HOISTING MAGHINE. N0. 278,821. PatentedJune 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
ROBERT REID, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HO!STING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICA'IION forming pa.rt of Letters Patent N0. 278,821, dated June 5, 1883.
. Applicatir'm filed February 5, 188.3. (N model.)
T0 all w7wm ib may concrn:
Be 1't known that I, ROBERT REID, of the city 0f Philaclelphia, eonnty 0f Philadelp'hia, an(l Stat6 0f Pennsylvania, l1ave invented an Improvement in Hoisting-llaehines, 0f which the following is a specification.
My invention l1as referenee t0 hoisting-machines in general, but more particularly t0 that dass of such clevices whieh a1e teehnically known as portable hoisting-maehines ancl it consists in gearing, combined with lifting and band chain wheels and bearings 0f peeuliar eonstrnction, whereby tl1e machine is prevented f10111 1unning down, an(l in many details 0f constrnction, all 0f which a1e fully set f01t11 in alle following specification, and sh0wn in the aceompanying drawings, wln'ch f01n1 part thereof.
Heretofore it 11as been enstomary to rotate the lifting-chain Wl1 eel by means 0f a W01111 and worm-wheel. The bearing-snrfaee between tl1e two being s1nall, the wear is great, tl1e speecl is slow, ancl the wenn should run' in 0il. By 1ny constrnction the cost is greatly lessened, as tl1e worm-wheel is clispensed with, the gearing inay 1u11 comparatively clry, Will not 1un (W11, and'the frietion neeessary t0 prment said 1unning Clown is automatically inereased 01 tlecreased witl1 the vary1'ng weights 0f tl1e different loacls snpported. Greatersimplieity is atcained, and the clevice as a whole is 110t es liable t0 get out of Order 01 wem 0111- so soon as those in whieh tl1e wenn is used.
In tl1e drawings, Figure l is a side elewxtion of my improved hoisting-maehine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation 0'f szune, With art in seetion. Fig. 3 is a side elevation 0f tl1e lifting-chain gnide t0 keep the ehain in the groovein the chain-wheel and F1'g. 4 1's a plan view of the hand-elmin gnicle, Wl1i0h is adaptecl t0 keep the D(ESS hancl-ehain in the groove 0f the chain-wheel 0ver whieh it ums.
A A are frame-plates secured together at the botto1n by stay E, in the middle by sl1aft B, upon whicl1 the lifting-ehain wheel O is j 0111- naled, and a1e provicled at the cop with bearing eyes 01 holes A.
The chain-wheel O may be made in any desired manner, bnt I prefer it t0 havethe cl1aingroove bet-ween two spur-wheels, D D, cast integral therewith 01 otherwisie secured the1eto.
H is the supportinghook, and is pivoted t0 These plates F and A zne hinged toge'ther by the journals I, having flanges i 011 their inner sides, as shown.
Seenrecl to diese j0u111als the pinion K, which latter is located betwveen 1;he journa-ls 1 and meshes with the spur-wheels D. The outer encl 0f fl1e slmft J is seeuretl t0 the hancl-chain wheel L, 0ve1 whieh the ehain R travels, and is preVented f101n getting 0ff said wheel by gnide N, whiel1 fits ehe flange 0f seid elmin-wheel L, and is supportecl and 02m- 1ied by an extension, f, [0 0ne 0f the plates F,
lt 1's evident that the journals I und sl1aft J 1nay be made solid, 01 these 1nay be made integral With the pinion K. 'Ilxe lifting el1ain P passes over tl1e ehain-wheel C, and is p1e vented frombecoming displaeed bythe enrved guide M, having groove lWI t0 receive tl1e line 0f n1etal fonnecl by tl1e extending links, and an eye 01 bearing, m, \\*hieh.eneircles the pin i0n K 01 its sl1aft ancl is prevented f10n1 lat eral displaeement by the spur-wheels D.
The Operation is as follows: The l0ad being attaehecl t0 -the chain P, tl1e frzune A and ehainwheel C will naturally swing t0 0ne side, as in(licatecl in Fig. l, except ahnt in praetice t-l1e chain P wonld never pass a vertieal line through the snpporting-hook H 01 shaft J. Tlie plates A being hingecl t0 plates F, tl1e frietion (lue to the snpp01t 0'f tl1e load comes is alle shaft J of upon the la1ge jonrnals I, and which is snffieient [0 prevent the 1unning clow n 0f the ma chine with the heaviest l0acl 1't is adapted to supp 01t. As the l0a d "2Ul es in weight the frzune- 021,11yi11g chain-wheel (l vmies f101n a vertical p0sition t0 an angula1 one, irs pivotal p0int being at J, and the an1ount 0f frietion also va- 1ies. In the sznne ratio the power necessary t0 be exerted t0 reise 01 l0wer tl1e loadis proportional t0 the sa1ne. Somewlmt tl1e same effeet woulcl be attained if tl1e frame-plates A and F we1*e made integral; bnt I p1efe1 l1inging them,as shown. By this construction of hoist great speed in mising 01 lowering loads is attainecl, as it is possible t0 vary the ratio between the spur-wheels D and pinion K within large limits; 01 if clesirecl, intennedite gemring may be nsecl t0 inerease tl1e speed.
I do 110t limit myself t0 the construetion ing-chain wheel furnished with 0ne 017 111017espur-wheels, in combination with a pinion t0 rotate said chuinwheel, a shaft t0 rotate said pinion having journals 0f ]arger diameter 0112m the said pinion, substantially as und f0r the purpose speeified.
