Description

June 1957 w. FELENCHAK 2,795,052
COMBINATION TRANSFERRING PUNCH AND LOCATING CENTER puucn Filed Oct. s, 1956 FIG. I. a
FIG. 2 14 IN V EN TOR.
William Felenchak United States Patent 015cc Patented June 11, 1957 COMBINATION TRANSFERRING PUNCH AND LOCA'I'ING CENTER PUNCH William Felenchak, Ansonia, Conn.
Application October 8, 1956, Serial No. 614,684
1 Claim. (Cl. 33-191) This invention relates to centering punches.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a combination transferring punch and locating center punch which will provide a combination tool that can be used by all mechanics and which will locate or transfer the center of threaded or drilled holes of various sizes quickly and accurately.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a combination transferring punch and locating center punch of the above type which can be used for locating centers by using tangents whereby to effect an economy of layout time.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a combination transferring punch and locating center punch bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation and use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view shown partly in elevation of a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view showing the device in operative use;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the invention in use for locating centers by the use of tangents; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view shown partly in section of a modified form of the present invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown a center punch having a conical tip 10, the cylindrical portion 11, and the elongated reduced shank 12, the upper end of which is externally threaded as at 13, substantially as illustrated.
An elongated cylindrical interchangeable sleeve 14 is provided with a longitudinal bore 15 which slidably receives therethrough the shank 12, the sleeve 14 at one end being provided with the enlarged bore 16 adapted to receive therewithin the centering punch 10, 11. A removable head member 17 is provided with an internally threaded bore 18 into which is screwed the externally threaded portion of the shank 12, the head member 17 being provided with an enlarged cylindrical bore 19 which communicates with the internally threaded bore 18. A coil spring 20 sleeves the shank 12 intermediate the end of the sleeve 14 and the inner end of the bore 19 of the head member, as shown in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 2,'the tool may be used to locate or transfer the center of a threaded or drilled hole of any size quickly and accurately simply by changing the sleeve 14.
As shown in Fig. 3, the tool may also be used for location of centers by using tangents, effecting an economy of layout time. By using the diameter sleeve 14 that is equal to the size of the drill that will be used, the face of the sleeve being adjusted until its perimeter is tangent to the sides of the square 21 of the layout block 22. This method of removing metal by drilling is employed by tool and die makers in a manner well known to those skilled in the art.
Referring now to Fig. 4, there is shown an attachment adapted to be used with the present invention for centering round bars 23 or cylindrical shaped objects quickly and accurately. A hollow conical member 24 is integrally formed at its smaller end with the hollow cylindrical portion 25 which receives therethrough the sleeve 14, a set screw 26 being screw threaded through the cylindrical portion 25 and bearing on the sleeve 14. The member 24 provides a centering bell. By placing the punch 10 flat on the end of the bar 23 and at the same time loosening the screw 26, the centering bell 24 may he slid down until the tapered portion rests on the edge of the bar. By pressing down firmly, this will align the punch centrally, as will be obvious. In other words, by placing the locating cone 24 over the end of the bar 23, location will be eifected on a horizontal plane. To locate on a vertical plane, you insert the centering punch into the sleeve 25 of the locating cone and then thrust the punch downwardly until you contact the bar. This will automatically align itself on a vertical plane concentrically with the bar. When your punch face lays flat on the face of the bar, you will then tighten the set screw 26 to hold the alignment of these two planes.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A combination transfering punch and locating center punch comprising, in combination, a center punch having a conical tip and an elongated reduced shank, an elongated cylindrical interchangeable member having a central longitudinal bore slidably receiving said shank therethrough, said member at one end having an enlarged bore adapted to receive therewithin said conical tip, a head member mounted upon the end of said shank remote from said conical tip, spring means for urging said head member in a direction away from said elongated cylindrical member comprising a coil spring sleeving said shank intermediate the end of said elongated cylindrical member and the inner end of said head member, and a hollow frusto conical member integrally formed at its smaller end with a hollow cylindrical sleeve adapted to slidably receive said elongated cylindrical member therethrough, said hollow cylindrical sleeve including set screw means for adjustably engaging said elongated cylindrical member to vary the position of said elongated cylindrical member with respect to said hollow conical member.
