 in a tab 39 extended from one side thereof to facilitate connecting the slide rod to a lug on a portion of the loom frame.

With the parts assembled as illustrated and described the connections at the ends of the leather check straps are reinforced with the fiber plates or sheets and the arcuate portions that are positioned to receive the pounding of the picker sticks are reinforced with the leather strips.

It will be understood that modificationswithin the scope of the appended claims may be made in the de sign and arrangement of the parts without departing from the .spirit of the invention. 1

What is claimed is: l

1. A slide rod check strap for use on a loom comprising j-uxtapositioned strap sections, spaced wear reduci a a r e A r ing plates positioned against inner surfaces of said strap sections and leather strips extended from said wear reducing plates to points spaced inwardly from the ends of said strap sections. 7

2. In a slide rod check strap for use on a loom,'the combination which comprises strap'se'ctions, fiber wear reducing sheets-secured to inner surfaces between the ends of said strap sections, a sliderod extended through the ends of said strap sections, and wear reducing strips of flexible material secured between the strap sections and extended from the slide rod to points spaced inwardly from said slide rod.

3. In a slide rod check strap for use on a loom, the combination which comprises strap sections, fiber wear reducing sheets secured with rivets to inner surfaces between the ends of said strap sections, a slide rod extended through the ends of said strap sections, and wear reducing strips of flexible material secured with stitching between the strap sections and extended from the slide rod to points spaced inwardly from said slide rod.

In a slide rod check strap for use on a loom, the combination which comprises strap sections, fiber wear reducing sheets secured to inner surfaces between the ends of said strap sections, aslide rod extended through the ends of said strap sections, and wear reducing strips of flexible material secured between the strap sections and extended from the slide rod to points spaced inwardly from said slide rod, the ends of said slide rod being diagonally positioned.

In a picker stick check strap for looms wherein the opposite end portions of the strap have transverse holes through which a loom carried guide rod extends so as to slidably mount the strap on the guide rod and wherein the picker stick of the loom operates against opposed strap end portions inwardly of the guide rod to actuate the strap to and fro on the latter; the combination of a tie means connecting opposed end portions of the strap at the opposite side of the guide rod from the picker stick so as to predeterminedly limit spreading of said strap end portions under picker stick action.

In a multiple ply picker stick check strap for looms wherein the opposite end portions of the strap have transverse holes through which a loorn carried guide rod extends so as to slidably mount the strap on the guide rod and wherein the picker stick of the loom operates against opposed strap end portions inwardly of the guide rod to actuate the strap to and fro on the latter; the combination of a tie means connecting opposed end portions of the strap at the opposite side of the guide rod from the picker stick so as to predeterminedly limit spreading of said strap end portions under picker stick action, and wear resisting insert pieces secured between adjacent strap plies adjacent and in opposition to said guide rod at the last mentioned side of the latter to prevent elongation of said strap holes in the direction of the free ends of said strap.

7. The combination set forth in claim 6, and said tie means having portions extending through said insert pieces whereby to sustain the latter against shifting movement toward the free ends of the strap under the combined action of the said slide rod and picker sticker when the loom is in operation.

In a. multiple ply picker stick check strap for looms wherein the opposite end portions of the strap have transverse holes through which a loom carried guide rod extends so as to slidably mount the strap on the guide rod and wherein the picker stick of the loom operates against opposed strap end portions inwardly of the guide rod to actuate the strap to and fro on the latter; the combination of wear-resisting insert pieces secured to and between adjacent plies of said strap adjacent and in opposition to said guide rod at the side of the latter which is remote from the picker stick so as to prevent elongation of said strap holes in the direction of the free ends of said strap.
