Description
awassv The cover member 2 has a flexible membrane or diaphragm portion 8 having as a part thereof a stud 10. A vent aperture 9 passes through the stud whereby the interior of thecontainer may be vented to atmosphere. The operating stud 15 of the combined conduit and operating member is adapted to engage the stud 10 and, while so engaging the stud, to close the aperture 9. It will be understood that the combined conduit and operating member is inherently sufliciently flexible so that when a downward force is applied to the mouthpiece end 6, the combined conduit and operating position will bend and the operating stud portion be moved toward the stud 10. It will also be understood that the cover member 2, since it is made of a flexible material, will, upon downward I movement of the mouthpiece 6 deform slightly in the vicinity of the apertured conduit member stud 3. Consequently, the combined conduit and operating member will be able to pivot about the stud 3 if there is insufficient inherent resilience in the rounded conduit portion joining the vertical and horizontal conduit portions.
The cover member 2 carries guide posts 11 and 12 for guiding the movement of the combined conduit and operating member within a plane traversed by the flexible portion 8 of the cover member 2. As is best seen in Figs. 2 and 3, the guide posts are spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the outside diameter of the horizontal conduit portion so as to prevent lateral movement of the latter and to limit the movement thereof to a substantially vertical plane.
A stop member 13 is located between the guide posts 11 and 12 and limits the downward movement of the horizontal conduit portion 5. A compression spring 14 is interposed between the cover member 2 and the horizontal conduit portion 5 so as to urge the latter away from the cover member, thereby urging the operating stud portion 15 away from the apertured stud 10. As is seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the spring 14 is substantially concentric with the stop 13 so that the latter also acts as a positioning means for the spring 14.
The cover member 2 also has a filler opening stud 17 adapted to receive a stopper 16, shown in Fig. 4. In this way it is possible to fill the container 1 through the opening afforded by the stud 17 without it being necessary to remove the cover 2 from the container 1.
The operation of the dispenser is as follows:
When the operator desires to obtain a certain amount of liquid he depresses the mouthpiece end 6 of the combined conduit and operating member. This may be accomplished by inserting a wad of cotton, held by pincers, into the funnel-shaped mouthpiece end of the combined conduit and operating member. The combined conduit and operating member is then moved against the bias of the spring 14 whereby the operating stud portion 15 is brought to bear against the apertured stud of the cover member 2. The stud 10 forms a valve seat and the operating stud portion constitutes a valve so that when the operating stud portion 15 is brought into contact with the stud 10 the operating stud portion 15 closes the aperture 9. When the operating stud portion 15 is then further moved downwardly the flexible portion 8 of the cover member 2 flexes inwardly so as to decrease the volume of the space within the container 1 above the liquid level of a liquid contained therein, and consequently the pressure within that space is increased. As the flexible portion 8 is flexed inwardly and as the pressure within the container 8 is increased, liquid rises through the vertical conduit portion of the combined conduit and operating member and passes through the rounded conduit portion and the horizontal portion 5 into the funnelshaped mouthpiece end of the combined conduit and operating member. The wad of cotton will then absorb the liquid and is withdrawn from the mouthpiece end of the combined conduit and operating member. The spring 14 will thereupon urge the combined conduit and operating member away from the cover member 2 and the operating stud portion 15 will be urged away from the stud. 10 so as to uncover the aperture 9 and atmospheric pres-- sure will be restored to the space within the container 1. above the liquid level.
The stop 13 limits the downward movement of the operating stud portion 15 so that a certain predetermined amount of liquid will be forced through the conduit portion of the combined conduit and operating member 15. If it is desired to pass more than such predetermined amount of liquid through the conduit portion theupward and downward movement of the combined conduit and operating member may be repeated as desired- A modified combined conduit and operating member 4 having a diflerently shaped mouthpiece or outer end 6 is shown in Fig. 5. The combined conduit and operating member has a horizontal conduit portion 5 and operating stud portion 15 corresponding to the conduit. portion 5 and the operating stud portion 15 of the combined conduit and operating member illustrated in Fig. l. The upper lip edge 2% of the mouthpiece overlies the lower lip edge so as to protect the mouthpiece against the introduction of foreign particles. The mouthpiece of the combined conduit and operating member of Fig. 5 differs from that of Fig. l in that the approximate center axis of the funnel-shaped mouthpiece is inclined slightly upwardly with respect to the liquid level of a liquid within the container 1. By virtue of such an arrangement any excess liquid not absorbed by a cotton wad will flow back readily into the container after the termination of the dispenser operation.
It will be understood that the mouthpiece portion of the combined conduit and operating members illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5 may either be integral with the respective horizontal conduit portions or may be separate members suitably joined thereto.
The cover member 2 may be molded or formed by injection molding or by injection die-casting. The cover member when so produced may include as integral parts thereof the filler opening stud 17, the apertured conduit member stud 3, the guide posts 11 and 12, the combined stop and positioning member 13, as well as the flexible portion 8, together with the apertured stud 11) thereof.
It will be understood, therefore, that the assembling of a dispenser according to the present invention is ex tremely simple. After the spring 14 is placed over the positioning member 13 and the combined conduit and operating member is inserted through the stud 3, the resulting cover assembly is then placed on the container 1. The container may be filled with a liquid to be dispensed either before the cover assembly is placed thereon or may be filled through the stud 17 after the cover assembly has been mounted onto the container. The stopper 16 is then inserted into the stud 17 so as to close the container.
Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate a modification of the dispenser shown in Figs. 1 to 5. A cover member 2 having a dome-shaped flexible portion 21 is mounted on a container 1'. The flexible portion 21 has a vent aperture reinforced by an annular ring 22. A dispenser according to this embodiment includes a movably mounted combined conduit and operating member 4' having a horizontal conduit portion 5 and a mouthpiece portion 6. The movement of the combined conduit and operating member 4' is guided by guide posts 11' and 12 (not shown).
The operating stud portion 15 of the combined conduit and operating member 4 of Fig. 1 is replaced by an actuating member having an actuating portion 23 which is movably arranged on the cover member 2' for movegment between the combined conduit and operating member 4' and the vent aperture 9' of the flexible portion 21 of the cover member 2'. The actuating portion 23 is connected to an inherently resilient intermediate portion 24 which, in turn, is connected to a base portion 26 having a peg 25. The actuating member is preferably an integral ,piece made of a material .nnatfected .by tlrer liquid robe dispensed.

