The purpose of this invention is to improve the construction of lubricating polish rods used in pumping wells whereby washers of the packing glands around the rods are lubricated continuously and wherein wear developing in a rod is taken by a removable shell on the' rod.
With conventional polish rods that reciprocate through packing glands and the like, it is difficult to maintain lubrication on the parts with the result that the continuous rubbing action of the washers of packing glands wears polish rods of this type and as wear develops it is necessary to remove and replace the entire polish rod. With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates a comparatively thin shell calmped by a jam nut on the body of the polish rod whereby wear resulting from the rubbing action of the washers of the packing glands wears only the shell and with the shell readily removable and replaceable on the polish rod the body of the polish rod is adapted to be used indefinitely.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means whereby wearing portions of polish rods adapted to be connected to sucker rods of pumping equipment of well may be removed and replaced so that polish rods may be renewed without removing and replacing the entire body of the rod.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved polish rod for the connecting rod of a pumping well in which means is provided in the surface of a shell on the rod for carrying lubricant to washers of packing glands through which the polish rod operates.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a polish rod with a removable shell extended over wearing portions thereof in which the shell is adapted to be removed and replaced by the average mechanic.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved polish rod for pumping wells in which the rod is provided with a removable shell and in which the rod is of a simple and economical construction.

Referring now to the drawing, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improv'ed'selflubricating polish rod of this invention includes a shell 10 adapted to be positioned on a stem 11 extended from a mandrel 12, a jam nut 13 threaded on the stem, a threaded stud 14 extended from the mandrel, and a similar threaded stud 15 on the extended end of the jam nut 13.
As shown in the drawing, the body of the polish rod includes the mandrel 12, stem 11 and stud 14 and, as shown in Figure 2, the extended end of the stem 13 is provided with threads 16 on which the jam nut 13 is threaded. The end of the mandrel 12 from which the stem 11 extends is provided with an inwardly extended beveled surface 17 providing an annular groove 18 into which a beveled end 19 of the shell 10 extends, and with the end of the shell extended into the annular recess or groove, the part 19 of the shell is locked in position in the groove 18 with the jam nut 13. A split-spring lock washer 20 is positioned between the jam nut and the upper end of the shell 10 and, as shown in Figure 1, the outer or peripheral surface of a flange 21 extended around the jam nut is provided with flat surfaces 22 to facilitate rotating the jam nut with a wrench or the like. A similar nut or flange, as indicated by the numeral 23, is provided between the mandrel 12 and stud 14, the periphery of the flange being provided with flat surfaces 24 to facilitate gripping and turning the body of the polish rod with a wrench or the like.
The intermediate part of the shell 10 is provided with spaced annular grooves 25 and 26 and small recesses or pits 27, positioned between the grooves, which coact with the grooves to carry lubricant from the well string or casing in which the sucker rod is operating through the packing gland (not shown) in which the polish rod reciprocates whereby washers of the packing gland are lubricated as the device operates. With this means of supplying lubricant to the heavy leather washers that wear the surface of the polish rod, the wear on the shell 10 will be reduced to a With the parts designed and assembled as shown and described, the polish rod is connected to the upper end of the conventional sucker rod of a pumping well with the stud 14 extended from the end of the mandrel 12 threaded in the sucker rod and with the stud 15 extended from the jam nut 13 threaded in an upwardly extended extension whereby the pumping rod is adapted to be reciprocated with the polish rodincorporated therein.
