INVENTOR ATTORNEYS United States Patent O REMINDING DEVICE George Bozich, Monroe, Mich. Application February 8, 1955, Serial No. 486,835
2 Claims. (Cl. 40-86) This invention relates to a reminding or prompting device Which is to be carried :and used more particularly by public speakers to remind them of important points to be emphasized during their speeches and to replace prompting cards commonly used by speakers.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and novel features thereof defined in the appended claims.
Another object of the invention is to provide 'a device on which notations may be written as a means for reminding a shopper of important items to be purchased.
In the drawings:
Figure l is la perspective View of a reminding device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the reminding device taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of my reminding device perpendicular to that in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of my invention taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section of my reminding device taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary section, partly broken away. t
He'retofore it has been customary to provide `a form of prompting means, by speakers, so that the line of thought may be carried out to the best advantage, and without interruption. The prompting or reminding device ordinarily embodies one or more sets of cards or a personal prompter who is invisible to the television audience.
The prompting device of my invention embodies an apparatus adapted to be carried in the hands of a person and script will appear according to the actuation of the device by the person using such prompter.
The reminding device 10 is in a casing 11 having a pair of housing sections 12 and 14 fitted together on the outer side of a frame 15, which supports the inner working parts of the device.
The frame 15 includes a longitudinally extending flat side frame section 16 spaced from a parallel similar at side frame section 17 on the other side.
There is provided an intermediate frame section 18 between the outer side sections 16 and 17 extending longitudinally of the Idevice 10, there being a iiat transverse frame connecting section 19 connected at its opposite side edges to the outer side frame sections 16 and 17 and disposed on the opposite sides of the intermediate frame section 18.
A pair of transversely extending shafts 20 are carried by the outer ends of one of the outer frame sections and is rotatable between that one outer frame section and the intermediate frame section 18 as clearly notable in the drawings.
A spool 21 is carried by each of the shafts 20 within the reminding device 10 on which a web 22 of flexible material or reel may be connected and reeled from one of the `2,792,653 Patented May 21, 1957 spools to the other during the operation of the reminding device 1,0.
There is a ratchet Wheel 24 fixed to the outer end of each of the shafts 20 between the intermediate frame sections 18 and the flat side frame member 16, as clearly notable in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Each ratchet wheel 24 is provided with ratchet type gear teeth thereon engageable with an end of a pawl 25 specifically shown in the drawings. Each pawl 25 is provided with a pawl lever 26 interiorly of the device which is used to constantly urge each of the pawls 25 into engagement with its respective ratchet wheel 24 so that any one of the spools 21 may be rotated for reeling thereon, the web 22 which is fed from the spool at an end of the reminding device.
Each of the spools is to be rotated by the fingers of the user affecting the rotation of a selected ratchet wheel 24, with its respective shaft and spool, by engaging the outer end of the lever 30 which extends outwardly from the reminding device 10.
As the reel 22 is wound on one of the spools 21 it is held in that selected position by a roller 28, between the roller supporting arms 29, which are engageable at their ends wit-h the ends of the pawl lever 26 outwardly of the intermediate frame section 18 and between the spools 21.
The pawls are held in their engagement with their respective ratchet wheels 24 by the coil spring 27 which is connected at its ends to said pawl -arms 26 :at the opposite ends of the reminding device 10.
As the housing 11 is sectional in configuration there is provided :a `sectional window housing 34 on one side of the reminding device, the housing section 12 being provided wit-h a segmental window opening 35, the other housing section 14 having a segmental window opening which aligns with opening 35 in providing the sight window of the device through which the web of the device can be easily viewed by the person using such reminding device.
A rod 37 is extended through a coiled spring 31 for urging the rollers into contact with the reel, this spring being engageable rat the ends thereof with the roller supporting arms 29. In other words, the roller supporting arm intersects the spring 31, adjacent the ends thereof, so that the same coil spring 31 will continually urge both of the pawls 25 longitudinally of the device 10.
In the use and operation of the reminding device described above, the reminding device is to be supported in the hands of a person using such device and the web, of the reels 21 is inscribed with the words, or act, which the person using this device intends to do. During the normal use of such device the web is to be trained over the transverse frame section 19 so that the inscription thereon may be readily viewed by the holder through the window formed by the window sections of the sectional casing 11.
While the specific :details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A reminding device comprising a frame formed of a pair of outer plates, a transverse plate securing said plates together in spaced parallel relation, an intermediate plate disposed adjacent one of said pair of plates, a pair of drum shafts journaled in said intermediate and the other of said outer plates, a ratchet fixed on each shaft between said one outer plate and said intermediate plate, a drum fixed on each shaft, a pawl lever loose on each shaft between said ratchet and said intermediate plate, a pawl pivotally carried by each lever selectively engageable with said ratchet, a pair of opposed links pivotally se- 2,79%,653 3 cured at their outer ends to said pawls, acontractile spring 2. A reminding device as set forth in claim 1 wherein secured to the opposed ends of said links, a web wound said cover is formed of complementary cover sections on both of said drums and engaging over the outer side removably tclescoping over said frame. or said transverse plate, a stop lng carried by each link engageable with the outer edges of said transverseplate 5 References Cited in the me of this patent to normally hold said pawls in inoperative position, a UNITED STATES PATENTS finger piece on each lever, outward swinging of a lever eecting engagement of the pawl carried thereby with an 887,579 Bllllngs May 12, 1908 `associated ratchet, spring means holding the web tight 1,073,153 MC'InnlS Sept. 16, 1913 on said drums, and a cover encompassing said frame, said 10 1,921,103 Smlth Aug. 8, 1933 cover having a window exposing that portion of said web 2,591,844 Macrlpo Apr. 8, 1952 overlying said transverse plate.
