EDGE STRIP CONTROL IN CIRCULAR KNIFE EDGING sHEARs Filed July 26, 1954 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVE N 70195 1/09 8 Lfan ge United States Patent EDGE STRIP CONTROL IN CIRCULAR KNIFE EDGING SHEARS Josef Wurm, Dusseldorf-Budeticb, and Georg Vogelfiinger, Dusseldorf, Germany, assignors to Schloeinanu Aktiengesellschaft, Dusseldorf, Germany Application July 26, 1954, Serial No. 445,874
Claims priority, application Germany July 27, 1953 4 Claims. (Cl. 164-60) It is known that when edging sheets by means of circular knife shears, the waste strip tends to twist. Therefore the edge strip is controlled so that cutting up the strip into transportable pieces by the hack shears arranged with the circular knife shears ofiers no difiiculty.
The extent to which the edge strips twist depends on the one hand on the material of which the sheets to be edged are made and on the other hand on their thickness.
The object of the invention is to procure a method of controlling the edge strip which can be adjusted to the conditions prevailing at any time, whilst the guiding operation is carried out as smoothly as possible.
The invention consists in a method of control comprising two guiding cheeks adjustable in respect of their distance from each other and their inclination, determining the direction of emergence of the edge strip.
This is achieved by means of a further feature of the invention, the guiding cheeks being tiltably fitted around axles Whose distance from each other can be adjusted.
The axles carrying the guiding checks are made hollow and the knife shafts are passed through the hollow axles.
A further feature of the invention is a particularly appropriate construction in which at least one of the axles carrying the guiding cheeks is provided with a cylindrical eccentric boss around whose spindle the axle is turnably fitted into the shears support. The axle may also be drilled concentrically to its eccentric boss, the eccentric bearing bush of the knife shaft being turnably fitted into this aperture.
The accompanying drawing shows an example of execution of the invention, Figure 1 being a cross section and Figure 2 a side view.
The knife shafts 1 are shown with knives 2 fitted to them. The sheet to be edged is marked 3 and the strip cut off by the knife 2 is marked 4.
Guiding cheeks 5 and 6 serve to control the edge strip 4. The guiding check 5 is provided with an eye 7 and the guiding check 6 with an eye 8. The cheeks 5 and 6 with the eyes 7 and are tiltably fitted to hollow axles. Each of the hollow axles 9 are provided with a cylindrical boss 10 arranged eccentrically to their outside diameter, being rotatably fitted in their turn into holes 11 of the shears support. When the axles 9 rotate around the cylindrical bosses 10, they change their distance from each other due to their eccentricity in respect of the bosses 10. Therefore the space between the guiding checks 5 and 6 also changes; Whereas the inclination of the guiding cheeks 5 and 6 changes when they are tilted around the axles 9.
The eyes 7 and 8 of the guiding checks 5 and 6 are provided with flanges 12. In the flanges 12 there are a number of longitudinal apertures 13 to take screw bolts 14, by means of which the inclined position of the guide cheeks 5 and 6 can be fixed. The axles 9 are each provided with a collar on which the flanges 12 rest. On tightening up the screws 14 the axles 9 are also secured against turning.
The axles 9 are drilled concentrically to the bosses 10. The eccentric bushes 16 for bearings 17 of knife shafts are turnably fitted into these apertures; due to their rotation the knife shafts 1 with their knives 2 can be adjusted. The rotation of the hollow axles 9 does not therefore affect adjustment of the knife shafts 1.
The strip edge 4 may be led, after leaving the guiding cheeks 5, 6 for example, to a set of rolls 18. The rolls 1% of at least one row are adjustable vertically to the direction of movement of strip and supported in a turnable bearing 19 so they are adjustable like the guiding checks 5, 6.
We claim:
1. In a shearing machine having a shears support, knife shafts rotatably mounted therein, and circular knives on the knife shafts for trimming the edges of metal sheets, means controlling the path of travel of the severed edge strips, comprising: upper and lower axles carried by the shears support, an upper guiding cheek mounted about the upper axle, a lower guiding cheek mounted, adjacent to and independently of the upper guiding cheek, about the lower axle, each of the guiding cheeks being tiltable through a small angle about the axle on which it is mounted, and at least one eccentric bearing rotatable relatively to one of the axles to enable the distance between the guiding cheeks to be varied.
2. Means controlling the severed edge strips in circular-knife shears as claimed in claim 1, wherein the axles are made hollow, and the knife shafts extend through the hollow axles.
3. In a shearing machine having a shears support, knife shafts rotatably mounted therein, and circular knives on the knife shafts for trimming the edges of metal sheets, means controlling the path of travel of the severed edge strips, comprising: upper and lower hollow axles, each including a cylindrical boss turnably mounted in the shears support and a spindle projecting therefrom, the spindle being eccentric in relation to the boss, upper and lower guiding cheeks adjacent to one another, each including an eye turnably mounted upon the spindle of one of the axles so that the inclination of the checks can be slightly varied, means for rotating the hollow axles and thereby varying the distance apart of the guiding cheeks, and means for clamping the hollow axles and the guiding cheeks in their adjusted positions.
4. In a shearing machine having a shears support, knife shafts rotatably mounted therein, and circular knives on the knife shafts for trimming the edges of metal sheets, means controlling the path of travel of the severed edge strips, comprising: upper and lower hollow axles, each including a cylindrical boss turnably mounted in the shears support and a spindle projecting therefrom, the spindle being eccentric in relation to the boss, upper and lower guiding cheeks adjacent to one another, each including an eye turnably mounted upon the spindle of one of the axles so that the inclination of the cheeks can be slightly varied independently of one another, the axles being bore concentrically with their cylindrical bosses, and the knife shafts extending through these hollow axles, and the machine further comprising eccentric bearing bushes turnably fitted between the knife shafts and the hollow axles.