While the invention has been illustratedand described as vembodied in a liquid dispensermakingnseof arsingle combined conduit and operating' member, it .is.not=in tended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes .mayfbe made without departing in any way fromthe spirit dfithe present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing wilLso fully reveal the gist of the present'invention that .others :can
by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various. applications without omitting features that, from-the standpoint of prior art, fairly.constituteessential;characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this-invention and, therefore, such adaptations shouldandareintended to be comprehended within the meaningand' range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A liquid dispenser comprising, in combination, a closedcontainer; pump-means associated with said container for varying the pressure therein;and a. combined conduit and operating member for placing the interior of said container in communication with the exterior thereof, said combined conduit and operating member being mounted on said container forpivotal movement relative thereto and operatively associated with-saidpump means for operating thelatter when said combinedpconduitand operating member is pivoted relative to said eon-v tainer thereby causing discharge of'liquid Ithroughsaid combined conduit and operatingmember while the same is pivoted relative .to said container.
2. A liquid dispenser comprising, in combination, acontainer having an opening; a cover member coveringsaid opening so as to close Sfilid container; pumpmeans associated with said cover member for varying the. pressure within said container; and a combinedconduit and operating -member for placing the interior of said container in communication'with the exterior thereof, said combined conduit and'operating member being mounted on said cover 'member for pivotal movement relative thereto andoperatively associated with said pump means for operating the 'latterwhen said'combined conduit and operating member is 'pivotedrelative to said cover member therebycausing discharge of liquid through said combined conduit and operating 'member 'while the same is "pivoted relative to isaid cover member.

5. A .liquid dispenser, comprising, .in combination, a container having an opening; .a cover member covering said opening so as to close said container, .at least a port-ion of said cover member being'flexible; and a combined conduit and operating member movably arranged on said cover member, said combined conduitand operating member having a conduit portion connecting the interior of said container with theexterior, the inner'end of said conduit portion being adapted to communicate with aliquid within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a mouthpiece portion, and having also an operating stud portion at -a .PlEICEiDtED mediate the ends of said conduit portion exterior of said container and opposite. said flexible portion of said cover member, so that when said combined conduit and operating memberis moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member, said operating stud portion of said combined conduit andoperating member flexes said flexible portion of said cover member so as to vary the volume of. and consequently the pressure within said container'thereby causing discharge of liquid through said conduit portion and mouthpiece portion of said combined conduit and operating member while the sameis moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member.
6. A liquid dispenser, comprising, in combination, .a containerhaving an opening; a cover member covering said opening so as to close said container, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible; a combined conduit and operating member movably arranged on said cover member, said combined conduit and operating 'm-eniber having a conduit; portion. connecting the interior of-said container'with' the exterior, the. inner end of said e r ss? conduit portion being adapted to communicate with a liquid within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a mouthpiece portion, and having also an operating stud portion at a place intermediate the ends of said conduit portion exterior of said container and opposite said flexible portion of said cover member, so that when said combined conduit and operating member is moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member, said operating stud portion of said combined conduit and operating member flexes said flexible portion of said cover member so as to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure within said container there by causing discharge of liquid through said conduit portion and mouthpiece portion of said combined conduit and operating member while the same is moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member; and biassing means connected to said cover member and said combined conduit and operating member for urging said operating stud portion of said combined conduit and operating member away from said flexible portion of said cover member.

