Description

(No ModeL) E. B. HARTWELL.
NECK YOKB.
Patented June 5, 1883.
I No. 2'78,Q5Z.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE B. HARTWELL, OF DELPHOS, OHIO.
NECK-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,952, dated June 5, 1883.
Application filed January 4, 1883. (No model.)
To. all whom it may concern):
Be it known that I, E. B. HARTWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident at Delphos, in the county of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yoke Centers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, andto letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, showing a front view. Fig. 2 is also a front view, and shows the leather bearing in place. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through line a? m of Fig. l.
This invention has relation to neck-yokes; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly claimed.
In the annexed drawings, the letter a designates the neck-yoke, on the middle portion of which is seated the metallic center '12, which is usually made of malleable iron. This center consists of a short bar, 0, having at each end a pair of curved arms, (I, forming a circular bearing, which is designed to clasp the neckyoke circumferentially, with exception of a small interval between the ends of the arms on the upper surface of the yoke, as indicated at e. The circular end bearings are offset from the bar bearing a, on which the leather bear ing g is placed, in order to provide room for the application of the leather g. In the ends of the arms cl are made perforations h, through which small screws k are driven into the neck yoke, holding the center in place.
This center is easily applied to neck-yokes of different sizes, and its curved arms or branches can'be closed on the middle or body of the yoke tightly, so that it forms a very firm attachment and when a yoke is broken the center can be easily detached andfitted to a new yoke-bar.
A pole-ring having a clasp-arm which is suitably curved to receive and embrace the under central portion of the neck-yoke has been combined with a separate curved clasp arm for the upper central portion of the neckyoke and semi-bearings and rivets for securing the separate clasps to the neck-yoke prior to my invention. A single-tree hook and clip, the latter having lateral aligned perforations to register with a perforation in the singletree to receive a nut-bolt and compress the wings of the clip against the single-tree, are also old; and neither of these constructions is broadly claimed herein.
Having described this invention, what I- claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The neck-yoke center consisting of the bar 0, having the pairs of circularly-curved arms d at each end thereof, forming circular offsetbearings, said arms having their ends separated at e and perforated for the reception of screws, as specified. a
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of witnesses.
EUGENE B. HARTWELL.
