Description

April 16, 1957 A. BRANDT 2,788,854
HAND PUNCH Filed Aug. 31, 1955 AXEL H. BRA/vor,
his Attorney.
United States Patent Oliice 2,788,854 Patented Apr. 16, 1957 HAND PUNCH Axel H. Brandt, Virginia, Minn., assignor to United States Steei Corporation, a corporation of New Jersey Application August 31, 1955, Serial No. 531,721
4 Claims. (Cl. 164-96) This invention relates to an improved hand punch for perforating heavy material, such as rubber belting.
An object yof the invention is to provide an improved hand punch which facilitates insertion and removal of the work, Ias well as accurately positioning and perforating it.
A further object is to provide a hand punch in which both the cutter and its guide can be moved out of the way to facilitate inserting and removing the work and both are voperated by a single lever motion.
'In 'accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided improved details of structure, a preferred Iform of which is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of a punch constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the punch; and
-Figure 3 is a vertical section on line III-III of Figure 1.
My punch comprises a base 10, to the upper face of which are aixed a pair yof upstanding spaced apar-t hinge plates 12. IThe base also contains an opening 13 over which a die plate 14 is mounted in a transverse groove 15. An operating lever 16 is tted between the hinge plates 12 and pivoted thereto on a bolt 17. Cutter guide 'bars 18 also are pivotally mounted on the bolt 17 on opposite sides of the hinge plates and are rigidly connected to each other by a bolt 19 and spacer 20 located adjacent the other end. The guide bars carry legs 21 adapted to rest on the base to limit their downward movement. A cutter 22 is mounted between the guide bars 18 and at its lower end carries a blade 23 which is adapted to extend through the die plate 14 and the opening 13 in the base 10. The upper portion yof the cutter is recessed to receive the operating lever 16. The upper edge of this lever carries an integral cam 24, and the cutter has a cooperating cam follower 25. Preferably -the base 10 carries upstanding pins 26 spaced from the die plate 14 for positioning the Work.
In operation, the lever 16 is raised about its pivot 17 to lift the cutter 22 and cutter guide bars 18 clear of the base 10 and thus enable the work to be inserted without interference. As the lever is raised from the position shown in lFigures 2 and 3, the cam 24 acts on the -follower 25 to raise the cutter 22 in a straight line vertically with the guide bars 18 at first remaining stationary. After the blade 23 on the cutter clears the die plate 14, the cam rides ott its follower. Relative movement between the cutter and guide bars thereupon ceases, and on continued movement of '3.1 levl the guide 'bars commence to' move therewith. When the lever, cutter and guide bars are fully out of the way, the work is positioned on the base against the pins 26. The lever is -then returned to its previous position to return the guide bars 18 and cutter 22 and forced downwardly to perforate the Work.
From t-he foregoing description it is seen that my invention affords a simple hand punch for quickly and easily perforating heavy material. A single motion of the `operating lever clears the base to enable Ithe Work to be inserted without interference. A single return motion both restores the parts t-o an operative position and perforates the work.
While I have shown and described only a single embodiment of my invention, it is apparent that modications may arise. Therefore, l do not wish to be limited to Vthe disclosure set forth but only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A hand punch comprising a base, a die plate mounted lon said base, an operating lever and a cutter guide pivoted at a common point with respect to said base, a cutter movable mounted in said guide and having a blade cooperable with said die, and cooperating means on said lever and cutter for raising the cutter in a straight line on pivotal movement of said lever away from said base with said guide at rst remaining stationary, and then raising both the cutter and guide on continued pivotal movement of said lever.
2. A hand punch comprising a base, a die plate mounted on said base, -an operating lever and a cutter guide pivoted at a common point with respect to said base, a cutter movably mounted in said guide and having a blade cooperable with said die and a recess receiv` ing said lever, and cooperating cam means on said lever aud cutter within said recess for raising the cutter in a straight line on pivotal movement of said lever away from said base with said guide at lirst remaining stationary, and :then raising both said cutter and said guide on continued pivotal movement of said lever.
3. A hand punch comprising a base, a die plate mounted on -said base, a pair of upstanding spaced apar-t -hinge plates fixed to said base, an operating lever pivotally mounted between said hinge plates, a pair of cutter guide bars pivotally mounted on opposite sides of said hinge plates and rigidly iixed to each other, a cutter movably mounted between said bars and having a blade cooperable with said die anda recess receiving said lever, and cooperating cam means on said lever and cutter within said recess for raising the cutter in a straight line on pivotal movement of said lever away from said base with said bars at first remaining stationary, and then raising both said cutter and said bars on continued movement of said lever.
4. A punch as defined in claim 3 in which said cam lmeans includes an integral cam projecting from the upper edge of said lever and a cam follower fixed to said eutter above said cam.
