Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. HART, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
ASH-DEPOSITOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 277,718, dated .May 15, 1883.
Application filed April 23,1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, JAMES H. HART, a resident of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Depositors, of which the following is a clear, full, and e5;- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a depositor con. structed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same, and, like Fig. 1, showing the depositor open; and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the same closed.
Like letters indicate like parts in all the tigures.
A represents a cylinder or pipe, provided at one end with an outwardly-projecting flange,
- B, flush with the upper end of the cylinder or pipe, and also provided at one side with an interiorly-projecting flange, F, also flush with the upper end, and extending nearly one-half the circumference of the pipe. A thirdflange, G, is provided upon the inner surface of the pipe, and below its upper end, and extending nearly one-half the distance around the said inner surface. A projection, E, is also formed on the inner surface, for a purpose hereinafter stated. The pipe or cylinder as thus described is preferably cast in one piece, but, if desired, may be constructed of sheet metal. Holes 0 are formed to receive a rod, I), or it may be, instead thereof, any suitable pivots for supporting a door, O. The door 0 is made thicker, or Weighted at one side of its diametrieal center, as at D, and is provided with projectinglug's cm, which are perforated for the reception therein of the rod b.
The purpose of the depositor constructed as described, and its operation, are as follows. By means of theflange B it is adapted to be supported in an aperture in the base-plate or bottom of a stove or furnace, or of the ash-pit thereof, or in a floor beneath a stove or furnace,
so that ashes may be conducted thercthrougn to a cellar or suitable receptacle beneath said stove or furnace. By means of the weighted cover the pipe will remain closed, notwithstanding any considerable collection of ashes upon the cover, and at the same time said cover may be tilted by hand directly, or through the medium of a stick or poker introduced into the ash-pit, so as to deliver the ashes through the pipe. The projection E is located so as to prevent the cover from assuming such a position that the weighted portion thereof shall pass beyond the center of support.
By the construction shown, the cover, in closing, swings in such a manner as to setback and closely fit the wall of the pipe above the flange Gr, and at all points, when closed, it presents a smooth unbroken surface, flush with the upper surface of the flange B.
Havingdescribed my invention and its operation, what I claim is 1. The pipe A, provided with the depressed interior flange, G, and the flush flange F, in combination with a cover provided with projecting lugs pivotally connected with the pipe, substantially as specified.
2. The pipe A,provided with the flush flanges B F and the depressed flange Gr, in combination with the cover 0,.weighted, as at D, and provided with the projecting hinge-lugs a, the rod 1), and stop E, substantially as shown and described. r
