UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. KIMBALL, OF LEADVILLE, COLORADO.
CUT-OFF-VALVE GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,253, dated June 12, 1883.
I Application filed February 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Leadville, in the county of Lake and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Cut-Off-Valve Gear for Steam-Engines; and I' do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
My invention has for its object to work a cut-off by means of a pendulum, whereby the '20 engineshall make the same number of revolutions each minute, and which I will now proceed to describe.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the steam-cylinder; B, the valve-chamber; C, the piston-rod. D is a standard attached to the frame of the engine. E is a box upon the top of the standard D, provided with a removable top, E, secured by means of screws. F is a bolt or pin working in said box E, to one end 0 of which pin is secured the end a of the arm G. H is the eccentric-rod; I, the main-valve rod. The lower end, b, of the arm G is secured to the end of the eccentric-rod, where it connects with the main-valve rod by means of a 3 5 bolt, 0. Attached to the arm G, just below the bolt or pin F, is a bolt, d, and swinging upon this bolt is the pendulum K, having the ball 6 and slot f. L is the cutoff-valve rod, secured at one end to the bolt or pin 9, said pin 9 work- 0 ing in the slot f .of the pendulum K.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
WVhen the engine is started, the arm G, being connected with the eccentric-rod H, is swung back and forward, and the pin d on said arm, and on which pin is hung the pendulum K, moves with said arm. The tendency of the ball a is to seek the center of gravity under said pin, and asthe same changes its position the pendulum is caused to swing back and forward, the ball 0 being of sufficient weight to force the -cut-off-valve rod in and out, and thus impart a regular reciprocating motion to said rod.
' Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. Thependulum K and means for operating said pendulum, in combination with a cut-oil'- valve rod connected with and driven by said pendulum K, whereby the cut-off is given a regular reciprocating motion, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the standard D, box E, pin F, arm G, bolt d, pendulum K, cut-off rod L, and bolt g, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described. r
3. The combination of the standard D, box E, pin F, arm G, eccentrierod H, bolt 0, pendulum K, bolt (1, cut-off rod L, and bolt 9, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described. v
4. The combination of the standard D, box E, pinF, arm G, eccentric-rod H, bolt 0, pendulum K, having the slot f, bolt (1, cut-off rod L, and bolt 9, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. KIMBALL.
