UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROOFING on SHEATHING PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,278, dated May 22, 18 83. Application filed October 28,1882. (ModelJ f To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, AUGUSTINE SAGKETT,
1 a citizen of the United States, residing atNew York oity,iu the'county and State of New 5 York, have invented a' new and useful Improvement in Sheathing Paper or Felt for Roofing and other Purposes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accom pan yin gdrawin gs, forming a part thereof.
Figure 1 is a top or plan view, the dotted lines showing the extent of the lap or projec- Fig. 2 is a cross-secj .tional view of Fig. 1 on the line a: x.
115 The object of my invention is toproduce a water-proof sheathing or felt for roofing and other purposes, which can be rolled upinto rolls for transportation or storage. which will not be cemented together or be disagreeable ac to the workmen in handling the same, and not g wmgwliable to be injured by tearing when it is unrolled for use; and to this end my invention consists in cementing together three or more sheets of paper, felt, or canvas with roofingj 2 5, pitch, asphaltic cement, bituminous or other 5 suitable cement, the outer sheets or layers being wider than the inner sheet or layer, so as .to project beyondthe edges of the inner layer or sheet.
3 0 Referring to the drawings, E E indicate the outer sheets of paper, felt, fabric, or other suitable material, which may ormay not he saturated with a suitable water-proof material 1 before being applied to the inner layer or web. 3 5 F is the inside sheet of paper, felt, or other suitable eantime which the wideronter sheets, E 1d,; are cemented. The sheet F is j i saturated orcoated bypassing it through a vat i or ;kettlecontaining roofing-pitch, asphaltic, f it o bituminous, or other suitablewater-proof cemcut; or the cement may be applied in any suitable manner. {The outer sheets, E E, are then ;,joined.to the inner sheet while the same is 1 fresh from the saturating or coating waterfiroof mixture andl snbjected to the requisite pressurebetween rollers or otherwise, so as to .jcansetheouter sheets toadhere to the inner sheet in a smooth and even manner. The object of having the outer sheets project beyond the edges of theinner sheet, as shown by the dotted lines A B O D, is to prevent the cementing and saturating compound used in joining the sheets from running out over the edge of the paper or felt when it is rolled up, and it also serves to seal or pocket the cementing material and prevent its too rapid evaporation. The inner sheet, F, may be a heavy sheet of felt, while the outer sheets may be of ordinary paper; or the three layers may be of the same material and of the same or unequal thicknesses.
I am aware that it is not new to make a pa- .per fabric for the manufacture of water-proof packages consisting of three layers of paper; the middle one of which iswaterproot'ed, the other layers being pasted together at their edges around the waterproofed layer to inclose it. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A fabric for sheathing, rooting, and other purposes, consisting of an'inner sheet or layer of felt or other material, and two outer layers of paper or felt cemented to the opposite sides. of the inner layer, the outer edges of the outer sheets arranged to overlap the edges of the inner layer, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A roofing fabric consisting of aninner layer or sheet of felt or paper saturated with asphaltic or bituminous cement, and two outer layers or sheets of paper or felt inclosing said i inner sheet, and projecting beyond the outer edges of the inner sheet, as set forth.
3. As a new articleofmanufacture, a roofing fabric composed of two outer sheets of paper or felt cemented to an inner and narrower sheet of felt or paperin such a manner that the edges ofthe outer sheets project over both edges of the inner sheet.
