. clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it zip-.-
pertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partot' this specification. My invention relates to improvements in machinery for making twine or cord, but which is designed more particularly as an improveent upon a former patent granted to me under date of April 16, 1878, and numbered 202,406, to which reference may be had, in connection with the following specification, for a more thorough understanding of my present invention, which consists, essentially, in 'the details of construction and general arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

represents a front view of the complete ma chine; Fig. 2, a section taken on the line a: {I}, of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail sectional views.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the main frame of the machine, the upper part of which is provided with my improved revolving frame, which is divided into an upper and lower compartment, B B, as fully shown in Fig. 1.
0 represents the hollow tube, having its hearings in the bottom rail, a, of the lower compartment, B, and provided atits base with a score-pulley, D, and at its top with a cog-gear, E, both being rigidily secured to said tube. The cog-gear E meshes into and revolves the gear-wheels F F, which are arranged on the same line as the said gear E, and are supported on the studs G G in the bottom rail, a.
Above the gear-wheels F F, and also supported on the studs G G, are arranged small gears H H, which revolve the gear-wheels I I attached to the shafts J J, which also carry and revolve the vertical]y-arranged and scored cones K K, said shafts J J having their bearings in the lower rail, a, and in the central rail, b, dividing the upper and lower compartments, B B, as fully shown in Fig. 1.
L represents the hollow spindle, fitting within the tube (J, and provided with holes a, of a number corresponding to the number of strands to compose the cord, and having a circular disk, (1, rigidly secured to its lower end, which is provided with holes 6, opening out-- ward, and corresponding in number and location relatively tothe strands to the holes 0 in the spindle. At the upper part of the said spindle is located the laying-blockf, provided with groovesuunning parallel with, its axis, through which pass the several threads as they are twisted before being united to form the twine or cord.
Above the block fis arranged thecompressor M, which consists of two pieces of spring-steel with projections on the inside, the spaces between which forming the holes i for the cord,- said pieces being supported in recesses g on the tops of the studs G G, and held together by screws h h, as fully shown in thedrawings. A small pin, i, fits into holes '5 in the sides of the said compressor and in the stud G, the distance between such holes corresponding to that between the holes in the center for the cord, whereby any one of the center holes is quickly set over the center of the laying-block fin the upper end of the central spindle, L, to steady the cord and keep it in the center of said spindle to prevent any tendency in the strands to ride. By varying the speed of the hollow tube 0 carrying the gear E the feed is regulated to give the proper or desired amount of twist to the cord, which passes from the compressor M up over the pulley k, which changes the direction of the cord onto the cones K K, which serve to stretch the cord and prevent kinking, and from thence over the pulley It" and through the eye It onto the reel N in the upper compartment, B,of the revolving frame.
In the upper compartment, B, is located the central plate, P, which carries the said reel or spool N, and which is provided with a central spindle, P, having its bearings in the rail 11, between the two compartments B B, and
whose axis is coincident with the axis of the revolving frame, and which also has a motion with reference to said frame, communicated to it through the hub A of the revolving frame by means of the tube 0, which operates the coggears and the shafts J J to impart motion to the said plate P in the following manner:
Atthetops oft-he shafts JJ are provided surfaces Z Z, next leather washers m m,-up on which rest small gears v0, surmounted by leather washers s s and cupped spring-steel washers 'n n, pressed down to produce the proper friction by means of the nuts 19 p. The gears O 0 work in teeth q, provided upon the inside flange of the plate P, and thereby impart motion to the same. The revolving frame is journaled in the upper part of the main frame A of the machine, and provided with the score-pulley D at its bottom to rotate the same, as fully shown in Fig. 1. The spindle L is adjustable vertically by means of the screw A in the main frame A. Beneath therevolving frame, andjournaled in the lower part of the main frame A of the machine, is provided the usual spools or bobbins, which supply the thread to the mechanism in the lower and upper compartments, B B, of said revolving frame in a manner well known.
My device is applicable also for making wire cord or rope, as well as of textile material.
Having thus described my invention, what e I claim as new and useful is- 1. Theplate P, provided with the cogs q and the reel N, in combination with the revolving frame, shafts J'J, cog-wheels O 0, frame A, and mechanism for revolving said shafts J J to effect the drawing off and stretching of the cord, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The compressor M, provided with the holes 6 i screws h h, and pin i, in combination with the studs G G, laying-blockf, and mechanism' for drawing off, stretching, and winding the cord, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The plate P, provided with the cogs gland reel N, in combination with the shafts J J, having the surfaces Z l, the cog-wheels O 0, leather washers m m and s a, steel washers n a, and clamping-nuts 1) 19, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The central spindle, L, provided with the disk at and laying-block], the hollow tube 0, having score-pulley l), and cog-gear E, in combination with the cog-gears F F, H H, and I 1, shafts J J, compressor M, cones K K, cog-wheels O 0, plate P, having cogs q, reel N, and frame A, substantially as and l'or the purpose specified.
