SMOKE GONSUMING FURNACE. N0w277,9-78. Patented May 22,1883.

PATENT QFFICE;
GEORGE'BLACKBURN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANDARD BOILER AND SMOKE OONSUMING FURNACE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SMOKE-CONSUMING FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,978, dated May 22, 1883.
Application filed November 28, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, GEORGE BLACKBURN, of Columbus, Franklin county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 5 in Smoke-Consuming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention pertains to smoke-consuming devices for application to furnaces used in connection with steam-engines; and it consists of an arrangement of pipes for conveying the exhaust-steam from the steam-engine through a superheater to the furnace, and of a peculiar arrangement of the furnace-walls, all as here inafter set forth.
[5 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a boiler-furnace embodying my improvements, and Fig.
2 isa vertical transverse section of the same.
In the drawings, A represents llIQbOllGI;
B, the boiler-flues; O, the breeching; D, the
smoke-stack; E, the ashpit; F, the grate; G,
the fire-place; H, the bridge-wall; I, the firedoor; J, the ash-pit door; K, the tail-wall; L,
the flue-plate; M, the tail-wall door; S, the steam engine; and T, the engines exhaustpipe, all constructed and arranged substantially as usual.
N isa wall under the tail end of the boiler;
O, a flue or opening through the base of wall Q, a flue or space between the top of wall P and the bottom of the boiler; R, a superheating-pipe built in the top of the bridge-wall; U, a pipe from exhaust-pipe T to the superheater R V V, pipes from snperheater R to front of fire-place G, above the fire; W, jet-holes in front ends of pipes V, issuing over the fire; and X, a valve in exhaust-pipe T, above the point where pipe U connects with the exhaust- In operation the valve X is slightly closed,
N; P, a Wall under tail of boiler, near wall N;"
- so as to produce a slight reactive pressure in thecxhaust-pipe. This slight pressure, reacting on the steam-pressure, will produce no serious damaging efi'ect on the engine-power. 5
By reason of this slight pressure part of the exhaust-steam passes to the superheater,where it becomes superheated, or at least has its temperature somewhat raised. The steam leaves the superheater by the pipes V, and jets out 0 over the fire in front and joins the products of combustion. The mingled gases pass over the bridge-wall and impinge against the current-breaking Wall P and become retained a time in the chamber in front of that wall, the 5 from the impingement of the hotgases on their turn upward to the boiler-flues. The steam-pipes are best when built within the brick-work to protect them from burning; but they may be exposed direct to the action of the' tire or hot gases, and the location of the pipes may be. changed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of engine S, exhaustpipe T, valve X, boiler A, furnace G, superheater R, jetted pipes V, p'ipe U, bridge-wall H, walls P, N, and K, and flues or openings Q and O, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a boiler-furnace, of Wall P, having opening Q, and wall N, having openings 0 and c and doors d, substantially as set forth.
' GEO. BLACKBURN.
