SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,717, dated May 15, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL HANSZ, of Sullivan, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Motive-Power Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists of a triple crank driviugshaft with .foot-treadle, haudlever, and seat-lever attachments, whereby the power of the hands and feet and the weight of the body may be delivered on the driving-shaft for generating power for various purposes, as propelling wagons, hand-cars, tricycles, boats, elevators, and the like, and'for working derricks, pumps, drag-saws, and other machines, as hereinafter fully described.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, formingpart of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view of my improved motive-power apparatus.

On any suitable bed-frame, a, to be mounted on wheels, or in a boat, or used as a foundationframe for the support of the apparatus, I arrange a driving-shaft, b, in. suitable bearings, and having a foot-treadle crank, c, in the middle, with a hand-lever crank, d, each side of the foot-crank, and also having a cog-whee1,c, or it may be a belt-pulley, or one or more other cranks for transmitting the power, on which shaft I arrange a foot-treadle, f, on the crank c and hand-levers g on the cranks d, the levers being pivoted to the front ends of seat-levers 9', which extend backward from said levers g to the posts 7c, on the upper ends of which they are pivoted for the support of the seat Z and.

its back m, in suitable relation to the crankshaft for enabling the operator to work it by his hands and feet, so that his weight on the seat will lend material aid to the driving of the shaft, part of his weight being delivered on the crank through the hand-levers g, which have their fulcrums in the seat-levers.

By my improved contrivance of apparatus the labor is distributed upon the various parts of the body, so as to be more comfortable to the operator, and enabling him to produce a given amount of power with less fatigue than with other machines, and it may be operated by inexperienced persons with good results, producing more power than otherwise. As the seat rises while the weight of the operator is mainly supported on the foot-treadle, and the weight descends on the seat when the treadle rises, it will be seen that the seat-lever contrivance lends a very useful effect.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the triple-cranked shaft 0 d, foot-treadle, f, hand-levers g, and seat-levers j,vthe said seat-levers being pivoted to the posts It and to the hand-levers, and having the seat Z on mounted on them, substantially as described.