A liquid dispenser, comprising, in combination, a container having an opening; a cover member covering said opening so as to close said container, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible; a combined conduit and operating member movably arranged on said cover member, said combined conduit and operating member having a conduit portion connecting the interior of said container with the exterior, the inner end of said conduit portion being adapted to communicate with a liquid within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a mouthpiece portion, and having also an operating stud portion at a place intermediate the ends of said. conduit portion and opposite said flexible portion of said cover member, so that when said combined conduit and operating member is moved relative to said exible portion of said cover member, said operating stud portion of said combined conduit and operating member flexes said flexible portion of said cover member so as to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure Within said container thereby causing discharge of liquid through said conduit portion and mouthpiece portion of said combined conduit and operating member while the same is moved relative to said flexible portion of said cover member; and guide means carried by said cover member for guiding the movement of said combined conduit and operating member within a plane traversed by said flexible portion of said cover member.

A liquid dispenser, comprising, in combination, a container having an opening; a cover member covering said opening so as to close said container, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible; a combined conduit and operating member movably arranged on said cover member, said combined conduit and operating member having a conduit portion connecting the interior of said container with the exterior, the inner end of said conduit portion being adapted to communicate with a liquid Within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a mouthpiece portion, and having also an operating stud portion at a place intermediate the ends of said conduit portion exterior of said container and opposite said flexible portion of said cover member, so that when said combined conduit and operating member is moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member, said operating stud portion of said combined conduit and operating member flexes said flexible portion of said cover member so as to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure within said container thereby causing discharge of liquid through said conduit portion and mouthpiece portion of said combined conduit and operating member while the same is moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member; guide means carried by said cover member for guiding the movement of said combined conduit and operating member within a plane traversed by said flexible portion of said cover member;

A liquid dispenser, comprising, in combination, a container having an opening; a cover member covering said opening so as to close said container, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible, said flexible portion having a vent aperture connecting the interior of said container with the exterior; and a combined conduit and operating member movably arranged on said cover member, said combined conduit and operating member having a conduit portion connecting the interior of said container with the exterior, the inner end of said conduit portion being adapted to communicate with a liquid within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a mouthpiece portion, and having also an operating stud portion at a place intermediate the ends of said conduit portion and opposite said vent aperture of said flexible portion of said cover member, so that when said combined conduit and operating member is moved relative to said flexible portion of said cover memher, said operating stud portion of said combined conduit and operating member closes said vent aperture of said flexible portion and flexes said flexible portion of said cover member so as to vary the volume of and consequent ly the pressure within said container thereby causing discharge of liquid through said conduit portion and mouthpiece portion of said combined conduit and operating member While the same i moved relative to said flexible portion of said cover member.
10. A liquid dispenser, comprising, in combination, a container having an opening; a cover member covering said opening so as to close said container, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible; and a combined conduit and operating member movably arranged on said cover member, said combined conduit and operating member having a conduit portion connecting the interior of said container with the exterior, the inner end of said conduit portion being adapted to communicate with a liquid Within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a funnel-shaped mouthpiece portion, and having also an operating stud portion at a place intermediate the ends of said conduit portion and opposite said flexible portion of said cover member, so that When said combined conduit and operating member is moved relative to said flexible portion of said cover member, said operating stud portion of said combined conduit and operating member flexes said flexible portion of said cover member so as to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure within said container thereby causing discharge of liquid through said conduit portion and mouthpiece portion of said combined conduit and operating member While the same is moved relative to said flexible portion of said cover member.

A liquid-dispenser, corn-prising ini combination, a container having an opening; a cover member covering said openingso as to-close said container, at least'a portion of-sai'd cover-member beingflexible; -acombined-conduit i and operating 'member 'movably arranged on .said cover ,member, said combined "conduit and :operatingmember having a conduitportion connecting'the interior'of said container with the exterior, the inner end of said conduit portion being adapted to communicate with a liquid within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a mouthpiece portion, and having also an operating stud portion at a place intermediate the ends of said conduit portion exterior of said container and opposite said flexible portion of said cover member, so that when conduitrand operatingmemberrflexes said flexible portion of saidcover-member so as to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure -within said container thereby causing discharge. of. liquid through said conduit portion r and imouthpiece portion of -:said combined conduit and :operatingzmember while thesame is movedttoward said fiexible portion *ofsaid cover member; guide meanscart, riedby said cover member for guiding the movementrof said :combined conduit and operating member within a a .-plane traversed by said flexibleportion of said cover .a place intermediate thenends Ofsaidconduit portion, and 50 member;-spring means connected to said cover member and ".said combinedconduit .and operating member 'for urging-said. operatingistud portion of said combined conduit :and operating, member ;away from said flexible portion ofsaidcover Inemberaandcombined stop and positioning zmeansicarried by saidcover member'for limiting .the movement of said combined conduitsandoperating member toward said flexible portionof said coverrmem- .-ber.and for positioningssaid spring means with respect to ssaid coverrmember: and said combined-conduitand operating member.

