(C1. 132-79) This invention relates to cosmetic packages particularly packages of a compact and inexpensive type adapted for dispensing or marketing through automatic, coin-operated vending machines, and is a continuation-in-part of my `application Serial No. 662,327 tiled April 15, 1946, now

A principal object of `this invention is the provision4 of consolidated packages for containing cosmetics. `A further object is the provision of a combination package to hold one or more applications of rouge,` powder, lipstick or similar cosmetics in a relatively flat and compact form which is adapted for dispensing or marketing through automatic, coin-operated vending machines. A further object is the provision of a cosmetic packagewhich is` so economical to manufacture that it may be sold at such a very low cost that it may serve as an emergency unit or as an advertising item. 1A still further object is the provision of a cosmetic package containing desirable cosmetics so positioned as to be readily available to the user together with applicationmaterialsA with which the `cosmetics of the package may be applied, all these materials being contained in a single package of rugged and consolidated design. Still further objects `and the entire scopeof this invention will be apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter;I i i l i l These objects are accomplished accordingto `the present invention by the provision of my new cosmetic packages, the novel features and construction of which may be best understood by reference to the following detailed descriptionand the attached drawings in which:

Referring in detail to the drawings the cosmetic package v UnitedStates Patent ricc 1 in Figures 1 and 2 consists of a base 2 having open' cells 3 and l3 which contain cosmetics, a portion of which may be seen in the figures `designated as 10 and 10. The cosmetics may comprise face powder, lip rouge, rouge and the like. The face powder may be in the form of a cake which may be placed in the open cell and held in place by an adhesive, or may be in the form ofia loose powder. The latter may be placed in the cell, which is covered with paper, cellophane, Scotch tape, etc. (not shown). The cell cover is kept in place with an adhesive. Powdered rouge may be handled likewise. An oil-impervious sheet 4 such as cellulosic material, e. gi., of theregenerated cellulose type or plastic or the like `covers the top surfaces of the base 2 and the open cells 3 and 3', etc., more particularly when the package is closed. It may serve` also as a protector for the plurality of the soft absorbent fibrous sheets 5 which are located under the oil-impervious sheet in this particular form of the package and arrangement of the sheets. The soft absorbent fibrous sheets may consist of facial or toilet tissue sheets or the like. `They may be attached to the inside of the package by any suitable means. As shown in Figures l `and 2 they are attached to the cover 6 by staples 3 and 8' but they may also be attached in the same manner to the base.

The base 2 of my cosmetic package may assume various forms. In the forms shown in Figures 1 and 2 the base is composed of an` undersheet' which is made of cardboard, plastic or other stiff material andwhich may be covered, if desired, with a thin sheet of oil-imperviousl material not shown: Over the base sheet 6 is placed a relatively thick shcet7 such as a sheet of relatively heavy coardboard'ior `other suitable material such as plastic. The assembled base is thus'relatively rigid and stiif. The section 7 isiperforated at various points so asito form' in conjunction with the undersheet 6 open cells 3 and 3', in the base 2. The relatively thick sheet 7 is permanently joined, such as by adhesive, to the undersheet 6.

One ofthe special features of my invention is a special type ofrlipsticik comprising sticks or

11 and 11 and the base sheet 6. The lipsticks may take the form of a relatively small plastic (or wooden rod of other stiff material such as stiff cardboard) tippedfwith` lip rouge; several forms of which will be described below in connection with Figures 8, 9 and l0.

