Description
(No Model.) A MAEDER.
SPOON REST.
No. 277,304. Patented May 8,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SPOON-REST.
SPECIFICATION fOrming part of Letters Patent No. 277,304, dated May 8, 1883.
Application filed October 28, 1882. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARIA A. MAEDER, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Spoon-Rests and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact; description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of spoon-- rests which are, when in use, attached to the edge, rim, border, or brim of various kinds of dishes'by means of a spring clasp or clamp.
I am aware that spoon'rests of this kind have been used in connection with bowls or other deep dishes the sides of which are vertical, or nearly so; but there is a need for a spoon-rest which can be applied conveniently to platters and other shallow dishes, particularly such as are used for roast meats, stews of various kinds, 850., in which soups, gravies, &c., form an essential part of the food to be served, and it is the purpose of my invention to supply this need by a cheap, serviceable, and ornamental implement, wherebya spoon, ladle, or fork, or like implement may be effectually prevented from sliding into the dish.
To this end my invention consists ofa spring clasp or clamp constructed as hereinafter specified, and provided with a forked standard attached to said clamp or clasp in such manner that when the clamp or clasp is made to engage the edge or rim ofa plate, platter, or like dish or vessel, such edge being horizontal, or nearly so, the standard is securely held in an erect position, by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a platter with my improved spoon-rest therbunto ap plied. Fig. 2 is aside view of the spoon-rest, and Fig. 3 an end view of the same.
0 c 0 represent the clamp, which may be made of any suitable spring metal adapted to the manufacture of table-ware. As the edges of plates or platters are ordinarily slightly thicker than the body of the rim, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2, (this increased thickness being sometimes designed for ornamental purposes, and sometimes being the result of an accumulation. of glaze along the border as will more fully appear after the dipping and baking of the ware,) I make. the part 0 of the clamp or clasp between the jaws 0 c of said clasps recurved outwardly in circular or any other preferred ornamental form, to clear the thicker edge of the plate and permit the jaws c c to rest fair upon the body of the rim, as shown in Fig. 2. clasp, while embracing the edge of the dish with sufficient firmness to hold securely, yet may be readily slipped around on the edge of the dish to any desired position without removing its grasp therefrom.
To one of the jaws c, I attach the forked standard .9 s s by soldering, or riveting, or in any other suitable manner, and at or nearly at a right angle with said jaw, by which construction, when the clamp or clasp is engaged with the rim of the platter, the standard is made to assume a vertical or nearly vertical position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When so attached the handle of the spoon may be The placed between the bifurcations s s of the standard, thus affording a secure and convenient rest for such handle, and holding it well up from the dish, where its handle may be readily grasped by the hand when desired.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is as follows:
1. A spoon-rest composed of a clamp or clasp for engaging the border or rim of a plate, platter, or similar dish or vessel, and a forked standard attached to one of the jaws of said clamp in a position at or'nearly at a right angle with said jaw, whereby when the clamp is engaged with said border or rim the standard may be made to assume a vertical position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Aspoon-rest composed of a spring-clamp, O c c, for engaging the border or rim of a plate, platter, or like dish, and a forked standard,, 8 s .9, attached to one of the jaws c of said clamp, said clamp having the part 0 between the jaws c c recurved outwardly to clear the thicker edges of said platter, plate, or dish,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
MARIA A. MAEDER.
