SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,927, dated May 22, 1883.

Be it known that I, DORWIN G. POWELL, a citizen of the United States,residing atAquetuck, in the town of Ooeymans, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and tiset'ul Improvement in Thill or Shalt Tugs for Harness, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in shaft-tugs which open to admit or let out the shafts'or thills; and the object of'my invention is to avoid the necessity of putting the ends of'thc shafts or thills through the tugs, with its accompanying inconveniences, by providing a neat, simple, and durable snap, by

which the tug may be readily opened to admit or let out the shaft, or closed to retain it. I attain this object by placing upon the tug a snap attachment, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicht Figure 1 represents the entire shaft-tug ith the snap attachment closed in position to hold the shaft- Fig. 2 represents the tug with the snap attachment opened to receive or let out the shaft. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of the snap, and Fig. 4 represents the staple or attachment into which the snap catches when closed.

The snap A has its lower flange or arm, (J, extended downward and curved so as to fit the proper curve of the tug, and is secured to the tug by screws or rivets. The tongue B of the snap protrudes through an opening in the back part of the snap, so as to form a projection or thumb-piece,b,on theoutside of the tug, by means of which the tongue-piece B of the snap may be readily raised in'unsnappi-ng or openingthetug. The tongue-pieceBis pressed down against the end or head a of the snap A by means of a spring. The 'snapA has the head part a somewhat curved in toward the body of the snap, as shown in Figs. 1,2, and 3, so as to preserve the proper oval shape to the tug, and to more securely hold the, tug in its proper place an doccupy as small space as possible. The snap may be placed upon any thill or shaft tug, such tug being opened at the upper side thereof, so that the snap A may be fastened to the loose end, and the staple or attachment D, into which the snap catches, being fastened to the part of the tug secured to the rest of the harness, or to the vertical strap,

'which forms a part of the harness, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which staple D is fastened with and trouble saved in harnessing and unhar-' nessing single horses I am aware that prior to my invention shafttugs which openedhavebeen used. I therefore do not claim, br0adly,'any shaft-tug which may be opened; but

hat 1 do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination with a leather shaft or thill tug, the snap A, curved to lit the tug, and having an end of its tongue 13 protruding through the back of the snap, forming the thumb-piece b, by which the tongue of the snap can be raised and the tug opened and closed, and the staple or attachment 1) for the snap to catch into, all substantially as set forth.

2. A snap, A, curved to fit shaft-tugs, and having the tongue 13, protruding through the back of the snap, forming theprojection or thumb-piece b, by which the tongue can be raised, substantiallyas shown, for the purpose specified.
