Description

(NoModeL) E. S. LEAYGRAFT.
FLANGED CLAMP.
Patented June 19,1883.
UNITED STATES EDWIN s. LEAYGRAFT, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
FLANGED CLAM P.
sPEcIFIcA'rIoN forming art of Letters Patent No. 279,576, dated June 19, 1883.
Application filed January 11, 1883. No model.)
To all whom, it may'concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN S. LEAYORAFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ersey City, in the State of New Jersey, have-invented a new and useful Improvement in Flanged Clamps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and accurate description.
The obj ect of my improvement is to provide a clamp for the purpose of attaching pipes, tubes, or standards in an upright position to a supporting-base, and at the same time offers a means whereby the pipe may be readily adjusted to the desired height.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved clamp, Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same.
A represents the flanged clamp, composed of the upright portion a and a flange, b, secured thereto. The upright portion a of clamp Ais cut by the slot O, which extends at right angles to the flanged portion 1). The upright portion a, at its junction with the flanged portion b, is cut with a slot, D, parallel with the flanged portion 1), to a distance equal to about one-third of the circumference of the upright portion a, and extending an equal distance on each side of slot 0. On the upright portionaof clamp A-may be placed lugs or shoulders E E. Proper holes are cut in these lugs E, through which is passed the set-screw e or other proper fastening. The flanged portion b of clamp A may be attached to the desired supports by means of screws or bolts passing through the holes f. Instead of the lugs E, rings or other suitable means may be employed for bringing together and fastening the edges of the slot 0.
The mode of operation is as follows: The clamp A being first attached to the desired support I by its flanged 'portion b, the tube or other upright to be supported is placedin or passed through the interior of the upright portion a of clamp A, and the edges of the slot G are brought and held firmly together by means of the lugs E, with screw 6 or other suitable fastening. The slot D permits the upright portion a to be brought in close contact with the supported pipe or tube through the entire length of said upright portion, thus completely obviating any twisting or bending and holding the tube or column in the desired position.
-Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A flanged clamp slotted or cut through its upright portion and partially slotted or cut at the junction of its upright and flanged portions, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A flanged clamp slotted or cut through its upright portion and partially slotted or cut at the junction of its upright and flanged portions, and having its upright portion provided with suitable fastenings for drawing and holding the edges of the slot together.
myhand this 30th day of December, in the year 1882. m
E. S. LEAYCRAFT.
In presence of CHARLES G. (Jon, B. T. VAN BOSKERCK.