Another feature of my invention is the provision of the cover of for my package which folds over to form the top of the same and a lip 6" (which may be an extension of the base sheet) to hold the cover 6 in position when the package is closed. Figure 4 is a modification of my package as shown in Figure 1.v In this modification the thick section `7b of the base is shaped like an inverted T and is narrower than the base sheet 6b which extends beyond the section 7b on both sides and provides space for the lipsticks alongside of section 7b. Referring in detail to Figure 4, the cosmetic package 1b consists ofV a base 2b having open cells 3b and 3b containing cosmetics, a portion of which may be seen in the figures designated as 10b and 10b. The cosmetics may comprise face powder, lip rouge, rouge and the like, etc., as described in connection with Figure l. An oil-impervious sheet 4b such as plastic, regenerated cellulose Aor the like covers the top surface of the base 2b and the open cells 3b and 3b', more particularly when the package is closed. It also serves as a protector for the plurality of absorbent sheets 5b which are placed beneath the oil-impervious sheet in this form of package in which the sheets are attached to the cover. The absorbent sheets may also be attached to the base in which case the oil-impervious sheet is on the bottom of the absorbent sheets to protect them from the cosmetics. In general, the plurality of soft absorbent fbrous sheets may consist of facial or toilet tissue or the like. They may be attached to the inside of the package by suitable means; and as shown in Figure 4 gley are attached to the cover 6b' by staples 8b and The base of the cosmetic package shown in Figure 4 consists of a sheet of cardboard or other sti material (such as plastic) 6b which may be covered if desired with a thin sheet of oil-impervious material, not shown. Over this base sheet is placed a relatively thick sheet 7b which is made of a sheet of relatively heavy cardboard 9 or other suitablematerial such as plastic. This section 7b is perforated at various points so as to form in conjunction with the undersheet 6b open cells 3b and 3b containing cosmetics 10b and 10b'. The assembled base is thus relatively rigid and stiff particularly the area covered by the thick sheet 7b. The section 7b in this particular package is shaped like an inverted T, which is relatively narrow with respect to the base sheet 2b and provides space on both sides for lipsticks comprising rouge 12b and 12b and sticks 13b and 13b. These lipsticks will be described in more detail in connection with Figures 8, 9 and 10. The rod or stick elements of the lipstlcks may be inserted in pockets or receptacles 14b and 14b' .formed by slots 7b in inverted T-shaped base element 7b, the Ilip 6b" and the base sheet 6b. The lipstlcks may be made up of a plastic or wooden rod or similar rod of stiff material tipped with lip rouge. Several forms of lipsticks will be described in connection with Figures 8, 9 and 10. v

Another feature of my invention is the provision of the cover 6b which folds over to form the top of the package anda lip 6b to hold the cover 6b in position when the package is closed. The cover 6b and the lip 6b" are preferably integral with the base sheet 6 and are generally formed from a single sheet. However, although not preferred, I may employ a top cover sheet attached directly to the base as in the .form of my package shown in the application of which this is a continuation-in-part. The lip 6b is formed and held in place by suitable fastening means 9b, 9d, 9e and 9f.

Figure 6 is a cross section of Figure 4 taken on the line 6 6 and shows the position of the stick or rod elements of the lipsticks 13b' and 13b and open cell 3b with cosmetic 10b, and fastening means or staples 9b, 9d, 9e and 9j. Lip 6b and the slot 7b in the inverted T-shaped base element 7b wherein stick 13b is inserted (also corresponding lipstick 13b and slot on opposite side) are also shown in Figure 6.

Figure 5 is similar to Figure 2 in all respects except that the absorbent papers are folded back to provide greater surface. This is the preferred arrangement of the absorbent papers for all of my cosmetic packages. Referring to Figure 5 the cosmetic package 1a (like Figure 2) consists of a base 2a having open cells corresponding to the other figures with cosmetics not shown and open cells 11a to receive lipstick comprising rod or stick 13a tipped with lip rouge 12a. These lipsticks are of the types to be described in detail in connection with Figures 8, 9 and l0. The stick portion of the lipstick is inserted in pocket 14a formed as described in connection with the other figures. A plurality of soft absorbent fibrous sheets 5a with oil-impervious sheet 4a .for protection as described in connection with Figure 2 and the other figures are provided. These sheets are folded for convenience and to provide greater surface and in essence is the main difference between Figure 5 and Figure 2. However, this is the preferred form in this respect. The base is composed of base undersheet 6a made of cardboard with relative thick section 7a over and adhesively joined to it. This thick sheet is perforated to form open cells in conjunction with the base sheet for the reception of cosmetics as described in connection with Figure 1 and with the other figures. Cover sheet 6a is integral with base sheet 6a as in the other figures and is folded over the base to form the top of the package and is held in place by a lip 6a which is likewise integral with the base sheet 6a. The lip is :fastened to the base by suitable means 9a, in this case a metal staple. It is to be particularly pointed out that this modification, wherein the absorbenty papers are folded, may be used with all forms of my package including Figure 7, and in general is the preferred form.

Figure 7 is likewise a preferred modification of my cosmetic package and is similar to Figure 4 containing all of the elements of the latter except that it does not extend below the lip and therefore does not have the T cross :and slot elements.

