Inspection of Figure 2 will reveal that the Outrigger box is' provided with a plurality'ofaperturesSS selected" ones' of which are'stopped by means. of' plugs 3'6', the plugs being movablefrom one aperture 35"to anotlier as selected. Obviously, the pressure applied to the jack 18 by the piston rod 33 urges the inner end of the jack leg 21 to traverse the cam 25 but the latch or dog 34 prevents its movement until such time as the dog 34 is permitted entrance into an aperture 3S and yassumes the position indicated by dotted lines of Figure 2 by means of the pressure exerted thereupon by the inner end of the jack 18 being urged upwardly by the lips 27 of cam 25, whereupon the jack is extended to the dotted line position by continued pressure of motor 32. Movement of the Outrigger beam 17 is precluded by reason of the dog 34 having gained entrance yto the aperture 35 thus insuring accurate positioning and movement of the jack 18. It will also be noted that while the jack 18 is in its supporting position, the piston rod 33 is in a position supporting the latch or dog 34 and precluding its return pivotal movement a Idistance sutiicient to be withdrawn from the aperture 35 and therefore when the pressure of cylinder 32 isreversed to withdraw the jack 18 from its supporting position, inward movement of the beam 17 is precluded by the latch 34 until such time as the jack 18 has -again assumed its normal position shown Vin full line of Figure 2 whereupon the latch 34 is permitted to return to its full line position and the beam 17 is drawn inwardly into the Outrigger box 16. As indicated in the drawing, the jack 18 is provided with a laterally extending pressure plate 3'7 providing a relatively large supporting surface for the upper end of the jack 18.
In the device disclosed in Figures l, 2, and 3, of the drawing, we disclose the pivoted dog type latch 34 wherein extension of the beam 17 is limited to the overallY length of the jack 18, since it is necessary that the latch remain within the Outrigger box at all times. However, in Figures 4 through 6 we have shown a modified latch 34 which permits extension of the Outrigger beam to any extent limited only by the length of the Outrigger box and latch mechanism. In this device the jack and power mechanisms are identical but the latch 34 is formed with a confining lip 40 which contines the inner end of the jack 18 and precludes its movement over the cam 25 and has an inwardly extending arm 41 provided with a right angle hook or finger 42 which extends through an aperture 43 in the Outrigger beam 17 and bears against the inner side face of the Outrigger box 16. Spaced along the side wall of the Outrigger box 16 are a number Of apertures 44 and these also are provided with plugs 36 (omitted in this view) to permit the operator to stop or plug the apertures 44 which, for the time being, he does not desire to use.
It will be noted that the spring 45 urges the lip 42 toward the inner side face of the side wall Of Outrigger box 16 and therefore into hooking or latching engagement with the apertures 14 as the Outrigger beam 17 is moved outwardly from Vthe box. The latch 34 is provided with an expansion spring 46 which urges the latch 34 into locking engagement with the jack 18 and it will be noted that as the lip 42 engages in aperture 44 continued outward movement of the beam 17 by reason of the hydraulic cylinder 32 will cause the lip 40 to be withdrawn from conning the jack 18 and continued expansion of hydraulic cylinder motor 32 will cause the jack 18 to be disposed in its supporting position. Reverse powered movement of the cylinder 32 will eiect movement of the jack to its normal position disposed within the beam 17.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a mobile crane or the like, an Outrigger support comprising a horizontally extending Outrigger box carried by the frame of said crane; a tubular Outrigger beam telescopically associated with saidk Outrigger box; power means operably connected to selectively extend and retract .said Outrigger beam; a supporting jack carried by the beam normally disposed in an inoperative position and operably connected for movement by said power means to av depending positionyatthe outer end-Of said Outrigger beam; and means normally securing said beam and jack together in said inoperative position and actuable at a selected one of a number of predetermined relative telescopic positions of said box and beam to a releasing position, whereby said power means successively eects telescopic movement of said beam to said telescopic position and subsequently moves said jack to its operative position.
2. In a mobile crane or the like an Outrigger support comprising an Outrigger box carried by the frame of said crane and horizontally extending transversely thereof; a reciprocable tubular Outrigger beam telescopically associated with said Outrigger box; a support jack normally disposed axially in said beam and movable to a supporting position depending at a right angle from the outer end thereof; power means operably connected to said support jack for selectively moving said jack to its supporting operative position and normal inoperative position; and means securing the jack in its normal position to said Outrigger beam for effecting telescopic movement of said Outrigger beam in said box by said' power means and releasable at one of a number of predetermined positions to effect movement of said jack by said power means to its supporting operative position sequentially.
3. In `a mobile crane or the like an Outrigger support comprising an Outrigger box carried by the frame of said crane and horizontally extending transversely thereof; a tubplar Outrigger beam telescopically associated with said Outrigger box and reciprocable therein; a support jack normally disposed axially in said beam and movable Y to a supporting position depending at a right angle from the outer end of said beam; a latch carried by said beam and movable to an operative position wherein the support jack is releasably secured in its normal position with said beam and to an inoperative position where the support jack is released for movement to its supporting position; power means secured relative to the frame of said machine and adapted to apply pressure axially of said support beam on said support jack and operable to urge said latch to its inoperative position, whereby the jack is moved from its normal position to the supporting position when the latch is in its inoperative position; and means on said Outrigger box for actuating said latch when said Outrigger beam is disposed in selected telescopic relationship with said Outrigger box.
4. In a mobile crane or the like an Outrigger support comprising an Outrigger box carried by the frame Ofsaid crane and horizontally extending transversely thereof; a tubular Outrigger beam telescopically associated with said Outrigger box for reciprocal movement therein; said beam having at its outer end a support jack movable from a normal inoperative position within said beam to an operative position wherein the jack extends downwardly at a right angle to the beam to support the end thereof; mo-
tivating means secured relative to the frame of said ma-v chine and operably connected to move said support jack to its depending position; a latch releasably securing said jack in its normal inoperative position rigid with'said beam, whereby energizing of said motivating means telescopically extends and retracts said Outrigger beam; and means on said Outrigger box adapted to actuate said latch at selected outwardly extending telescopic positions of said Outrigger beam for effecting movement of said support jack to its supporting position at selected locations.
5. In a mobile crane or the like, an Outrigger support comprising a horizontally extending Outrigger box carried by the frame of said crane; an Outrigger beam telescopically associated with said Outrigger box; power means operably connected intermediate a xed position relative to said frame and said Outrigger beam for selectively extending and retracting the beam; a supporting jack carried by the beam and selectively movable alternately to an operative supporting position and an inoperative position by means operably connecting said jack and said powered means; and meansnormally securing said beam.
