SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 279,030, dated June 5, i883.
' Application filed March Iss3. (Nonmdeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. A. SMEAD, of Tioga,
in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsyl vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring-Tanks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form partof this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in measuring-tanks; and itconsists, first, in the combination of the cover of the tank, the pump which is placed inside of the tank, thepiston, the piston-rod, and extension formed upon the top of the cover, and a cylinder which works inside of the cover and fits inside of the top of the pump, whereby all splashing orworking of the oil or other liquid being measured prevented from working through the cover;
second, the combination of the pump and valve for closing its lower end, an L-shaped slot in the upper portion of the tank, and a rod connected to the valve and provided with a bend, so as to catch in the upper part of the slot and hold the valve against the lower end of the 'pump.

A represents a tank of any desired shape or size, and which has attached to its outer side, at any convenient point, a gage-tube for showing both the height and the quantity of oil in the tank.
The cover C fits tightly inside of the top of the tank, and has the covered hole or opening 1), through which oil may be poiu'ed into the tank, and through which the operator can look for the purpose of seeing whether or not the measures are filled. Pivoted upon the center of this cover is the pump-handle E, which has attached directly to it the cylinder I, which is covered at. its upper end, but open at its lower one. This cylinder extends downward through the extension D, which is formed upon the top of the cover just over the pump. This cylinder, attached to the pump-handle, is provided with a flange at its top, so as to form a tight joint with the top of the extension, and serves to prevent any splashing of the oil or other liquid that is being pumped from working through the cover. This eylindcr plays up and down with the handle, the same as the piston-rod H. The pump is placed inside of thetank, at one side, and is provided with a .valve at any suitable point, and the piston is provided with another. The lower end of the pump tube or cylinder is reduced in size, and hinged or otherwise loosely secured to itslower end is the valve J, which is connected to the rod L, which has the bend N near its upper end. hen this valve raised upward against the lower end ofthe pump-tube, the fiow of oil. through the pump is stopped; but when the valve is dropped downward the oil can be freely pumped, and the oil or other liquid can be freely run into the cylinder by means of the siphonic tube 0. The lower end of this siphonic tube is con nected with the pump below its valve. In order to keep this valve closed, there is made an L-shaped slot, P, through the side of the tank,
near its upper edge, and through this slot the valvrod is made to pass. \Vhen the bent portion N of this rod is made to catch in the horizontal part of the slot, the valve is held tightly against the lower end of the pump tube or cylinder. In order to open the valve, the rod has to be moved laterally until the bent portion comes over the horizontal part of the slot, and then the rod drops from its own gravity.
In order to economize space and material, and thus greatly cheapen the cost of these tanks, the measures are placed one inside of the other. any desired number of faucets, S, attached to it, extending from the top downward, while the outer measure, T, will only have one or more faucets attached to it at or near its lower end.
All of these faucets are connected at their outer ends with a tube, V, which has its lower end so shaped as to allow vessels with very small mouths to be filled directly from the tank. In operating the pump the central or inner measure is first filled, and then the overflow fills the outer one. here a large quantity of oil is wanted, the lower faucets connected with the outer measure 'will be used.
Having thus described my invention, 1' claim- 1. The combination of the cover having an extension formed upon its top, a pump-handle having connected to it both the cylinder and the piston-rod, and the pump, inside of the top of which the lower end of the piston tits, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the pump, the valve loosely connected to its lower end, and valverod provided with a bend, and a tank having 1 an L-shaped slot made through its side, substantially as specified.
3. A measuring-tank in which are combined two or more measures, which are placed one within the other, and which are connected to a filling-tube by means of pipes and cocks, the pump. for filling the measures, a valve for closing the lower end of the pump, and a bent rod connected to the valve, a slotted case or frame, A, and having an extension on itstop, and apiston-rod having a cylinder, F, connect-ed thereto, substantially as specified.