A liquid dispenser, comprising, in combination, a
container having an opening; a cover member covering said opening so as to close said container, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible, said flexible portion having a vent aperture connecting the interior of said container with the exterior; a combined conduit and operating member movably arranged on said cover memher, said combined conduit and operating member having a conduit portion connecting the interior of said container with the exterior, the inner end of said conduit portion being adapted to communicate with a liquid within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a mouthpiece portion; and an actuating member movably arranged on said cover member for movement between said combined conduit and operating member and said vent aperture of said flexible portion of said cover member, so that when said combined conduit and operating member is moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member, said actuating member closes said vent aperture of said flexible portion and flexes said flexible portion of said cover member so as to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure within said container thereby causing discharge of liquid through said conduit portion and mouthpiece portion of said combined conduit and operating member while the same is moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member.

In a liquid dispenser comprising a container having pump means associated therewith for varying the pressure within the container, a cover member, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible and adapted to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure within the container, said cover member having an apertured stud adapted to receive a conduit member passing through said cover member, said cover member also having at least one guide member adapted to guide the movement of the pump means, and said cover member also having a combined stop and positioning member adapted to limit the movement of the pump means and to position biassing means adapted to cooperate with the pump means.

In a liquid dispenser comprising a container having pump means associated therewith for varying the pressure Within the container, a cover member, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible and adapted to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure within the container, said cover member having an apertured filler opening stud adapted to receive a stopper, said cover member also having an apertured conduit member stud adapted to receive a conduit member passing through said cover member, said cover member also having at least one guide member adapted to guide the movement of the pump means, and said cover member also having a combined stop and positioning member adapted to limit the movement of the pump means and to position biassing means adapted to cooperate with the pump means.

In a liquid dispenser comprising a container having a flexible portion and an operating member cooperating with a said flexible portion of the container so as to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure within the container, an actuating member having an actuating portion between the operating member and the flexible portion of the container and adapted to flex the latter when moved by the former, an intermediate portion connected to said actuating portion, and a base portion connected to said intermediate portion, said actuating member being connected at said base portion thereof to the liquid dispenser.
21. A liquid dispenser comprising, in combination, a container having an opening; a cover member covering said opening so as to close said container, at least a portion of said cover member being flexible, said flexible portion having a vent aperture connecting the interior of said container with the exterior; a combined conduit and operating member movably arranged on said cover member, said combined conduit and operating member having a conduit portion connecting the interior of said container with the exterior, said conduit portion extending throughout part of its length adjacent the outer end thereof substantially parallel to the liquid level of a liquid within said container, the inner end of said conduit portion being adapted to communicate with a liquid within said container and said conduit portion having at its outer end a funnel-shaped mouthpiece portion, the upper lip edge thereof overlying the lower lip edge thereof, and also having an operating stud portion at a place intermediate the ends of said conduit portion exterior of said container and opposite said vent aperture of said flexible portion of said cover member, so that when said combined conduit and operating member is moved toward said flexible portion of said cover memher, said operating stud portion of said combined conduit and operating member closes said vent aperture of said flexible portion and flexes said flexible portion of said cover member so as to vary the volume of and consequently the pressure Within said container thereby causing discharge of liquid through said conduit portion and mouthpiece portion of said combined conduit and operating member While the same is moved toward said flexible portion of said cover member; guide means carried by said cover member for guiding the movement of said combined conduit and operating member within a plane traversed by said flexible portion of said cover member; spring means connected to said cover memher and said combined conduit and operating member for urging said operating stud portion of said combined conduit and operating member away from said flexible portion of said cover member; and combined stop and positioning means carried by said cover member for limiting the movement of said combined conduit and operating member toward said flexible portion of said cover member and for positioning said spring means with respect to said cover member and said combined conduit and operating member.

A liquid dispenser, comprising, in combination, a closed container; pump means associated with said container for varying the pressure therein; and a combined conduit and operating member mounted on said container for simultaneous pivot movement relative thereto and substantially reciprocating movement relative to said pump means for placing the interior of said container in communication with the exterior thereof and for operating said pump means when said combined conduit and operating member reciprocates relative thereto whereby when said combined conduit and operating member is pivoted relative to said container said combined conduit and actuating member reciprocates relative to said pump means thereby operating the same and causing the discharge of fluid through said combined and operating member while the same is pivoted relative to said contniner.
