3 Claims. (Cl. 16o- 47) The present invention relates to a head rod holder and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a head rod holder which comprises a horizontally extending supporting plate provided with an elongated socket formed integrally therewith, a hinge base-receiving trackway and a bolt headreceiving keyway. ln addition, there is provided novel brackets for the supporting plate. The socket is adapted to receive therein the pocketcd end of an awning in which a rod is provided.
With present low eave construction, it is impossible to provide a suicient slope to the awning to enable the same to be quickly drained and water is often forced by wind upwardly and over the head rod of the awning. The construction of the present invention avoids such leakage at the inner end of the awning.
lt is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet etiective and eflcient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for the prevention of leakage over the inner end portion of an awning mounted therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means whereby an awning mounted therein may be quickly and easily shifted horizontally.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel hinge structure and means for mounting the same.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel bracket forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view, partly broken away, of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the device illustrated in Figure l,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the device mounted vertically beneath an eavestrough, and
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the device mounted horizontally beneath an eavestrough.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a device of the character set forth comprising a supporting plate having integrally formed adjacent one of the longer edges thereof a longitudinally extending socket 11 having a circular opening 12 extending therethrough and provided in its outer face with a longitudinally extending slot 13 which communicates with the opening 12.
Centrally and longitudinally extending in the outer face of the supporting plate 1n is a trackway 14 having inturned flanges 15 and 16.
That portion of the plate itl which lies between the socket 11 and the adjacent edge of such plate 10 provides a nailing or screw-receiving strip 17. A shoulder 18 is integrally formed with that longer edge portion of the plate 10 remote from the nailing strip 17 and a keyway 19 is provided longitudinally in the outer lateral face of the shoulder 18.
A pair of hinge arms 20 is atlixed to a hinge base 21 which is slidable in the trackway 14. Two or more of such hinge structures are provided and each pair of hinge arms 20 has pivotally mounted therebetween a tongue 22 of an awning supporting rod 23, the pivotal connection between the tongue 22 and arms 20 being by means of a bolt 24 or the like.
An awning is indicated at 25 and is provided at its inner edge portion with a hem or pocket 26 in which is removably mounted a rod 27.
An L-shaped bracket 28 is shown in that form of the invention illustrated in Figures l, 2 and 4 and one arm thereof is secured by means of a screw 29 or the like while the other arm thereof has extending therethrough a bolt 30 whose head 31 is slidably received in the keyway 19. The bolt 30 is provided with a nut 32.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 3 there is shown an elongated angular bracket 33 having an arm 34 at one end thereof which is adapted to receive a screw 35 or the like and a parallel arm 36 at the other end thereof through which a bolt 30 may be extended so that the head 31 thereof may be received in the trackway 19 as aforesaid.
ln use, it will be apparent that where it is desired to mount the support plate vertically upon the face of a building, it is only necessary to attach the same therethrough oy extending screws 36 or the like to the nailing strip 17 into the vertical face of the building indicated at 38. Bolts 30 may then be mounted with their heads 31 within the keyway 19 and their Shanks extending through arms of the brackets 28. When the brackets 28 are in desired position with respect to the shoulder 18, the nuts 32 may then be tightened to maintain such position and screws 29 or the like extended through the brackets 23 into the building 33. The pocket 26 of the awning 25 may now be extended through the slot 13 into the opening 12 whereupon the rod 27 may be extended into the pocket 26 to thus prevent outward movement of the awning 25 from the socket 11. The hinge structures may now be mounted in any suitable position by extending their bases 21 into the trackways 14 to any desired position. The awning may now be supported in extended position in customary manner but may be shifted horizontaliy to other positions within the device of the present invention by merely sliding the bases 21 to another desired position and at the same time moving the inner end portion of the awning together with the rod 27 to such new position, it being apparent that the supporting plate 163 may be maintained in a single permanent position during such shifting process. It will also be apparent that in all forms of the invention water may not ow by wind pressure or through other means upwardly and over the inner end portion of the awning 25 due to the fact that the same is mounted within the socket lill which latter is integrally formed with the supporting plate 1t?. ln the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 3, the device is identical with that shown in Figures l and 2 except that the screws 36 are utilized to aix the supporting plate 1d beneath an eavestrough 39 while the lower end of the device is supported by means of the bracket 35.
In Figure 4 the device is again identical with that heretofore described with the exception that the device is mounted in a horizontal position by means of the screws 36 and brackets 28, the operation of all forms being identical.
While but certain forms of the invention have been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of th invention or the scope of the appended claims.V
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a horizontally extending supporting plate, a longitudinally extending socket aixed to the outer face of said plate adjacent one longitudinal edge thereof, a shoulder aflixed to the outer face of said plate at the other longitudinal edge thereof, a trackway formed in the outer face of said plate between said socket and said shoulder, hinge arms each having a base slidable in said trackway, awning support rods hingedly connected to said hinge arms, said socket being provided with a longitudinal opening therethrough and with a longitudinal slot communicating with saidopening, an awning having a hem at its inner edge receivable in said opening through said slot, a rod receivable in said hem whereby to support the inner end of said awning, said shoulder having in its outer lateral face a longitudinally extending keyway, and a plurality of brackets each having a headed bolt extending therethrough, said heads of said bolts being slidable in said keyway.
2. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein said shoulder is provided in its outer lateral face with a longitudinally extending keyway, and wherein there is provided a plurality of brackets each having a headed bolt extending therethrough, said heads of said bolts being slidable in said keyway, said brackets being L-shaped.
3. A device as defined in claim l wherein said shoulder is provided in its outer lateral face with a longitudinally extending keyway, and wherein there is provided a plurality of brackets each having a headed bolt extending therethrough, said heads of said bolts being slidable in said keyway, said brackets each having a pair of parallel offset portions and an angularly extending portion interconnecting said parallel portions.