Referring in detail to Figure 7 the cosmetic package 1c consists of a base sheet 6c made of cardboard, plastic, etc., upon which is mounted a relatively thick sheet or element 7c made of cardboard or other suitable material such as plastic, the ensemble being thus relatively rigid and stiff in the area of element 7c. The relatively thick sheet 7c is perforated so as to form in conjunction with the base sheet 6c open cells 3c and 3c' containing

10c and 10c which may comprise face powder, lip rouge, rouge and the like. Section 7c may have an oil-impervious sheet (not shown) interposed between it tand the base sheet 6c. An oil-impervious sheet 4c such as plastic, regenerated cellulose or the like covers the top surface of the base and the open cells containing the cosmetics particularly when the package is closed and acts as a protector for the plurality of soft absorbent fibrous sheets 5c which are placed beneath the oil-impervious sheet as depicted in Figure 7. The plurality of absorbent sheets which may -be used for applications of cosmetics and removal of excess, may consist of facial or toilet tissue or the like and is attached, in the present instance, to the cover of the package but may also be attached to the base. These sheets may be fastened in the package by any suitable means and in the present case are attached by staples 8c and 8c.

The element 7c (which does not extend below the lip 6c) is relatively narrow with respect to the base sheet 6c and provides space on either side for the lipsticks comprising sticks 13e and 13e tipped with lip rouge 12C and 12C. The rod or stick elements 13e and 13e' of the lipstick may be inserted in lpockets or receptacles 14e and 14e. These pockets are formed between the lip 6c and the base sheet 6c and are defined by space fastening means. The lipsticks may take the form of a plastic or wooden rod or rod of similar stiff material tipped with lip rouge, several forms of which will be described below in connection with` Figures 8, 9 and 10.

Another feature of my invention is the provision of the cover 6c for my package which folds back on the base to form` the top of the package and a lip 6c which engages and holds the cover in position when the package is closed. The cover 6c and the lip 6c" are preferably integral with the base sheet 6 and are preferably formed from a single sheet. However, l may employ a top cover sheet attached directly to the base as in the form of my package shown in the application of which this is a continuation-in-part.` The li-p 6c" is formed and held in position by suitable fastening means 9c', 9g, 9h, and 9c which also define the pockets 14e and 14e.

With particular reference to Figures 8, 9 and l0, I have found that the proper presentation of thelip ronge portion of my cosmetic packages presents an unusual problem. While it is possible to produce `a satisfactory package in which the face powder, face rouge, and lipstick portions are all charged in bulk form into the open cells of the package, l have found that a more satisfactory package is produced if the lip rouge or lipstick portion is not presented in the package in this lform. ln my application No. 662,327 (in Figure 5) of which this application is ia continuation-impart, l disclosed a novel method and means in the form of aspecial lipstick of presenting the lip rouge portion. This lipstick consists of a small stick or 4rod made of wood, plastic or similar stiff and rigid material which is preferably covered at one end with soft fibrous material such as cotton, absorbent paper, felt and the like. The soft fibrous material is, in turn, coated or tipped with a portion of lip rouge. As an alternative form of lipstick, the fibrous material may be eliminated and the end on which the lip rouge is applied in this case is rounded off smoothly so that there will be no possibility of discomfort or injury in applying the lip rouge to the lips. p

Referring to Figure 8, the rod 1S, which may 'be of wood, plastic or other stiff and rigid material, is covered or wrapped at one end with cotton, absorbent paper, wool, felt, or other soft fibrous material 16 and this in turn is co-ated or impregnated with lip rouge 17. Figure 9 is similar to Figure 8 except that the soft fibrous material 16a covering one end is tipped with lip rouge No leaving a portion of the fibrous material, e. g. cotton, uncoated. Numeral a is the stick or rod corresponding to 15 in Figure 8. Similarly 15b in Figure 10 corresponds to l5 in Figure 8 but in this case the end of the stick or rod which is tipped with lip rouge 17h is rounded off smoothly and need not be covered with fibrous material.

The lipsticks shown in all the modifications of my packages may be like any of those described in Figures 8, 9 and l0 although l prefer that shown in Figure 9.

The cosmetic package described above provides a new type of unit which may be manufactured at very little cost and which is specially suited for large volume merchandising such as through coin-operated vending machines. These packages are particularly useful since they incorporate into one structure all of the necessary ingredients and implements required for the ordinary cosmetic application operation. Furthermore, these packages may be designed to carry any desired combination of cosmetics, for instance face powder, rouge, cold cream and lip rouge. inasmuch as these packages may be so economically manufactured, the user can afford, after making an application of the ingredients, to discard the package. This fact adapts the packages for use as advertising items for which purpose the top sheet may be provided with suitable indicia.

