CAN CARRIER AND BLANK THEREOF Filed Dec. 7, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 CAN CARRIER AND BLANK THEREOF Francis A. Chidsey, In, Wayne, Pa., assignor to Container Corporation of America, Chicago, III., a corporation of Delaware Application December 7, 1955, Serial No. 551,552
9 Claims. (Cl. 220-108) This invention relates to can carriers of foldable paperboard or the like which are adapted to hold a plurality of cans in single merchandising unit and more particularly to such a can carrier adapted to hold cans of the chime end type in two rows of two or more cans each. In one of its aspects, the invention also relates to a blank adapted to be formed into an improved can carrier of the type described.
It is an object of the invention to provide a new and improved paperboard can carrier for the packaging of a plurality of chime end cans into a single unit. Another object is to provide a can carrier of the tubular open end type for the retention and transportation of two rows of cans which is exceptionally sturdy and capable of withstanding the stresses of handling and shipment. Still another object is to provide such a can carrier which is simple in construction and economical to manufacture in large quantities. A further object is to provide a novel blank for the manufacture of such a can carrier formed from a single sheet of boxboard or the like. Still further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the ensuing detailed description thereof read in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can carrier according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an end view of the can carrier of Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows the blank from which the can carrier of Figure 1 is made;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of another form of can carrier according to the invention;
Figure 5 is an end view of the can carrier of Figure 4 and Figure 6 shows the blank from which the can carrier of Figure 4 is made.
Referring first to Figure 3 the blank 10 is an elongated sheet of foldable paperboard such as boxboard in substantially rectangular form having a plurality of parallel transverse folds or score lines 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 which define, in sequence, a partition panel 20, a partial bottom Wall panel 21, a side wall panel 22, a partial top wall panel 23, a flange panel 24, a second flange panel 25, a second partial top wall panel 26, a second side wall panel 27, a second partial bottom wall panel 28 and an attaching strip 29. Handle members 30 and 31 are struck from the material of partial top wall panels 23 and 26 and are hinged to flange panels 24 and 25 along score lines 14 and 16, respectively.
As will be seen from Figure 1, when the holder has been formed from the blank 10, attaching strip 29 is secured to partition panel adjacent score line 11, the flange panels 24 and are folded inwardly along score line 15 and secured in face-to-face relation so that score line 14 and 16 are in juxtaposition, and the portion of partition panel 20 adjacent its free end 34 is secured to one of the flange panels, in this case flange panel 24. Preferably the parts are secured by means of adhesive, but other known attaching means or combinations therenited States Patent 0 'ice of may be employed. Each of the partial wall panels is provided with a can-retaining tab 35 adjacent each of its ends which operates in a manner well-known in the art to retain chime-end cans within the tubular holder. The handle members 30 and 31 are preferably substantially identical in dimension and configuration as shown, although that is not essential to the invention. In Figure 1, handle members 30 and 31 are shown in their extended or upwardly folded position for use, but it should be understood that they generally remain in the plane of partial top wall panels 23 and 26, respectively, until the can carrier is to be transported by hand.
Referring now to the modified form shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6, the blank 40 has a plurality of fold or score lines 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49 and 50 which define, in sequence, an attaching strip 51, a partial bottom wall panel 52, a side wall panel 53, a partial top wall panel 54, a flange panel 55, a second flange panel 56, a second partial top wall panel 57, a second side wall panel 58, a second partial bottom wall 59, a partition panel 60, and a handle member 61, the handle member being of substantially less width than the blank 40 and being located centrally of the Width of the blank. A second handle member 62 is struck from the material of partial top wall panel 54 and is hinged along score line 44. Handle member 62 is at least as large as handle member 61 in order to allow handle member 61 to extend through the opening in panel 54 when handle member 62 is extended upwardly as shown in Figure 4 In the assembled condition of the can carrier of Figures 4 and 5, attaching strip 51 is secured to partition panel 60 adjacent score line 49, flange panels 55 and 56 are folded and secured in face-to-face relation, and the portion of partition panel 60 adjacent score line 50 is secured to flange panel 55, so that handle panels 61 and 62 are in juxtaposition. This structure has the advantage that if a boxboard having a white outer liner is used, for example, the white liner is on the exposed surfaces of both handle panels. Handle members 61 and 62 may be adhesively secured together if desired.
It will be apparent that many other modifications of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and it is therefore desired that the invention should not be limited by the foregoing description but should be considered to be as broad as the lan guage of the appended claims will permit.
I claim:
