Application March 23, 1954, Serial No. 418,163
1 Claim. (Cl. 164-845) This invention relates to rolls or spools of tape such as adhesive tape, friction tape and tape used for insulation, and in particular a cutting blade and a bracket for suspending the blade in cutting position on a roll or spool of tape whereby the tape may readily be cut as it is drawn from the roll.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an attachment adapted to be readily snapped over a roll or spool of tape whereby the tape may be cut into lengths as it is drawn from the spool.
Various types of machines and other devices have been provided for holding and cutting rolls or spools of tape, however, such devices are comparatively large and bulky and for this reason the use of such devices on a desk is objectionable. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a relatively thin bracket having a cutting blade suspended with an arcuate arm whereby with the bracket snapped over the ends of a core of a roll of tape the tape may readily be withdrawn from the roll and cut by drawing the tape against the cutting blade or knife.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide an attachment adapted to be snapped over a roll of tape in which the attachment provides mounting means for a knife for cutting tape as it is withdrawn from the roll.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for suspending a knife in cutting relation to a roll of tape in which rolls of tape are readily replaceable in the attachment.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for suspending a cutting knife in the path of tape being withdrawn from a roll in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a pair of substantially semicircular fingers adapted to be snapped over the ends of a roll of tape with the fingers carried by a transversely disposed web and with an arcuate arm having a knife blade on the extended end carried by the web from which tht fingers extend.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevational view illustrating the roll or spool tape cutter of this invention with the cutting blade and bracket for supporting the blade shown in broken lines.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the device shown in Fig. 1 showing the fingers of the attachment positioned inside of flanges extended from a tubular core or roll, such as a roll of tape.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the attachment showing the arcuate fingers and also showing the blade carrying arm extended from a web connecting the fingers to the base of the attachment.
Figure 4 is a front elevational view of the device shown in Fig. 3.
Figure 5 is a side elevational view similar to that shown 2,78 1,094 Patented Feb. 12, 1 951 in Fig. 1 illustrating a modification wherein the arcuate fingers extend around a core having. aflange on. one end and in which the device is retained; in, position on the core with a bolt mounted in the extended end of the core.
Figure 6 is a front elevational View of the device as shown in Fig. 5.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved cutter attachment for rolls or spools of tape of this invention includes a cutting blade 10 secured to a flange 11 at the extended end of an arm 12 with fasteners, such as rivets 13, a base 14 from which the arm 12 extends and arcuate fingers 15 and 16 extended from the base. The fingers 15 and 16 are provided with supporting webs 17 and heel portions 18 extend from the lower ends of the webs whereby the fingers are adapted to snap over the ends of a core of a spool of tape, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The base 14 is also provided with a flange 19.
With the parts as disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive the fingers 15 and 16 are inserted between the ends of a roll of tape, such as indicated by the numeral 20 and flanges 21 and 22 of a spool having a core 23 and with the fingers snapped over the core the cutting blade 10 will be suspended by the arm 12 in such a position that as tape, as indicated by the numeral 24 is drawn from the roll it may be cut with the blade 10.
The fingers 15 and 16 are adapted to slide around the core 23, thereby making it possible to locate the cutting blade at any suitable position and whereby a strip of tape of a suitable length may be cut from the tape on the roll.
in the design illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 a cutting blade 25 having a serrated edge 26 is carried by an arcuate arm 27, similar to the arm 12, with the arm extending from a base 28 and with fingers 29 and 30 positioned around a core 31 extended from a flange 32. The core 31 is adapted to extend through a roll or spool of tape, as indicated by the numeral 33 and a flange member 34 on the opposite end is retained in position with a bolt 35 extended through the open end of the core and provided with a nut 36. The base 28 is also provided with a flange 37 with which the cutting blade 25 may be positioned at a suitable point around the roll.
By this means a cutter is provided that may readily be snapped on a roll or spool of adhesive tape, friction or insulating tape and the roll with the cutter thereon may be placed in a small container or in the drawer of a desk or the like.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A tape cutter, comprising a substantially rectangular flat base, an arm extending from said base and having a flange on an end thereof, said arm extending arcuately from said base, said flange being arranged at right angles with respect to the adjacent portion of said arm, a cutting blade secured to said flange, said cutting blade including a portion extending beyond the free edge of said flange, said blade being of greater length than said flange, supporting webs extending inwardly from said rectangular fiat base and having a pair of similar arcuate fingers extending from one end thereof, said webs being wider than the remaining portion of said fingers, heel portions extending from the opposite ends of said webs and adapted to snap over the ends of a core of a spool of tape, a flange extended outwardly from said base and arranged at right angles to said base, said fingers adapted to be inserted between the ends of a spool of tape, said fingers being arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other, said fingers adapted to slide around the .core of the spool of tape whereby a strip of tape of any length may be cut from the spool of tape, the free ends of said fingers being spaced from said heel portions.
