Y., a corporation of'NewYork Application April 18, 1955, Serial N0..502, 048 3 Claims. -(Cl. 45-682) The present invention relates to an improved carrying case which is particularly useful for holding and protecting relatively heavy objects such as a portable typewriter.

The present application is a continuation-in-part of our application Serial No. 408,686 filed February 8, 1954, now abandoned.

A carrying case for a relatively heavy object such as a portable typewriter must be quite rugged to withstand the harsh treatment it is put to while being carried and should form a stablesupport for the typewriter when not being carried. Obtaining these results without employing a complicated and unduly expensive structure is diflicult to achieve.

The present structure comprises opposite, identical cover portions joined to a central or midportion all joined together in a unitary structure so arranged that the midportion to which the carrying handle is attached, supports the weight of the typewriter. As the cover portions are identical, tooling costs are relatively low. In addition, the midportion supports the weight directly below the handle so that the loaded case is stable both while being carried and when at rest on a fixed, flat support such as a table or floor. The cover portions each include at least a pair of leg portions with the leg portions in at least one cover portion serving the dual purpose of also receiving respective hinge portions for hingedly supporting the cover portion.

The advantages of the present invention will become more readily apparent from the following detailed description, taken with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the carrying case comprises a metal band 10 which completely encircles and constitutes the midportion of the case and the two opposite cover portions 11 and 12 which form the two sides of the case. A carrying handle 13 is attached to the top of the band 10. As the band 10 also constitutes the midportion of the case, the band 10 supports all or substantially all of the load when the case is being carried by the handle. The cover portions 11 and 12 preferably are formed of plastic material, for example, fiber glass impregnated with a moldable plastic material, so that these covers can be readily formed with 2,777,245 1 Patented Jan. 15, 1957 the desired configuration. One advantage of the present structure is that the cover portions 11 and 12 may be identical or sufficiently similar to be formed in the same mold, thereby reducing the cost of the equipment required to manufacture the case.

The band member 10 includes flat edge portions 14 and 15 extending along the opposite outer edges thereof.

A laterally outwardly displaced rib 17 extends around band 10"along the inner edge of the edge portion 15. A similar rib 18 extends around the band 10 adjacent the edge portion 14. The ribs 17 and 18 reenforce the displaced outwardly and receive in telescoping relationship the respective edge portions 15 and 14 of band 10. The cover 12 is attached in, a fixed position to the band 10 by means of rivets 22 spaced about the periphery. Other suitable fastening means may be used.

In the flange portion 20 of cover portion 11, there are found a pair of depending leg portions 23. A similar pair of depending leg portions 24 are present in flange 19. The four leg portions 23, 24 have coplanar lower surfaces for supporting the carrying case in an upright position when placed on the floor, table or other fiat surfaced object. The legs 23 also serve as receptacles for the hinge means connecting the cover portion 11 to the band 10. A pin 25 which may be one continuous pin or pin sections, is mounted in rib 18. For each leg portion 23 there is a hinge member 27 which has an end portion extending into and fastened in the respective leg portions 23 by means of rivets 28. The hinge member 27 also has a portion 29 extending about and hingedly or rotatably mounted on pin 25. The rib 18 is provided with cut out portion or slot 30 to allow hinge portion 29 to extend from inside of leg 23 up and around and swing about pin 25. Inwardly depressed portions 31 and 32 are provided in rib 18 at opposite ends of slot 30 for extending inwardly around pin 25 to hold it in place in rib 18. The band 10 forms a hinge bracket with member 27 being the hinge strap and other half of the hinge. The legs 23 receive the respective hinge straps 27 and the cover 11 is not modified in a special manner at the hinges.

As shown in Figure 4, each leg 24 may be provided with a pad 35 of rubber or other suitable filler to fill the space between the inside of leg 24 and the outside of flange 15. The filler element 35 may be fastened in place in any suitable manner such as a rivet 34. If rivets 28 are provided with protruding heads as shown, then rivets 34 are provided with similar heads so that rivets provide a four point support for the case in the upright position.

The present carrying case is relatively light in weight but quite strong and is economical to manufacture. The case can be modified for typewriters of various shapes by modifying the shape of the molded cover portions. The cover portions can be made quite light in weight as the primary supporting member is hand 10.

We claim:

1. A typewriter carrying case comprising a load supporting, metal band member encircling the midportion of the case and presenting two opposite edge portions each extending around the periphery of a respective side of the band member, opposite first and second cover portions, each having a laterally offset flange portion extending about the periphery thereof and in telescoping relationship with a respective one of the edge portions of the band member, handle means connected to the band member :at the top of the case, a pair of laterally outwardly offset, depending leg portions in the flange portion of each cover portion at the bottom of the carrying extending around the, periphery of a respective side hof 10 the band member, a reenforcing, laterally outwardlycofi; set rib portion extending about the band member adjacent each of the said edge portions, opposite first and secondcover portions, each having afiange portion extending about the periphery thereof, and receiv i'ng in,tele-,. 15
