OAR-WHEEL CHILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lZ-atent No. 279,520, dated June 19, 1883. Application filed March 8,188]. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB N. BARR, of Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Penn sylvania, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Ventilating Sand-Flange Chills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of chills in which a portion of the flange on the side adjacent to the tread is cast against sand; and it consists in constructing the chill so that the exit of the gas generated in the sand on this side of the flange may be facilitated, and the tendency of the gas to force its way inward between the wheelv and the chill may be obviated. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters indicate the same parts throughout.
Figure 1 is a vertical section, showing the constructionof my improved chill. Fig. 2 is a section through the center, representing one fourth part of an ordinary flask used for mold ing car-wheels, with a wheel in position. Fig. 3 is a partial plan view of the chill reversed; and Fig. 4, a horizontal section of Fig. 8, show ing the interior of the annular chamber.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the chill, B the cope, and O the dragthe three parts which go to make up the mold. D represents a groove to be filled with sand or other non-conducting material; E, a groove or receptacle opening from the groove D; and F represents holes (four or five in number) 0011- necting the groove or chamber E with the exwhen cast.
the proper shape to the flange of the wheel On account of the small size of the chamber E, it remains practically free from sand. The flask is then. prepared for casting the wheel in the ordinary way. When the molten metal is poured into the mold and comes in contact with the sand in the groove D the gas generated thereby readily makes its way through the thin layer of loosely-packed sand into the chamber E, and thence passes freely by means of the openings F to the external air. Heretofore the openings represented by F extended directly into the groove or receptacle D,which contains the sand. It was necessary to make them very numerous and close together to provide an effective means of exit for the gas. By the interposition of 5 5 the chamber E the means of exit for the gas is very much improved, and the expense and labor, with the consequent injury to the chill, due to the formation of a large number of holes are avoided.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s A one-part car-wheel chill having the following elements: first, a peripheral receptacle in the flange-face of the chill adapted for the re ception of non-conducting material; second,an annular chamber connecting with the sand-receptacle, and, third, a series of independent vent-openings communicating with the annular chamber, substantially as described.
