Description
N0 Model.)
J. BATES.` l MANUAL POWER. NQ. 278,306. Patented Mey 29,1883.
g To all whom it may concern:
UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASPER BATES, OF THORNBURY, ONTARIO, CANADA.
- MANUAL POWER. i
SPECIFICATION `forming pant` of Letters Patent No. 278,306, dated May 2, 1883.
Application led March 23, 1883., (No model.)
hBe` it known that I, JASPER BATES, of Thornbury, in the county' of Grey, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Ganada, have invented certain new and useful Im` provements inMa-nual Powers; and I do herebydeclare that thefollowing isa full, clear, andexact description of the same.
This in vention consists of a machine in which acompound I ever isworked by the hands, feet, and seat of the operator for driving machinery havin geither a reciprocating or a rotary inotion.
Figure lis a perspective view of my improved machine; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section o f the same, showing its motion in dotted t lines.`
A is `the base-plank, raised from the ground upontransverse feet B, which support the machine in a standing position.
C C are parallel vertical posts, footed tothe base A, and connected at top by cap l), hav` y ing a central hole, through which passes the stem. E of a seat, li, on which the operator sits. The lower end of stem E bears upon one end of a horizontal lever, G, fulcrumed be tween posts HH, secured to base A. l `The opposite end ot' the lever G connects, pivotally, with the end ot'a horizontal lieg of an elbowlever, I, which is fulcrumed at: its angle to posts J J, secured to base A. In a slot in the upperend of the vertical leg ot' lever I is pivoted the shaftot' a handle, K, extending toward the seat F. The pin connecting levers G I projects ou opposite sides of the levers and carries footrests Lr The pin works in an y elongated hole in one of the levers, whereby both levers willhave play motion at the point of connection to tilt above and below a hori-V zontal position, `as seen in Fig. 2. y
Ois a brace to strengthen the angle or elbow of lever I; and P is a pitman pivoted to lever I, to connect horizontally with the mechanism to be driven.'` Q is a removable bar, at tached to horizontal arm of lever I lby thumbscrewN, to obtain a long vertically-operating stroke, if required; or theattachment of the mechanism to be driven may be to any moving part ot my machineand in any suitable manner. 1
When the operator depresses the seat the connected ends of levers G I rise and pivotally throw forward the vertical arm, to which the pitman is connected, and when the operator transfers his weight onto his feet, placed on rests L, the depression thereby ot' the connected ends of the levers will rais-e the sea-t and recede the vertical arm, thus performing hand in the presence of thetwo undersigned witnesses. h
J. BATES.
