CITY, MISSOURI.
SELF-CLOSING FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming 'part of Letters Patent No. 278,597, dated May 29, 1883. V i l Application filed December 9,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that W,'ANTON PRIER, CHARLES DOHERTY, and PIERCE E. EVER- ETT, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the ,countyot' Jackson and 5 on said end of the valve-stem, substantially as' hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a sectional elevation of our improved automatically-closing faucet.
In carrying out our invention we employ the faucet spout or nozzle Aland the upright pipe A, with whichthe spout or nozzle is cast or connected, so that the lowersurfaceof the inner end of'thespoutwill form the top of the 2 5 pipe, the bottom surface of the interior of the spout or nozzle being inclined downward from it siextreme inner end around the valve seat or opening therein toward its outerend. The purpose of this construction is to prevent the water standingaronnd the valve seat or openin g and freezing thereat in cold weather. B is the valve-stem,and B. its'valve, thelat; ter being conoidal in form, with itstapering surface projecting upward into and fitting 5 within the opening in the top of the pipe A, formed, asalready stated, by the lower inner surface of the spout A, the sides of said opening being coincidently inclined to form a seat, as at a, for the valve, The valve 0 is fitted upon areduction of thestem, with its upper end resting against the shoulder thus formed on the stem, said valve being secured tdthe stem by a nut, b. The valve-stem B passesup through a water-tight aperture in a 5 partition or seat, O,formed or cast with the inner upturned portion, A of the spout or nLozzleA in the same vertical plane with the valve-seat bpenin g a. The seat or partition 0 l is preferably concaved, and has an air-aperture, 0, through it. i l
D is an elastic inverted cup-shaped cushion or spring, with its flared lower surface resting on theupper outer surface of the partition or seat 0, forming an air-chamber, D, between said cushion and partition, while through the w upper surface of the cushion passes the upper end of the valve-stem B, to, which it is con-' nected by a shoulder, d, on the stem, arranged to lit against the under side of, the cushion, and a pin, Yd, passed through an aperture in the'valve-stem, between the projecting ends of which pin and the cushion or spring is interposed a washer or disk, 6.
. E is an annular packing or ring, fitted within an externally-screw'threaded ueck,f, formed upon the upturned portion A of spout A,said packing or ring bearing upon the flared or flanged edge of the spring or cushion. The packing or ring E is itself secured in place by means of the cap F,providedwith an inter- 7o nally-screw-threaded flange, which screws up-- on the externally-screw-threaded neck f of the spout A, said cap also having a shoulder, upon its inner surface, fitting upon the upper surface of the packing or ring.
Gris the valve-operating lever, pivoted to the inside of the cap F and adapted to bear or rest upon the extreme upper end of the valve-stem B,and to extend through a vertical slot, h, in the cap a suitable distance beyond the cap to be conveniently grasped and operated. I
It will be noticed that when the lever is moved so as to cause it to force the valve-stein, with its valve, downward, causing the valve to leave its sea-t, which will of course allow the 8 water to pass from the pipeA and be dis charged, the cushion or spring D will yieldor be compressed, and that when the lever is released the distending or expansive action of the spring or cushion D will cause the lifting 0 of the valve and its stem, and thus automatically stop the flow of water, while simultaneously the suction action produced by'the in. rushing of air through the aperture 0 into the chamber -D' beneath the cushion or spring D 5 will prevent the valve having a hammering action upon its seat. a
Havingthust'ullydescribedourinvention,we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- 1 In a. faucet, the pipe A, provided with I00 the nozzle or spoutAat its top end, said spout having its bottom surface inclined: outward around the communicating opening between it and the pipe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a faucet, the combination, with the nozzled or apertured pipe and the valve and 1 its stem, of the partition 0, having an aperture, c, the elastic "inverted-cup-shaped cushion "or spring, and the valve-operating lever resting upon the valve-stem, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a faucet, the combination of the pipe A, having the spout or nozzle A, provided with the valve opening or se at,a screw-thread- 15 ed neck, f, and apertured partition 0, with the valve and its stem B, having a shoulder, d, plate 0, and pin 01', the elastic inverted-cupshaped cushion or spring D, packing-ring E, screw-threaded cap 13, and the lever G, sub- 20 stantially as and for the purpose specified.
