W/L/AM f3. #VH/7E ATTO/VY United States Patent() i INTERLOCKING METAL WEATHER STRIPPING FOR JALOUSIE WINDOWS This invention relates to building constructions, and more particularly to improvements in interlocking metal weather stripping for jalousies or other types of louvre windows.
One object of this invention is to provide a jalousie window of the above nature having means around all four sides of the window frame which will effectively seal out wind and rain when the window is closed.
Another object is to provide a jalousie window in which the end clips which pivotally support the movable panels are equipped with interlocking weather strip means.
A further object is to provide a jalousie window construction in which the topmost 'and lowermost of the movable panels are also equipped with weather strip means which interlock with the header and sill of the frame when the Window is closed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a jalousie Window having interlocking weather strip means 'along all four margins of the window frame.
A still further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eicient and durable 1n use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawings, one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of a jalousie window embodying one form of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side View, on an enlarged scale, of the same, showing the arrangement of the end clips on the side of the frame.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the mechanism shown in Fig. 2, `as Viewed from the left of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective View, from below, showing one of the end clips in a partially open position.
Fig. 5 is a bottom view of one of the end clips disposed in its fully opened position, and showing the side jamb in section.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of the top rail of the window frame on an enlarged scale, taken on line 6-6 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale of the bottom sill taken on line 7-7 of Fig. l.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates generally a frame for a jalousie window comprising side jambs 11 and 12, a bottom sill 13 and a top header rail 14, said parts being preferably fabricated of extruded metal.
A plurality of glass panels 15 are supported in the usual manner for swingable movement about horizontal axes by means of end clips 16. The outer edge of each y end clip 16 is provided with a forwardly projecting flange portion 17, the lower half of which includes a portion 2,796,640 Patented June 25, 1957 which is bent outwardly and backwardly to form a channel 18, having a lower outwardly ared end 19, for a purpose which will be apparent later.
Each ofthe side jambs 11 and 12 is provided at its inner edge with a forwardly projecting tlange 20 which is slotted vertically along its forward edge as at 21, to receive a lip 22 projecting rearwardly from the channel vportion 18 of the clip 16, when the panel 15 is in its closed position. j
The flanges 20 of the side jambs 11 and 12 are provided at vertically spaced intervals, corresponding with the positions of the anges 17 of the clips 16, with forwardly positioned reversely-directed channel elements 23 which may be riveted to the side jambs, as shown in Fig. 5, the lower ends of which are slotted as at 24 to receive the upper end of the channeled portion 18 of the clip 16 for connection to a pivot pin 25.
The end clips 16 are also provided with rearwardly extending links 26 for pivotal connection at 26a to a common vertical operating bar 27 which may be reciprocated by any conventional mechanism (not shown) for simul aneous swinging movement of the panels 15.
Operation ln operation, it will be seen that when the glass panels 15 are positioned in substantially vertical, or closed position, the lips 22 on the end clips 16 will be disposed within the slots 21 of the anges 20, whereas the anged portion 17 of said end clips 16 will be received within the channel elements 23. Moreover, the outwardly ared portion 19 at the lower extremity of each clip 16, will overlap and embrace the upper extremity 28 of each of the channel elements 23, positioned next below said clips.
The channels 18 of the clips 16 may also be provided with a slight inward taper, thus insuring a water tight seal with respect to the adjacent channel 23 of the jamb.
As a further precaution against the entry of wind and rain through the window, and in order to provide interlocking weather stripping around all four margins of the frame 10, means is provided for sealing the upper edge of the topmost glass panel 15, as shown in Fig. 6, and the bottom edge of the lowermost glass panel 15, as shown in Fig. 7. In the present embodiment, such sealing means comprises a generally U-shaped strip 29 of flexible material, having a longitudinal rib 30 projecting exteriorly along one of the legs of the U and fitted over the respective edge of the overlapped panels 15.
The strip 29 includes in one instance an inside face 31 of a drip shield 32, and in the other case, the strip 29a comprises a front face 33 of the sill 13. These strips 29 are adapted to seat in a horizontal groove 34 pro vided along the drip shield 32, and in a horizontal groove 35, provided along the front of the sill 13, respectively.
While there has been disclosed in this specication one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other equivalent forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
l. In metal weather stripping for jalousie windows, the combination including a pair of slotted side jambs, end clips pivoted to said jambs for supporting a plurality of horizontally swingable glass panels, a plurality of vertically aligned channel elements mounted on said side janibs adjacent Asaid end clips, each of said clips being provided with a forwardly projecting ange portion land a. rearwardly extending lip portion, said side jambs being. provided with ak forwardlyY exposed vertically ,ex- 'tending slot to receive said lipsjtlierewitliin, 'said'chnlnel elements being rearwardly disposed to 'receive the yflange portions of the lend clips lwhen said window s in closedpositio'n.
Y2. A device as defined -in claim 1, wherein the lower portion of each lclip has a U-shapedchannel portion in alignment with the channel element of said side jambs, 'said channel'portions'cornprising side lips to be received Within the slots in the side jambs, the lower extremity References Cited in the le of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,335,929 vAuen Apr. 6, 1920 2,327,246 Bunjee Aug. 17, 1943 2,654,921 manchard oct. 13, 1953 2,716,783 reg-an sept, 6, 1955
