Description

(N o Model.) .0. E. BALDWIN.
APPARATUS FOR TAKING PROOF. N0 278,848. Patented June 5,1883.
} WITNESSES: A INVENTOR WW2? JMJ m ATTOI ENEY I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. BALDWIN, OF- NEWV YORK, N. Y. ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO CORNELIUS BEARD, OF SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR TAKING PROOF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,848, dated J'une 5, 1883. Application filed January 22, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States of North America, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Taking Proof, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to savetimeand labor in taking proof from type forms by providing a portable device for that purpose.
The invention consists of a device composed of two rollers of unlike characters and func tions, held apart and parallel to each other by a portable handle or frame, so that each one is capable of independent revolution. One of said rollers is an inking-roller, composed of or covered with the composition ordinarily used for printers inking-rollers, and the other roller is designed for'pressing the proof-sheet upon the form, and is constructed preferably of metal covered with felt or other suitable elastic material.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation of the same 011 line at 00, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the device, consisting of a spindle, a, having secured on each end and in line therewith a handle, I) 0, provided with a rose or plate, 0 c, as shown. On one side of the spindle a a cylinder, B, preferably of metal, covered with a sleeve or covering, (Z, of felt or other elastic material, is held so that it may revolve by spindles f f, that journal it in the opposite roses or plates 0 c. On the opposite side of the spindle a a cylinder, 0, covered with ordinary inking-roller composition, 9, is j ournaled, so as to revolve parallel with the cylinder B between the roses or plates 0 c, by spindles h h. Projecting downward from the roses or plates 0 c are feetk k, that serve to support the device in an upright position when not in use, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
When it is desired to take proof by means of this device the cylinder or roller 0 is inked in the usual manner and then run over the form, the operator taking hold of the handles 1) b and applying the roller O with suitable pressure for properly inking the type. Then.
the sheet on which proof is to be taken is laid upon the form, and the pressing roller or cylinder B is run over the back of said sheet by the operator, a very moderate pressure sufficing to insure perfect prooffi.
WVith this device proof can be taken on the standing-rack or stone, and much time be thereby saved in going to and from the proofpress and by its use a small order of circulars, cards, &c., can be printed without the trouble of locking upa form and making ready on a press. With this, too, dead matter can be proofed in any position in which it may be standing, and any inside matter of any size of form can also be proofed without the use of a covered planer and mallet, as is now the case. Turtles and circular forms, now used in rotary presses, can be proofed with this device as easily as flat forms can be. There are numerous other uses to which the device can be advantageously applied, which will readily occur to the mind .of any practical printer.
I do not confine myself to the construction of the device precisely as herein shown and described, for the feet It is may be dispensed with and a separate independent holder or support be provided, and the form of the handle or frame may be modified without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, an apparatus for taking proof, constructed.- substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of an inking-roller and an elastic pressingroller, held in a portable handle or frame apart and parallel with each other, so as to be free to revolve independently of each other, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the portable frame A, provided with the legs is k, of the pressing cylinder or roller B and inking cylinder or roller 0, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of January, 1883.
CHARLES E. BALDWIN.
