To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, CLAUDE HME, of Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Salt-Grainers; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for the manufacture of salt by steam-evaporation in what are ordinarily termed salt-grainers, by means of whichthe salt, as fast as precipitated, is automatically removed from the grainer, and the brine is agitated by the devices employed for so removing the salt, such agitation greatly facilitating the process of precipitation.

A represents a grainer of the ordinary construction, except as hereinafter described, the `licor of which, at the discharge end, terminates in an upwardly-inclined plane. Uponeach inner side wall of the grainer there is seciued, in the usual way and above t-he level of the brine, a rail, B, upon the top of which travel the carrying-bars C, which are each made in two parts, which are jointed together, as shown at a. Secured to each of these bars, and coincident upon the opposite sides, are the hanging supports D, the lower ends of which nearly approach the iloor of the grainer. To the front of each pair of these bars is pivotally secured the hoes e, the length of which corresponds to the width of the floor of the grainer. These hoes are so attached to the pendent arms that in the forward reciprocation toward the inclined end of the grainer the hoes will be in a vertical position, resting against the front faces of their supports, and with their lower edges upon, or nearly so, the bottom of the grainer. l'n the reverse motion of the travel resistance of the brine will cause these hoes to assume a horizontal position until its portion of the travelis completed.
The object of jointing the carrying-bars C,
as described, is to enable the-front hoe to travel up the inclined plane x and force the salt over the front end of the grainer in the travel of the hoes.
F are a -pair of sprocket-wheels, one being secured near each end of the shaft G, the ends ofthe shaft being suitably journaled in boxes upon the opposite sides of the grainer, and to one of the projecting ends of this shaft, by means of a crank orV pulley, motion is imparted.
H are two grooved pulleys, although these latter may be sproclet-wheels, if preferred, secured upon the shaft I, journaled as described with reference to the shaft G. v
J are sprocket chains running over the sprocket-wheels and pulleys-one upon each side ofthe grainerand each one'of these chains has projecting on either side and coincident in both chains a small stud, I), upon each of which is placeda small roller. In the rotation of thesesprocket wheels and chains these frictionwheels upon the studs b come in contact with the forks cupon the ends ofthe rodsd, the opposite ends of which are secured to the risers K, the lower ends of which are rigidly secured to the carryingwbars, so that in the rotation of the chains the hoes will lic-withdrawn to the rearend of the grainer. In the further rotation of the chains these small studs b, with their wheels, will engage with projections o on the carrying-bars and force the hoes toward the front end ofthe grainer, carrying the deposited salt with them.
In order to prevent any uncertainty in this description, the front end of the grainer is that one wherein the iloor terminates in the upwardly-inclined plane. The upper edges of these hoes terminate in teeth f, which project to the surface of the brine, andthe intervals between the teeth in each of the hoes being coincident, they pass in their travel between the steam pipes-such as are usually found in grainers-so that when the hoes are in the act of withdrawing the salt their projecting teeth act as agitators of the surface ofthe brine. The front hoe and its connections differ from the othersin the series. This hoe is pivotedto a bar, D', which is provided with a friction roller, m, and is secured to the short arm of the carrying-frame C in front of the pivot a. The roller m rides up a track, M, of the same IOO incline as the front end of the grainer, and thus allows this front hoe to take the salt from the succeeding hoes and force it over the end of the grainer.
I am aware of Patent N o. 267 ,085, issued to e described, for imparting,` to said hoes a reciprocating motion, whereby the salt is forced in one direction automatically, and the ngers f automatically agitato the brine to assist granulation, as specied.
