4 Claims. (Cl. 20--40) This invention relates to window structures and is more particularly directed to a combination storm shutter and a fastener therefor.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a combination storm shutter and fastener which are readily mounted and removed from a window opening yet are simple and rugged in construction and inexpensive in cost.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a storm shutter and fastener ldescribed as above which are capable of being fitted to window openings of various sizes and are most elective in the protection of the window against high winds, rain, flying debris and the like.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a storm shutter assembly for the protection of windows, jalousies and the like which is light in weight, very easy to handle and requires no tools for erecting or dismantling same.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a storm shutter characterized hereinabove which may be erected without defacing the building or window opening and without the use of bolts, lag screws and the like.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged view of an anchor member shown partially broken away.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral refers generally to my storm shutter fastener and the numeral 11 to a shutter itself. The fastener 10 which is mounted within a window opening 12 extends between a sill 13 and a header 14 of the window opening 12 and consists of a pair of vertically disposed support members or rods 15 whose upper end portions are sharpened or pointed as at 16 and whose lower ends are threaded as at 17. The threaded portions 17 are each received by a threaded bore 18 of a pointed or anchor member 19 provided with a pointed or sharpened end 20. A bore 21 extends transversely through the anchor 19 for receiving a tool or a nail and the like to 2,777,174 Patented Jan.v 1.5, 1957 ICC assist in turning the anchor member 19 as is described in detail hereinafter.
A plurality of horizontally disposed support rods 22 extend across the window opening 12 mounted as by welding at 23 or the like to the Vertical support members 15. The end portions 24 of the rods 22 are bent at right angle as at 25 extending in a direction away from the opening 12 and are threaded as shown to'receive wing nuts 26. AA window shutter 27 made of plywood, sheet metal and the like is slightly larger than the window opening 12 and is provided with a plurality of bores 28 through which the threaded end portions 24 of the support rods 22 extend.
In mounting the shutter fastener 10 in the window opening 12, the fastener 10 is placed in the opening 12 a distance suiciently to permit the threaded members 24 to extend beyond the forward wall of the sill 13 and header 14. The anchor members 19 are then rotated by hand or by inserting a nail or the like in the bores 21 to assist rotating the anchor members 19 until the pointed ends 16 and 20 have embedded themselves securely into the sill 13 and the header 14. Then the shutter 27 is placed over the window opening 12 and the threaded members 24 are made to extend through the bores 28. Wing nuts 26 are then threaded on the members 24 and tightened against the outer surface of the shutter 27. The shutter 27 is now securely mounted on the window opening 12 and will protect the window (not shown) against wind, rain, flying debris and the like. When it is desired to remove the shutter from the window openings 12, the process is reversed, namely, the wing nuts 26 are Unthreaded from the members 24, the shutter 27 is removed and the anchor members 19 are also unthreaded until the pointed members 16 and 20 are free of the header 14 and the sill 13 respectively when the shutter fastener 10 is then removed and stored.
Having now disclosed my invention, and realizing that in View of my disclosure, many modifications in details of construction and design will readily occur to those skilled in the art, I do not choose to limit myself except as in the appended claims.
What I claim as new is:
l. A combination storm shutter for window openings comprising a support member adapted to be mounted in said window opening, said support member having pointed end portions, extensible means mounted on said support member for increasing the length of said support member, a panel adapted to enclose said window opening and fastening means mounted on said support member removably securing said panel on said window opening.

A combination storm shutter comprising a plurality of elongated support members, means mounted on said elongated support members for extending said members, a plurality of further elongated support members having a body portion mounted on said first named support members transversely thereto, said further elongated support members having end portions extending at substantially right angle to said body portion, a panel, said panel hav.- ing bores receiving said end portions of said further clon: gated support members, and retaining means mounted on said end portions for securing said panel to said fastener,

A combination storm shutter comprising a pair of elongated support members mounted substantially paralisi to each other, said elongated members having one end sharpened to a point and the other end provided with threads, a plurality of pointed anchoring members, said anchoring members each having a bore threadedly receive ing said other end of said elongated support members, a plurality of support members mounted transversely on said elongated support members, said transverse support members having threaded end portions extending at substantially right angle to a plane passing through said 4 members lmounted transversely on said elongated members, said transverse support members having end portions extending at a substantially right angle to a plane passing through said elongated members and threads mounted on said end portions adapted to receive wing nuts for securing a storm shutter.
