SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,393, dated June 12, 1883.'

My improvements consist, essentially, in a novel construction, form, and arrangement of and means for operating the bed and apron,
whereby is produced a machine in which the hats or other articles while being felted are alfrom while the felting operation continues, and it further consists in certain details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings.

A is a water box or tank. B is a horizontal shaitextending across and above said box or receptacle. This shaft B supports and operates the felting mechanisln, and is mounted in suitable fixed bearings in uprights C C, which are afxed to the sides of the tank A in any appropriate manner.

Into the upper parts of the said frames D, above the slots k, are fitted screws nl, which bear upon the boxes Z and support the frames D and the feltingbed F thereon, and which serve to adjust the said frames higher or lower and so adjust the distance between the said bed and the felting or`rubbing devices above it.

At one end of the machine, and at or near the bottom of the tank `A, are secured horizontal supports R R, which furnish bearings for the rotary drivi 11g-shaft T ofthe machine, on 8 5 which are four eccentrics, S S S S. The two eccentrics S S are set in the opposite direc tion to those S SC The ends of the sectorframes D D and O O which are nearest to the eccentrics are extended so as to form arms U 9o U and U U, t-he arms U U of the frames D D being connected to the eccentrics S SY by the eccentric-rods V V, and the arms U U of the frames O O being connected to the eccenries S S by the eccentric-rods V V. The eccentrics give an oscillating motion to the bed F and the series of rollers P and apron Q, and as the said eccentrics are set in opposite direc. tions while the bed F is moving in one direction the rollers P and apron Q, will move in Ioo the opposite direction.
On one end of the shaft T is keyed the driving-wheel XV, and upon the other end is keyed a pulley, X. Upon the end of the shaft B, and upon the same side of the machine as the pulley X, is keyed another pulley, Y, and these two pulleys X and Y are connected by an endless belt, Z. Upon the shaft B, between the `frames l) and O, is keyed another pulley, y, which is connected by a belt, z, with still another pulley, e", keyed to the -journal of one of the end rollers, l), outside of the frame O. By means ot' the driving-shaft T and the pulleys and belts above named a continuous motion is imparted to the apron Q. By the oscillating movements of thebed F and apron Q the hats or other articles which are placed upon the bed Fat one end of the machine will` be rubbed and felted, while by the continuous movement of the apron Q. they will be carried from the end oi' the bed where they are introduced to the other end and thence delivered. The oseillating' movement of the bed and its invertedarc form also cause the hats or other articles to be alternat-ely dipped in and taken out ot' th'e water in the box or tank A, which is advantageous to the felting operation.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a feltingdnachine, of a bed and an endless apron the adjacent portions of which are oi' arc or curved form, and frames for supporting or carrying' said bed and apron suspended from and capable of oscillating, u ion or about 'a common shaft, substantially as herein specified.
2. The combination of the two oscillating frames, one carrying a felting-bed and the other an endless apron and rollers, and both suspended from the same shaft or axle, abox or trough for containing water, in which the 'said bed and apron may work, and means for imparting` to the said frames oscillating movements in opposite directions, the one to the other, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination, with the oscillating` frame whi ch supports the apron and its rollers, of a rotary shait upon which the said :frame oscillates, a pulley onthe said shaft, a pulley on one of the rollers within the apron, and a belt running` on said pulleys for transmitting motion from the said shaft tothe said apron, substantially as herein described.
4t. The combination, with the shaft upon which thcoscillating` frame of the felting-bed and theoscillatiug frame of the felting-apron and rollers are both suspended, of boxes iitted to the said shaft and to slots in one of said frames, and adiusting-screws between the said boxes and the said frame for adjusting` the said frame toregulate the space between said apron and bed, substantially as herein described.
