Patented June 19,1883.
W1 TJV .7156 ES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTONINO MAGGIO, OF NEV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
SCHOOL-SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,656, dated June 19, 1883,
v Application filed August 18,1282. (No model.)
i To all whom it may concern:
being had to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification.-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a slate embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the samereversed. Fig. '3 is a perspective view of the pencil-sharpening attachment, which forms a part of the invention,
Corresponding parts in the sever-a1 figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to slates; and itconsists, in the combination with the slate-frame,
-of two studs, one of which is swiveledand carries a pencil-sharpener, and both of which serve to support the slate in an inclined positi on, when reversed, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawings represents an ordinary slate, at the upper corners of which two knobs or studs, B C, are secured. One of said studs, 0, has a transverse perforation, forming a bearing for a shaft, I), provided at one end with akey or handle, E, and carrying at its other end the pencil sharpener F. Said sharpener consists of a funnel provided with slots, and equipped in the usual manner with knives or cutters, the cutting-edge of oneof which, H, may be toothed or serrated, as at J, so as to work more effectively, while the edge of the other cutter may be smooth, so as tofi-nish the point nicely. Thes'tud (l is swiveled in the slate-frame, so that the device may readily be turned to any desirable position for operation.
The operation. of my invention will be read ily understood. The sharpenermaybe turned by means of the key while the slatepencil is held stationary, or the pencil may be turned while the sharpener is held stationary. By
turning the slate over, the studs B 0 support it in an inclinedposition, which is convenient and swiveled stud 0, having shaft D, provided with the key or handle E and pencil-sharpener F, as and for the purpose set forth.
I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' ANTONINO MAG-G10.