Since various modifications of my package will -become apparent to those skilled in the art from the detailed description given herein, it is understood that this invention is to Ibe limited only in accordance with the following claims.

I claim:l

l. A cosmetic package comprising an integral base,`

cover and lip formed from a relatively thin sheet, sa'id thin sheet being folded over the base at one end of the base to form the cover and being folded over the base at the opposite end to form the lip, said lip engaging and retaining said cover, a relatively thick sheet overlying the inside of said base and covering said base at least in part, said relatively thick sheet being perforated to form an `open cell with said base to carry face powder, fastening means at spaced intervals to secure said lip to said base, a pocket intermediate said fastening means and between said lip and said base to receive and hold the lower end of a lipstick rod, and a plurality of soft, absorbent sheets fastened within said package.

2,. A cosmetic package comprising an integral base,

cover and lip formed from a relatively thin sheet, said thin sheet being folded over the base at one end of the base to form the cover and being folded over the base at the opposite end to form the lip, said lip engaging and retaining said cover, a relatively thick sheet overlying the inside of said base and covering said base at least in part, said relatively thick sheet being perforated to form an open cell with said base to carry face powder, fastening means at spaced intervals to secure said lip to said base, a pocket intermediate said fastening means and between said lip and said base to receive and hold the lower end of a lipstick rod, and a plurality of soft, absorbent sheets fastened within said package, the said cosmetic package being further characterized by an oil proof sheet interposed between the base of the package and the soft absorbent sheets.

3. A cosmetic package comprising an integral base, cover and lip formed from a relatively thin sheet, said thin sheet being folded over the base at one end of the base to form the cover and being folded over the base at the opposite end to form the lip, said lip engaging and retaining said cover, a relatively thick sheet overlying the inside of said base and covering said base at least in part, said relatively thick sheet being perforated to form an open cell with said base to carry face powder, fastening means at spaced intervals to secure said lip to said base, a pocket intermediate said fastening means and between said lip and said base to receive and hold the lower end of a lipstick rod, and a folded plurality of soft, absorbent sheets fastened on the inside of said cover of said package.

A cosmetic package comprising an integral base, cover and lip formed from a relatively thin sheet, said thin sheet being folded over the base at one end of the base to form the cover and being folded over the base at the opposite end to form the lip, said lip engaging and retaining said cover, a relatively thick sheet overlying the inside of said base and covering said base at least `in part, said relatively thick sheet being perforated to form an open cell with said base to carry face powder, fastening means at spaced intervals to secure said lip to said base, a pocket intermediate said fastening means and between said lip and said base to receive and hold the lower end of a lipstick rod, and a folded plurality of soft, absorbent sheets fastened on the inside of said cover of said package, the said cosmetic package being further characterized by an oil proof sheet interposed between the base of the package and the soft absorbent sheets.

5. A cosmetic package comprising an integral base, cover and lip formed from a relatively thin sheet, said thin sheet being folded over the base at one end of the base to form the cover and being folded over the base at the opposite end to form the lip, said lip engaging and retaining said cover, a relatively thick sheet overlying the inside of said base and covering said base at least in part, said relatively thick sheet being perforated to form an open cell with said base to carry face powder, fastening means consisting of metal staples at spaced intervals to secure said lip to said base, a pocket intermediate said metal staples and between said lip and said base to receive and hold the lower end of a lipstick rod, and a folded plurality of soft, absorbent sheets fastened on the inside of said cover of said package.

A cosmetic package comprising an integral base, cover and lip formed from a relatively thin sheet, said thin sheet being folded over the base at one end of the base to forrn the cover and being folded over thebase at the opposite end to form the lip, said lip engaging and retaining said cover, a relatively thick sheet overlying the inside `of said base and covering said base at least in part, said relatively thick sheet being perforated to form an open cell with said base to carry face powder, fastening means consisting of metal staples at spaced intervals to secure said lip` to said base, a pocket intermediate said metal staples and between said lip and said base to receive and hold the lower end of a lipstick rod, and a foldedplurality'of soft, absorbent sheets fastened on the inside of said cover of said package, the said package being further characterized by an oil proof sheet interposed between the base of the package and the plurality of soft absorbent sheets.
