Description

(No Model.)
F. SGHAUMAN;
PERMANENT WAYTOR RAILWAYS.
280. Patented June 12, 1883.
Illllnll llll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIDOLF SCHAUMAN, OF LANDSKRONA, SWEDEN.
PERMANENT WAY FOR RAILWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 279,280, dated June 12, 1883.
' Application iled September 22, 1882. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern: o
Be it known that I, FRIDOLF SCHAUMAN, of Landskrona, in the Kingdom of Sweden, but at present residing at 30 Finsbury Pavement, London, E. C. England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permanent Ways for Railways, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to obtain a durable, elastic, and safe permanent way for railways 5 and the invention consists of sleepers made of stone or concrete, and provided with washer-plates, which are l composed or prepared cork, and interposed as an elastic medium between the rails and the sleepers, the cork washer-plates being bolted in suitable manner to the sleepers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 represent a vertical transverse section and a plan of my improved permanent way for railroads. Figs. 3 and 4 are a vertical transverse section and a plan of a modified construction of the same. Figs. 5 and are plans, showing different forms of sleepers, and Fig. 7 is a vertical transverse section of the perlnanent way shown in Fig. 6.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
The stone or concrete sleepers c are laid in the ballast of the road, and are each furnished with four bored or cast.boltholes, through whichpass wrought-ironbolts c c, having heads at their lower ends and nuts e at their threaded upper ends. rIhe compressed or prepared cork washer-plates b are placed at or near the edges of the stone or concrete sleepers a, and so that the aforesaid bolts c pass also through holes formed in them corresponding to the holes in the said sleepers. The base of the rails f are placed directly on the compressed or prepared cork washer-plates b and secured thereto and to the sleepers by'spring clipplates d, of suitable form and dimensions, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The spring clipplates d bear on the base of the rail, while their other ends bear on the compressed or prepared cork plates b. Ihe bolts c pass through holes in the spring clip-plates d, the nuts e bearing upon the said spring clip-plates so as to hold the rails f, the cork washer-plates b, and the stone or concrete sleepers a jointly together.
In case reversible rails are used, they are secured by wedges into chairs d', which are placed on the cork washenplates, the chairs, washer-plate, and sleeper being connected by bolts and nuts, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
. The desired width between the rails is secured by transverse iron tie-rods. By reducing or increasing the thickness of the compressed or prepared cork washer plates b, the road can readily be adjusted.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improvement in permanent ways for railroads, consisting of stone or concrete sleepers a, provided with bolt-holes, in combination with compressedcork washer-plates b, rails f, spring clip-plates d, bolts c, and nuts e, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses. l
FRIDOLF SGHAUMAN.
